Chapter 29
“Pete said something to me about Paul’s girlfriend blowing your whole operation, how true is that?” Kate asked.
“I know about it. Paul told me,” Diane said. "He doesn't think she would go ahead with it though."
They were at a park and there were quite a number of people there. Children running around as their parents watched or talked with other parents, lovers having romantic moments with each other and there were people who were there alone to enjoy the view.
“I advised Pete to tell his dad about it before anyone else,” Kate said smiling. “This doesn’t affect our plans, right?”
“It doesn’t,” Diane replied as she watched a kid rolling on the grass with no idea who the parent might be. “I set the whole thing in motion already. It will happen anytime now, and I won’t be going back there anyway.”
“What will you say to Paul when he calls?” Kate asked.
“That I’m sick,” Diane said.
“I feel sorry for Paul though,” Diane said.
Kate gave Diane a sharp look and smiled. “Don’t tell me you developed feelings for him.”
“Maybe I did,” Diane said.
Kate laughed. “Maybe I’ll break your head and leave your body for the crows.”
“I smell jealousy,” Diane said, smiling. She looked at Kate for a few seconds and then kissed her briefly.
“I simply think, you know, he’s a good guy,” Diane said.
“A good guy that was going to kick his dad out of his company,” Kate said.
“You don’t think you would have done something like that if you were in his shoes?” Diane asked.
“Maybe,” Kate said. “But I’m not in his shoes.”
“Right!”
“What are you going to do with all that money?” Kate asked.
“I don’t know yet,” Diane replied. “I’m working on it. What will you do with yours?”
“Vacation baby!” Kate shouted.
“Keep your voice down idiot,” Diane said.
“The Bahamas, Aruba, who knows, maybe I’ll cast lots on which one,” Kate continued. “We’ll also be going together. I don’t know why you always have to be serious with life,” she said as she tapped Diane multiple times in the back.
"Remember the song?" Kate continued. She began to hum the tune of a song that made Diane smile and in no time, they began to sing together:
Aruba, Jamaica, oh I want to take you to Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama Key Largo, Montego, baby why don't we go Oh, I want to take you down to Kokomo, we'll get there fast and then we'll take it slow That's where we want to go, way down in Kokomo "Come on, let's get out of here," Kate said as she pulled Diane up with her. "I'm starving."
