Chapter 22: The First Seal
Chapter 22: The First Seal
“Move, Evelyn!” Tristan’s shout was raw, his amulet flaring blue as the wraith’s blade smashed through the outpost door, splintered wood flying, the air thick with ash and decay. Evelyn’s rune burned, a searing pulse in her palm, her blessed dagger flashing as she slashed at the wraith, its red eyes blazing with Azrael’s sigil. The war-torn plain roared outside, screams and clashing steel mingling with the crash of waves at Bloodstone Cliff, the stench of blood and smoke choking her.
“Get us to her!” Evelyn yelled, dodging a wraith’s claw, her boots slipping on the outpost’s muddy floor. She pointed to the priestess, Princess Aeloria, her ancestor, chanting at the cliff’s edge, her white gown stained with blood, her dagger raised. Tristan nodded, blood trickling from his nose, and pressed the amulet, its runes sparking, the air humming as they shifted, landing closer to Aeloria, the ground trembling under the dark spirit’s wrath.
The spirit loomed, a colossal shadow of claws and eyes, tearing through soldiers, its howl shaking the cliff. Aeloria’s voice rose, sharp and desperate, her blood dripping onto carved runes, sizzling like fire on stone. “By my blood, I bind you!” she chanted, her auburn hair whipping in the wind, the air crackling with power. Beside her, an Eastmarch prince, her lover, stood, his sword drawn, his face torn with doubt.
Evelyn’s rune flared, hot as a brand, and she crouched behind a boulder, her dagger clutched, the scent of salt and blood sharp. “She’s doing the blood rite,” she whispered, her voice tight, the Chronicle of the Cliff heavy in her satchel. “But he’s not helping, why?”
Tristan, slumped beside her, his cloak soaked with sweat, coughed blood, his amulet dim. “He’s betraying her,” he rasped, his voice weak, bruises pulsing on his arm. “Look, his eyes.” The prince hesitated, glancing at a cloaked figure in the distance, Azrael’s red claw glinting, then turned away, leaving Aeloria alone. The spirit shrank, bound but not destroyed, the cliff’s runes glowing faintly gold.
Evelyn’s heart sank, the rune’s heat surging, a voice, Aeloria’s, speaking through it, soft but urgent: “Blood heir, you carry my echo.” The air shivered, the spirit’s howl fading, and Aeloria’s spirit turned, her eyes meeting Evelyn’s across time. “The spirit was a guardian, corrupted by betrayal. Only two hearts, united in blood, can destroy it. My seal failed, complete it.”
“Two hearts?” Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling, gripping the boulder, its stone cold under her fingers. The weight of Aeloria’s task pressed down, her rune pulsing with the spirit’s history, the air thick with salt and regret. “Rowan… he was supposed to be my heart.”
Tristan’s hand brushed hers, cold and trembling, his breath shallow. “Aeloria’s seal was incomplete,” he said, his voice low, blood staining his lips. “That’s why your blood woke it, Azrael exploited the flaw.” He coughed again, his amulet flickering, the cliff’s runes dimming as Aeloria collapsed, her lover fleeing into the chaos.
A glint caught Evelyn’s eye, a shard of Aeloria’s ritual dagger, glowing gold, half-buried in the mud. She lunged, her fingers closing around it, its edges sharp, warm with residual magic. “This could help,” she said, pocketing it, the shard’s weight light but potent, the air humming with its power. “A key to resealing the spirit.”
A wraith’s snarl shattered the moment, and her rune flared, a white-hot pain. Black-armored wraiths surged from the fog, their blades glowing green, their red eyes locked on her. “They’re here!” she shouted, dragging Tristan behind a shattered cart, its wood splintered, the stench of decay overwhelming. The wraiths’ claws scraped the ground, their howls mixing with the battle’s screams, the cliff trembling.
“We can’t stay!” Tristan gasped, raising the amulet, its runes sparking, a new portal flickering open, its red glow unstable, the air roaring like a storm. His chant faltered, blood streaming from his nose, and he collapsed, the amulet slipping from his hand, its light dimming, the portal wavering.
“Tristan!” Evelyn dropped beside him, her dagger clattering, her hands shaking as she lifted his head, his skin clammy, his breath faint. “Wake up!” The wraiths closed in, their blades slashing the air, the ground shaking, the battle’s chaos loud in her ears. Her rune burned, Aeloria’s voice echoing: Complete it.
Aeloria’s spirit appeared, shimmering, her hand seizing Evelyn’s, cold as ice. “Find the traitor’s heart,” she whispered, her fingers tracing a second glyph onto Evelyn’s rune, its lines glowing gold, a new burn searing her palm. The words chilled her, the shard’s warmth in her pocket a faint hope, the wraiths’ howls deafening.
The portal surged, its pull yanking them, Aeloria’s spirit fading, the cliff dissolving into shadow and light. Evelyn clutched Tristan’s limp form, the amulet’s glow faint, the air roaring, her scream lost as they tumbled into the unknown.
