Chapter 72 Seventy-Two
"I'm going to be a mom?" Danica asked, not sure if she had heard the doctor correctly. "What do you mean I'm going to be a mom?"
The air around Danica had grown thin, and she was having a very hard time breathing. After everything that had happened in the past two days, she wasn't sure she could even handle any more surprises. Not to mention, there was about to be a war; how could she possibly have gotten herself pregnant?
"Exactly as I said, Luna." Dr. Gerald chirped, oblivious to the fact that Danica wasn't happy about his news. "You're about a month along already."
Turning her gaze to Mason, Danica tried to make sense of what was going on. Unlike her, Mason was smiling from ear to ear as he met Danica's eyes.
"We're going to be parents!" Mason exclaimed, laughing. "Are you sure, Dr. Gerald?"
"Yep, pretty positive; the hormone levels don't lie." Dr. Gerald confirmed passing his clipboard over to Mason. "Congratulations again, Alpha."
"Thanks." Mason beamed, examining the blood test results as Dr. Gerald exited the room.
"I can't believe this." Danica whispered, looking at her lap, as reality began to set in. "Mason, what are we going to do?"
Seeming to finally realize something was off, Mason lifted his gaze and fixed it on Danica.
"What do you mean, what are we going to do?" He asked slowly, arching a brow.
"I can't have a baby right now." Danica continued as panic began to build. "The harpies and trolls are beginning an uprising, and a war is looming over us. How can I possibly be pregnant at a time like this?"
"Calm down." Mason urged moving forward and grabbing Danica's face, making her look at him. "Deep breaths; you gotta remain calm."
"How?" Danica asked as images of everything that had been happening ran through her brain. "Mason, I just had wolf's bane running through my system as well."
Mason's eyes widened as his face paled. "Stay right there; I will go get Dr. Gerald!"
"Wait!" Danica called to Mason's already retreating form.
Sighing Danica allowed her hand to fall onto her lap as she stared out into the hallway, where Mason had just disappeared.
"Pregnant." Danica whispered, placing a hand on her stomach.
She was still having a hard time believing that she was going to be a mother. The pace at which her life had changed from just three months prior was mind-blowing, and she was having a hard time accepting it.
Everything from meeting Mason to discovering she was a werewolf to learning that she had not only light blood but rogue blood, to the deceit of the harpies, and now the fact that she was going to be a mother. All of it was so much to bear.
Feeling tears sting the corner of her eyes, Danica allowed a small sob to escape her as she rubbed her still-flat stomach.
"Please be okay." She whispered again and again until Mason and Dr. Gerald returned.
"What's wrong?" Mason asked immediately, taking in Danica's state. "Are you in pain?"
"No," Danica responded, looking up to meet Mason's eyes. "I'm just overwhelmed."
"It's going to be okay." Mason assured Danica, moving forward and wrapping his arms around her. "I promise I won't let anything happen to you or the baby."
"Mason, you can't predict the future." Danica whispered against his chest. "What if something already happened thanks to Marie?"
"In another two weeks, we can perform an ultrasound." Dr. Gerald piped in, trying to help calm Danica.
Two weeks, Danica wasn't sure if she could last that long. The fear of the unknown was slowly beginning to crash in on her, and it was raising her level of anxiety.
"Is there no way to know before that?" Mason asked, reading Danica's train of thought. "I want to know now if my child is okay."
"It is still too early, Alpha." Dr. Gerald huffed in annoyance at Mason's demanding tone. "From the blood tests, Luna's hormonal levels are right where they need to be; that in itself is a good sign. As for knowing anything else, we need to wait for her to be at least six weeks old to check if the fetus is growing properly."
"There has to be something!" Mason insisted, refusing to accept the doctor's response. "Whether it be medical or metaphysical, there has to be a way to check and see if that damn wolfs bane harmed our child!"
"I'm sorry, Alpha; there really isn't anything."
"That's enough." Danica said, taking a shaky breath. "Irritating the doctor won't change anything."
Even though Danica's heart was filled with fear, she knew that being impatient and pushing wouldn't get them the answers that they needed. At this time, the only thing she and Mason could do was focus on the upcoming war between the darklands and their world while they waited for their child to be developed enough to check.
"Thank you for everything, doctor." Danica said, forcing a smile. "Would it be okay if we headed out?"
"Do you feel able to leave?" Dr. Gerald asked in concern. "If not, you may stay here for one night to try to regain your strength. If you feel any discomfort, we can also give you something pregnancy-safe for pain."
"I'm okay." Danica lied; the injury to her leg sent a wave of pain through her as she flexed it. "I just want to go back to my own home and sleep; these past few days have been exhausting."
"Sure." Dr. Gerlad said, smiling sympathetically. "Alpha, if she has any issues or discomfort, bring her back immediately."
"Will do, doctor." Mason retorted, already beginning to lift Danica off the bed.
"Mason." Danica hissed in surprise. "I've told you I can walk."
"Nope." Mason refused instantly. "Not only are you severely hurt, but you are now carrying my child; no way in hell am I going to allow you to exert yourself."
"Please tell me you don't plan to baby me the entire 9 months I'm pregnant." Danica argued, feeling irritation at the mere thought of Mason being overly protective. "I'm not that fragile."
"Says who?" Mason asked while nodding goodbye to Dr. Gerald.
"Says me."
Chuckling Mason just shook his head as he hurried out of the hospital into the night beyond.
