Chapter 62 Sixty-Two
"Are you sure about this?" Mason asked Danica, his eyes filled with worry.
Danica simply smiled. "If we don't do something soon, I may not make it." Closing her eyes, she took in a raggid breath. "Go ahead and get to it, Dr. Williams."
Danica could hear the sounds of Dr. Williams moving around his equipment as he prepared to first clean the area that was ripped before starting to suture.
"This is going to sting." Dr. Williams warmed just as a cotton guaze covered in alcohol touched Danica's neck.
Biting down on her lip Danica fought the yelp that was threatening to escape her. She knew that Mason was watching her every move and would demand the procedure be stopped at any given second if she showed any signs of discomfort.
"Now, alpha I'm going to need you to hold the skin in place for me so that I can begin to sew it shut." Dr. Williams commanded as the feeling of the cotton guaze was removed from her neck.
"Right." Mason responded, sounding determined.
Where Mason touched, he sent waves of warmth through Danica, grounding her as Dr. Williams began his work. With each new insertion, Danica felt herself wanting to scream out, but she continued to clamp down on any signs of discomfort she may have had. She had to endure; she couldn't allow Dr. William's to be stopped if she wanted to make it through this.
"You can remove your hand now, alpha." Dr. Williams murmured.
There was a brief moment of hesitation as Mason continued to keep his fingers in place before finally obeying the doctor and removing them.
With Mason's warmth gone, the pain Danica felt intensified as Dr. Williams expertly sewed her flesh back together. It was only when she felt that she couldn't hold out any longer that the torture finally stopped, allowing her a brief moment of peace.
"Is that it?" Mason asked quickly once Dr. Williams had finished. "Is she going to be okay now?"
"She needs a blood transfusion." Dr. Williams responded, sighing. "We've stopped the bleeding, but we need to replace the blood in her body that she has lost."
"Then get to it!" Mason snapped, "What are you waiting for?"
"Do you happen to know her blood type?" Dr. Williams asked Mason curiously.
"No..." Mason began.
"O-," Danica murmured, opening her eyes and fixing them on the doctor and Mason. "I am 0-."
"Let me go check if we have any extra supplies of that blood here." Dr. Williams said, quickly leaving the room.
"How are you feeling, baby?" Mason asked quickly, making his way to Danica's side. "You're doing amazing hanging in there."
Danica let out a weak laugh. "I'll be fine." She responded as she felt a wave of dizziness run through her again. "I just need to rest."
As she began to close her eyes, Danica caught a quick look of panic cross Mason's face as he grabbed her hand.
"Oh no, you don't." He commanded, drawing Danica's attention to him. "You aren't going to sleep; you're going to stay awake and talk to me."
Mason's voice sounded as if it were coming through cotton as he spoke. It had taken a lot of energy out of Danica to remain calm and collected while Dr. Williams sutured her neck up, and now that the adreneline from that was beginning to wear off, she was feeling very tired.
"Baby, you better stay with me!" Mason growled as tears began to spring up in his eyes.
Fixing her gaze on Mason, Danica smiled as she lifted a hand and placed it on his cheek to wipe a tear away. "Just a little rest." She murmured as her eyes drifted closed.
Danica could feel herself floating, and an all-consuming warmth was embracing her. Opening her eyes, she found herself in complete darkness. Looking around, she attempted to find something, anything, to determine exactly where she was, but was coming up short.
"Danica..." The all-too-familiar voice drifted to Danica through the darkness. "Honey."
"Martha..." Danica sobbed as she continued to look around wildly for her. "Martha, where are you?"
As her voice echoed all around, a small light could be seen beginning to form in the distance. The closer Danica came to it, the bigger the light grew until it was the shape of a human.
Stopping, Danica held a hand above her eyes to try to block some of the glare it was radiating.
"Sweetheart." Martha spoke again as the light figure began to move towards Danica. "Why are you here?"
"Here?" Danica asked in confusion. "Where exactly is here?"
Looking around again, Danica found that the darkness around her was beginning to shift and form into a lush field filled with perfect white lilies that surrounded a single well.
"Sweetheart, it isn't your time yet." Martha murmured as the white-light figure shook its head. "You have to go back; that boy is waiting on you."
"Martha."
Lunging forward, Danica wrapped her arms around the figure that she had determined was Martha in her celestial form. Continuing to sob, she hugged her tightly against her.
"It's okay." Martha murmured as a warm hand began to pat Danica's back. "It's okay, sweetheart."
"Why did you leave me?" Danica wailed as she hugged Martha tighter. "Why?"
"Now isn't the time," Martha responded before gently prying Danica's hold from her. "You have to go back before you can't."
"Go back?" Danica asked, sniffling. "Go back where?"
The celestial Martha simply gave what looked to be a sad expression as she placed a hand on Danica's cheek. "You have to go back to that boy and everyone that needs you."
"But you need me too!" Danica argued stubbornly. "If anyone needs me the most right now, it is you."
"My time is already gone." Martha spoke, her voice dripping with content. "Now, I am passing you along to your mate and your new pack."
"But..." Danica began, only to have Martha hold up a hand.
"No buts... You must go back to those who love and care for you."
Suddenly the celestial Martha disappeared as visions of Mason, Bella, Chris, Abigail, Sophia, and the entire Cove pack began to form before Danica. Each image tugged at Danica's heart more and more until she felt as if she couldn't breathe.
"You see." Martha said, reappearing. "These are the people that need you now; you must go back to them."
"What about you?" Danica asked as a knot began to form in her throat once more. "What will happen to you?"
"I will always be watching you." Martha responded, moving forward and hugging Danica. "Now, go back."
As Martha's words hit her, Danica could feel herself beginning to slip as the earth below her disappeared, until she was left falling into oblivion.
