Waves of Anticipation

Waves of Anticipation
The news of my pregnancy settled over me like a warm current—comforting yet charged with the weight of its implications. Kaelan hadn’t left my side since the healer confirmed it. His protective instincts, already fierce, seemed to magnify with every passing hour. It was as though the very idea of our child had intensified the bond between us, deepening our connection in ways I couldn’t have imagined.
But amidst the joy, I couldn’t shake the undercurrent of worry. The kingdom was still in a fragile state, and the council’s divisions were far from resolved. Adding the complexities of an heir to the equation would undoubtedly send ripples through the court, and I wasn’t naïve enough to think that all of them would be supportive.

The day after the healer’s visit, Kaelan and I sat together in his chambers, the soft glow of bioluminescent coral illuminating the space. He had been quiet, his trident resting against the wall as he stared out the window at the vast expanse of the sea.
“What are you thinking?” I asked gently, placing a hand on his arm.
He turned to me, his expression thoughtful. “I’m thinking about what this means—for us, for the kingdom.” He paused, his brow furrowing. “River, this child changes everything. Not just for us, but for the council, the people… even the alliances we’re trying to rebuild.”
I nodded, understanding his concerns. “You’re worried about how they’ll react.”
“I am,” he admitted. “Some will see this as a symbol of hope—a way to unite the kingdom. But others… others may see it as an opportunity. A way to manipulate us or leverage their positions.”
The thought sent a shiver through me, but I pushed it aside. “Then we’ll face them together,” I said firmly. “This child is ours, Kaelan. And no one—not the council, not the nobles, not anyone—will take that from us.”

We decided to keep the news to ourselves for the time being, allowing us the space to process it before sharing it with the court. But even as we tried to maintain a sense of normalcy, I could feel the changes within me. The flutters in my stomach grew more frequent, accompanied by a strange sense of warmth that seemed to radiate from my very core. It was as though the ocean itself was acknowledging this new life, its currents carrying a subtle energy that I had never felt before.
The bond between Kaelan and me also seemed to shift, growing stronger with each passing day. It wasn’t just the closeness we had always shared—it was something deeper, more primal. I could feel his emotions more clearly than ever, his love and protectiveness wrapping around me like a shield.

As the days passed, I began to notice subtle changes in how others interacted with me. The palace staff, always polite, seemed to hover a little more than usual, their concern evident in the way they offered assistance or watched me out of the corners of their eyes. Even Eira, who rarely allowed emotions to show, had become noticeably more attentive, her sharp gaze softening whenever we spoke.
It was clear that word of the pregnancy hadn’t spread, but the bond Kaelan and I shared was powerful enough that those closest to us likely sensed something was different. The challenge would be keeping it under wraps until we were ready to announce it—especially with the council already divided and tensions running high.

One afternoon, Kaelan and I visited the gardens, seeking a brief reprieve from the weight of our responsibilities. The coral blooms swayed gently in the current, their vibrant colors a reminder of the beauty that still thrived amidst the kingdom’s struggles. As we wandered through the paths, Kaelan reached for my hand, his grip firm yet tender.
“Do you ever think about what kind of world we’ll bring this child into?” he asked, his voice quiet.
“All the time,” I admitted. “It scares me, Kaelan. The kingdom is still so fractured, and there are days when I wonder if we’ll ever truly find peace.”
He stopped walking, turning to face me. “We will,” he said, his voice filled with conviction. “It won’t be easy, and it won’t happen overnight. But we’ll rebuild this kingdom, River. Not just for us, but for them.”
I smiled, my hand resting against my stomach as I felt another flutter. “They’re lucky to have you as their father,” I said softly.
Kaelan’s expression softened, and he pulled me into an embrace. “And they’re lucky to have you as their mother,” he replied. “I can already feel how strong you are, how fiercely you’ll love and protect them. Together, we’ll give them the world.”

Later that evening, as I prepared for bed, I found myself reflecting on everything that had brought us to this point. The trials, the battles, the betrayals—all of it had tested us in ways I never could have imagined. But through it all, Kaelan and I had emerged stronger, our bond unshakable.
As I lay beside him, his arm draped protectively over me, I felt a sense of peace that had eluded me for so long. The challenges we faced were daunting, but for the first time in what felt like forever, I believed we could overcome them. Not just for ourselves, but for the child who was already becoming the center of our world.
And as I drifted off to sleep, the gentle rhythm of Kaelan’s breathing beside me, I couldn’t help but feel a flicker of hope. The path ahead was uncertain, but together, we would face whatever the tides brought our way.
