Chapter 10
"Silent Killer?" I muttered under my breath, the words echoing in the tense air. My heart hammered against my ribs, a drumbeat of fear that quickened my pulse and left me breathless.
"Relax, Jem," Jay's voice cut through the anxiety, his eyes steady on mine, casting a knowing glance my way. Despite his attempt to calm me, my mind was elsewhere, lost in a maze of uncertainties.
"Any word on why they're after Silent Killer?" Jay inquired, his arms crossed as we lingered outside the interrogation room. Vanessa, nonchalant against the wall, seemed disengaged, her eyes shut in contemplation.
"No specifics," Dimitri sighed heavily, the weight of the unknown hanging over us like a shroud of danger.
"But who is this Silent Killer, and what could Dennis possibly want from him?" Vanessa's casual tone contrasted with the gravity of the situation, her actions seemingly indifferent.
"Silent Killer is a she," Jay corrected, sharing a knowing look with me. I silently shook my head, a silent request urging him to stay quiet, the less said, the better.
"You mean to tell me you've never heard of Silent Killer?" Dimitri's disbelief directed at Vanessa made her shake her head in response.
"She's new to the game, you can't fault her for that," Jay defended Vanessa, while I distanced myself from the conversation, leaning against the wall, observing in silence.
"Silent Killer is the most dangerous assassin, shrouded in mystery. When she's called, she delivers, her true identity a well-guarded secret, her missions are sent through heavily encrypted means. No one has ever seen or heard her voice,” Dimitri elaborated, earning a nod of acknowledgment from Vanessa.
"Why would Dennis be after her, though?" Vanessa probed, delving deeper into the enigma unfolding before us. I was becoming agitated, wishing she would drop it.
"Word is she's here in Rome on a mission to take Dennis himself out, but the details are murky," Dimitri's revelation left us on edge, the mystery of Silent Killer casting a shadow over our every move.
"So why does Dennis think you have her then?” Vanessa probed, her eyes locked on Jay, seeking answers in the shadows of uncertainty.
"Because Rome is my terrain, Vanessa!" Jay declared, his voice a low growl, the weight of the city's secrets heavy on his shoulders.
“Why don’t we question the only guy left alive?” Vanessa's suggestion pierced the air, drawing all eyes to the silent figure on the other side. His presence, a ghostly reminder of the danger that lurked in the shadows.
“Why are you so quiet, Jemima?” Vanessa's relentless questioning met my silence, a storm brewing beneath my calm exterior.
“What do you want me to say?” I snapped, the tension crackling between us like lightning in a dark sky.
“I don’t know! Why are you even in Rome?” Vanessa's words prodded, igniting a fire of frustration within me.
“I'm here on a mission,” I stated firmly, my resolve unwavering despite the chaos around us.
“Ladies, take it easy,” Dimitri's voice cut through the escalating conflict, a beacon of calm in the storm.
“I will interrogate the prisoner, you’ve done enough,” Jay's authoritative tone shifted the focus, a new path unfolding before us.
“No, our lives were at risk because of this stranger. What if Dennis sends more guys? We need to know what is going on, and the only person that can provide us with answers is on the other side of this wall,” Vanessa's urgency rang out, a call to action in the face of uncertainty.
“For the love of God, would you just shut up and stop being so chatty!” I exploded, the pressure of the situation finally breaking through, emotions raw and unfiltered in the heat of the moment.
"Who the hell do you think you are? You can’t talk to me like that!” She probed, her eyes ablaze with fury, a storm brewing in her gaze as she took a menacing step towards me. I mirrored her movements, the tension thick in the air, staring back with unwavering intensity.
“And what the hell are you going to do about it?” I dared, the challenge hanging between us like a sword unsheathed, forcing Dimitri to step in the way, a silent barrier in the face of impending conflict.
“You have changed so much?” She pointed out, her words cutting through the charged atmosphere, eliciting a scoff from me, a bitter laugh tinged with resentment.
“It’s been twelve years! Was I supposed to still be the same and cry about my father hating me all the time,” I lashed out, the words sharp with underlying pain and defiance, throwing shades at her for her own vulnerabilities, a mirror reflecting the darkness within us both.
Humans hurt humans.
“How dare you?” She yelled, her voice a thunderclap in the enclosed space, the echoes of her anger reverberating off the walls, a symphony of discord.
I wasn’t going to throw the first punch because if there’s one thing I’ve learned in physical combat it’s that, never draw the first blood and that was Vanessa’s mistake. She shoved Dimitri aside, a silent signal of her intent, and with a swift motion, landed a punch on my chin. The metallic taste of blood filled my mouth, a bitter reminder of the violence that lingered beneath the surface, yet I spat it out defiantly, a smirk playing on my lips, a mask of defiance.
“Ever since you arrived, you’ve been acting like you’re too good for everyone. News flash, you’re not!” She exclaimed, her words a sharp retort, a challenge thrown into the ring of our conflict, igniting the flames of anger within me.
“It’s not an act sweetheart,” I retorted, the pain in my jaw a tangible reminder of the physical toll of our confrontation, a battle of wills and emotions colliding in a clash of egos.
“Please Jem,” Dimitri's plea fell on deaf ears, the urgency of his words lost in the heat of the moment, the adrenaline coursing through my veins drowning out all else.
“She drew the first blood,” I stated simply, the truth of our altercation laid bare, as I lunged forward, the primal instinct of survival guiding my movements, aiming for her neck with a single-minded focus. One punch was all it took to bring her down, her form crumpling in a heap, the aftermath of our clash leaving a trail of brokenness in its wake. Clawing and gasping for air, she held on to her throat for dear life.
Another thing I learnt in physical combat, when you do throw a punch, target the weak spot.
“Jem, just tell them,” Jay said, a soft sigh eliciting from him. In the heat of the moment, as tension crackled in the air like electricity, Jay's words hung heavy, a soft sigh escaping him, a mere prelude to the storm that was about to unfurl. I fixed him a pointed gaze like he didn’t know the gravity of what he was saying.
"No Jay! It could ruin everything!" I declared, my gaze fixed on him like a hawk, a silent warning in my eyes.
Dimitri, ever the mediator, lent a helping hand to his fiancée, who cast a disdainful glance in my direction, a silent challenge in her eyes.
"What's going on?" Dimitri's demand cut through the charged atmosphere, Jay's groan of frustration echoing the weight of the unspoken truth.
"If you don't spill it, I will!" Jay's assertion held a firm resolve, his eyes locked on mine, a battle of wills in the making.
"I can't trust them!" I countered, the words heavy with the burden of secrets long kept.
"Yes, you can!" Jay's assurance pierced through my defenses, a beacon of hope in the darkness of uncertainty.
"What is it?" Dimitri's voice rose, a crescendo of curiosity as Vanessa's piercing gaze bore into me, a silent threat lingering in the air.
And then, with a whisper that cut through the tension like a knife, I uttered the words that would change everything, "I am Silent Killer!"
