Big Brother Boots and Sister Shoes

Big Brother Boots and Sister Shoes
The door to the hospital room creaked open slowly, followed by the unmistakable sound of toddler chatter and Sadie’s soft laugh trying to wrangle it.

“Knock knock,” Maisie’s voice called gently.

Jordyn looked up from her bed, a tired but glowing smile spreading across her face. “Come in.”

Maisie stepped inside first, holding the door open as Sadie walked in, one hand on each of her little brothers. Colt toddled in confidently, while Beau lagged behind, clinging to a well-loved stuffed horse and peering around the room with wide, curious eyes.

“Be gentle,” Sadie warned softly. “And remember what we talked about, okay? No yelling, no jumping, and no touching unless Mama says it’s okay.”

Colt nodded seriously, though the moment he spotted Dustin sitting in the corner with the baby in his arms, he whispered, “Baby.”

“Yeah, buddy,” Dustin said with a grin. “Your baby sister.”

Maisie leaned over the side of the bed, kissing Jordyn’s forehead. “You look beautiful, sweetheart.”

Jordyn huffed a soft laugh. “You’re a liar, but I love you for it.”

Sadie’s gaze found the tiny bundle wrapped in soft pink, her eyes widening in awe as she stepped closer. “She’s so little…”

“She sure is,” Dustin said. “Wanna meet her?”

Sadie nodded, and Dustin stood carefully, walking over and easing the baby into her arms with gentle guidance. Sadie sat on the edge of the bed beside Jordyn, her arms cradling her baby sister like she’d done it a hundred times before.

“Her name’s Katherine Rae,” Jordyn said softly. “We’ll call her Kate, sometimes.”

Sadie looked up, eyes shimmering. “After our mom?”

Jordyn nodded. “Yeah, and Dustin’s mom too…”

Colt toddled up to the bed and reached out toward the baby’s tiny foot. “Toes,” he declared proudly.

“Be soft,” Dustin warned gently.

Colt’s chubby fingers brushed the blanket, his face full of wonder. Beau crept up slowly behind his brother, his free hand in his mouth, eyes locked on the baby.

“Come here, sweet boy,” Jordyn coaxed.

Beau reached up, and Dustin scooped him into his arms, holding him so he could get a closer look.

“This is your sister, Beau,” Dustin said quietly. “She’s gonna be part of your wild little crew.”

Beau leaned forward, pressing a shy kiss to the top of the baby’s head.

“She’s perfect,” Sadie whispered. “Tiny and perfect.”

Maisie dabbed at her eyes behind them, shaking her head. “I told you this baby would bring light. Just like the rest of these little miracles.”

Jordyn looked around the room - at Sadie, growing into the role of big sister with grace and strength; at Colt and Beau, wide-eyed and full of wonder; at Dustin, steady and soft, holding Beau like he was made of glass.

This… this was everything.

“Okay,” Sadie said suddenly, “but we need to figure out who she’s gonna sleep next to when we all watch movies. That’s important.”

Dustin laughed. “Let’s get her home first, kiddo.”

“And…” Sadie added seriously, “she can’t pick a favorite brother. That’s the rule.”

“Absolutely,” Jordyn said, smiling. “Equal snuggles for all.”

The twins nodded solemnly, though Colt seemed very confident he’d be the favorite.

And as the room filled with laughter and chatter, baby Katherine Rae slept peacefully, surrounded by the only thing that mattered: family.

The hospital stay passed in a soft blur of newborn cries, swaddled snuggles, and interrupted sleep. But after just two days, the doctors gave Jordyn and baby Katherine Rae a clean bill of health. The nurses offered warm congratulations as Dustin loaded the car seat with practiced hands and helped Jordyn into the back seat right next to their baby girl.

The ride home was quiet, peaceful, Dustin stealing glances at his girls in the mirror. Jordyn’s hand rested protectively over the car seat handle, her gaze never leaving their daughter’s sleeping face.

“Feels different this time,” she murmured, voice full of warmth.

“Yeah?” Dustin asked.

“Yeah,” she said, smiling softly. “With the twins, it was chaos. Beautiful chaos, but… chaos. This feels like we’re soaking it in.”

Dustin reached back with one hand and laced their fingers together. “We’ve earned the quiet.”

Back at the ranch, Maisie had the house spotless, dinner simmering on the stove, and the twins freshly bathed and dressed in matching outfits that said “Big Brother” across the front. Sadie came running out the front door first when she heard the truck, practically vibrating with excitement.

Dustin helped Jordyn out carefully while Sadie peeked into the back seat.

“She’s so tiny,” Sadie whispered, eyes wide with awe.

“She’s perfect,” Jordyn said softly.

Maisie met them on the porch, warm smile and open arms waiting. “Welcome home, baby girl,” she cooed as Dustin carried her inside.

The house felt whole again.

A few hours later, headlights cut through the late afternoon haze as Travis’ truck crunched up the drive. Asher was the first one out, holding something carefully in his hands, two pink balloons tied to a homemade card that read “Welcome, Baby Girl Walker.”

Kinley laughed softly as she stepped out behind him, one hand resting on her still-growing bump. Travis came around the other side, carrying a casserole dish and grinning like a man who had somehow stumbled into being part of something much bigger than himself.

Inside, the twins circled the baby’s bassinet, climbing on tiptoes to peek in. Colt looked confused.

“Why so small?” he asked, brow furrowed.

Jordyn laughed gently. “You were that small once.”

“No,” Beau said with toddler certainty.

“Yup,” Dustin chuckled. “And louder, if you can believe it.”

Asher stepped forward next, careful and quiet. He looked older these days, more mature, he’d be turning 15 in a few days.

“What’s her name again?” he asked.

“Katherine Rae,” Jordyn said. “But we’ll probably call her Katie most days.”

“She’s gonna be spoiled,” Asher declared, with a smirk that looked way too much like his father’s.

“That’s the plan,” Dustin said proudly, arm wrapped around Jordyn’s waist.

The rest of the evening was spent in soft conversation and shared laughter. Kinley and Jordyn chatted in the kitchen while Travis and Dustin took the twins outside to burn off some energy. Asher stayed close to the baby’s side, protective and curious.

When the sun finally dipped low and the guests said their goodbyes, Dustin leaned in the doorway of their room for a long moment, just watching.

Jordyn rocked slowly, Katie curled up against her chest, the soft creak of the rocking chair filling the quiet.

“She’s gonna have the world, you know,” Dustin whispered.

Jordyn looked up. “She already does.”
