Chapter 90: The Eclipse King
Chapter 90: The Eclipse King
“Wake up.”
Alex’s eyes flew open.
But he wasn’t in the Den. He was kneeling in a wasteland of ash, the sky a bruised red, his claws dripping with blood.
Maya’s voice cut through the haze. “Alex! Hey, wake up!”
He jerked upright, heart hammering, sweat cold against his skin.
For a moment, he didn’t recognize her or the room. The firepit burned low; the Den was silent except for the crackle of flame.
Lucas stood by the doorway, arms folded. “That’s the third time this week.”
Alex rubbed his temples. “It’s nothing.”
Maya frowned. “Nothing doesn’t make you bleed in your sleep.”
He glanced down at the faint red marks across his palms, shaped like claw prints.
And worse
they weren’t his.
Outside, Crescent Fang was stirring again preparing for a new campaign. Ravenspire’s survivors had vanished into the woods, and whispers of strange lights haunted the outer territories.
Cain leaned against the stone archway, watching the sky. “You ever get the feeling we’re being watched?”
Lucas smirked. “We’re wolves. We are the ones who watch.”
Cain didn’t laugh. “Not this time.”
Maya joined them, her expression tight. “He’s getting worse.”
Lucas raised an eyebrow. “Alex?”
She nodded. “He doesn’t sleep. Barely eats. And when he does sleep, he wakes up looking like he fought a ghost.”
Cain’s gaze flicked toward the Alpha’s quarters. “Maybe he did.”
That night, the Den grew quiet.
Alex sat alone by the fire, staring into the flames. Every crackle seemed to whisper. Every ember seemed to breathe.
He closed his eyes.
And then
“Alex…”
He froze.
The voice was soft, faint, echoing inside his head a sound he hadn’t heard in months.
“Kara?”
Silence.
He stood sharply. “No. You’re gone. I buried you.”
“Did you?”
He spun but the Den was empty. Only the shadows moved, flickering along the walls.
Then he saw it, the faint shape of a woman in the firelight, half-formed, her outline trembling like heatwave distortion.
“Kara,” he whispered again.
Her eyes met his golden, shimmering, alive.
And then she vanished.
By morning, Alex had summoned the pack council.
“I saw her,” he said flatly.
Lucas frowned. “Who?”
“Kara.”
Cain blinked. “Alex ”
“She’s alive.”
Maya crossed her arms. “Alex, I was there when ”
“I saw her,” he interrupted, voice low and dangerous. “And she spoke to me.”
The Den fell silent.
From the corner, an older wolf Elder Rune, Crescent Fang’s seer stepped forward. His blind eyes glimmered faintly.
“The Veil is thinning,” Rune murmured. “What was lost may yet speak.”
Alex turned to him. “You believe me.”
“I believe the Eclipse has awakened,” Rune said. “And that it calls to you both.”
Lucas scowled. “You mean Kara’s trapped in that cursed dimension again?”
Rune shook his head. “No. She’s bound to it. Half alive, half shadow. And the thread between her and the Alpha ” He nodded at Alex. “ is what keeps both realms from collapsing.”
Maya exhaled. “So if one of them falls ”
“The other follows,” Rune finished.
Alex’s jaw tightened. “Then I’m going to find her.”
Meanwhile
In the other realm.
Kara stood before a massive obsidian throne carved into the cliffside, the air humming with static energy. The red sun hung lower now, bleeding into the clouds.
Nerissa knelt beside her, eyes downcast. “He’s awake.”
Kara’s voice was steady. “The Eclipse King.”
Nerissa nodded. “He felt your pulse when you sealed the Mirror Wraith. You’ve drawn his attention.”
“And?”
“And that’s not always survivable.”
Kara stepped forward, her crimson aura flaring. “Let him come.”
Nerissa’s gaze flicked upward. “You don’t understand what he is.”
“Then tell me.”
Nerissa rose, her cloak whispering against the stone. “The Eclipse King is not a god. Not a wolf. He’s the memory of the first sin the hunger that began the war of worlds. He devours names, faces, and hearts.”
“And you serve him?” Kara demanded.
“I serve balance,” Nerissa said quietly. “But even balance has masters.”
Kara clenched her fists. “Then tell him this I’m not his to claim.”
The air trembled.
And then
a voice like thunder rolled across the sky.
“You already were.”
The throne room darkened.
From the center of the blackened stone, smoke began to pour upward, swirling into form, tall and crowned with horns of burning red light.
Kara’s breath caught.
He was enormous, his shape fluid, shifting between wolf and man, eyes molten gold like Alex’s but deeper, endless.
The Eclipse King smiled.
“You wear my mark well,” he said, voice smooth as silk, deadly as flame.
Kara drew her blade. “You don’t own me.”
He tilted his head. “Don’t I? Every time your heart beats, a star dies in my name.”
Her grip tightened. “You want me? Come take me.”
The King laughed softly, stepping closer, his shadow swallowing the ground between them.
“Oh, I don’t need to. You’ll come willingly.”
“Why would I?”
“Because,” he whispered, “the boy you love will follow your voice… straight into my world.”
Kara’s eyes widened. “Alex ”
But it was too late.
The mirrors above them flared, each showing flashes of Crescent Fang Alex standing before a ring of glowing runes, preparing to cross the Veil.
The King smiled. “He’s already coming.”
Back in the mortal world, the Den shook with power.
Rune’s chants filled the air as glowing lines of energy circled Alex. The runes pulsed red the same color as Kara’s realm.
“Once you begin, there’s no return,” Rune warned. “You’ll either reach her… or become like her.”
Alex didn’t hesitate. “I made her a promise.”
Maya grabbed his arm. “If you die, this pack dies with you!”
Alex met her eyes. “Then protect them until I get back.”
He stepped into the circle. The air screamed.
Light burst outward, and the world ripped apart.
Kara fell to her knees as the air above the throne cracked open reality bending as a human form began to fall through.
“Alex!”
He hit the ground hard, rolling to his feet, claws half-drawn, eyes blazing with the same gold light as hers.
“Kara…”
She stared at him, disbelief and relief colliding all at once. “You how did you ”
“I told you,” he said softly. “I’d find you.”
For a moment, the world seemed to still, two heartbeats syncing, light and shadow entwined.
Then the King’s laughter broke the silence.
“Ah,” he murmured. “Two worlds for the price of one.”
Alex turned, fangs bared. “You’re the Eclipse King.”
The entity smiled. “And you… are my echo.”
The red sun flared.
The ground shattered.
And the King extended his hand a surge of darkness exploding outward, swallowing everything in its path.
Alex shoved Kara behind him, claws glowing gold. “Stay back!”
The King’s laughter deepened. “Protect her, if you can. But remember the Eclipse always collects what it’s owed.”
The light collided with shadow a blinding flash that tore through the realm.
And when the dust settled…
Kara was alone.
Alex was gone.
