Chapter 60 A DANGEROUS PROMISE
CHAPTER 60
JEREMY'S POV
A DANGEROUS PROMISE
I signed the paper work with irritation, that the pen snapped in half. The nurse thanked me with a professional smile. I barely paid her any attention, because the lady on my right was glaring at her. Lana has always been jealous and paranoid, that's why we broke up.
She has been hovering around me like a shadow. It's as if she has forgotten the way she ended things with me that day. She doesn't have any right to be around me, but I didn't want to be rude.
Dad's phone echoed from the hallway, as he spoke on his phone with his sister. He ended the call and gestured towards the exit. “Jeremy, we'll talk at home.” he said in a firm tone.
The ride back home was silent, but Lana kept stealing glances at me with a hopeful smile. But I stared out the window with a locked jaw. She was dropped off at her upscale apartment. “I invited her for dinner.” dad said. “She's good for you.”
I didn't respond to him until we were halfway down the road.
“Dad, we broke up. We're not together anymore. Besides, I like someone else.”
He scoffed and waved me off. “No, you're not son.”
“Her name is Grace. And you can't….”
“I know too much,” dad cut in. “And I'm telling you as your father, and head of this family. That girl isn't good for you.”
“Dad….” I swallowed.
“I thought you were smart,” dad said softly. “Don't push it, Jeremy. I'll disown you and leave you with nothing. You'll be on the same level with Richard.”
He looked at me and paused, the driver looked at us from the rear mirror briefly. “Marry Lana, she stabilizes you. She understands our world. Grace…..” his lip curled faintly. “She's a horny trap for you.”
I clenched my fist and stared ahead. My muscles stiffen as thoughts raced through my mind. He doesn't give empty threats, he means it to the core. He'll strip me of everything, and pit me against Richard.
I'm in a bind. I don't want Lana, I want Grace. But she'll cost me everything.
The car stopped at home and I came down, helped dad down from the car. His nurse was a petite, blond, brown eyes, button nose and slim body lady.
She walks towards him with purpose, and a professional smile on her face.
“Dad, I'll be in my room.” I said with a straight face.
He nodded without looking at me, the house was swarming with security detail for dad. I got up to my bedroom after climbing the spiral stairs as my irritation grew.
I hate being cornered, I hated dad for putting me in such a spot. I can't leave everything for Richard, and I can't stay without Grace in my life.
“That's some load of shit.” I thought to myself.
The dinner came earlier than I expected. I came down from my room, wearing a shirt and a black dress pants. Lana stood beside me smiling, and acting like she owned everything.
The maids open the door and Richard enters with Mrs Harley. I tensed immediately and Lana looked up at me.
“Are you okay babe?” she asked me.
“Yes, just tired.”
Richard walked straight up to me, with a smile on his face. “Jeremy, you have a thing for beautiful women.” he said to Lana and kissed her hands.
“Get away from her.” I barked at him.
Mrs Harley looked sad, Richard looked like he was having fun.
Lana slides her hand onto my arm, calming me down.
“My baby, breathe. It's just a family dinner.”
I nodded but I hated how she called me babe in front of everyone.
Dad comes downstairs slowly with his nurse, supporting him down. He looked better but still radiated arrogance. He studied Richard carefully like he was a stray dog, and not his son.
“You all, let's go to the dining room.” he says in a firm voice.
I sat down and Lana sat down beside me, dad sat at the head chair and his hands clasped together.
“You want to be a part of this family so bad? You have to prove that you're worthy.” dad said bluntly.
My anger spikes and dad glances at me. “Jeremy, it's been settled then,” he said, threatening me.
“A man who keeps his promise. And a good son respects his father's wishes.”
“You're right, dad.” Richard added.
My stomach twists. Because I remembered the moment that dad made, my marriage to Lana a condition on receiving proper health care.
“If you don't think about your stability and marry Lana. Don't expect me to listen to you, and get treatment. I'll die and it'll be your fault.” he threatened in a calm voice.
I agreed and I hated myself for that. Dad coughs and waves his nurse off, when she tries to attend to him.
“Richard park your stuff. You'll be staying here from now on. I want to see if you're fit to carry my name.”
Richard gives a small nod eager to please.
“Absolutely not.” Mrs Harley steps forward.
The room freezes in silence, and I watch the tension in the room. But it didn't bother me because I was drinking just to get through this dinner.
“Jeremy, that's enough.” Lana said with grit teeth.
Father narrowed his eyes at her, Lana smirks. I wanted to defend Mrs Harley but thought against it. Because I'm tired of my father using me, and Lana suffocating me with her kindness. I just want Grace and I hated myself for that.
“I don't trust you with him, Richard. He's not staying here.” She repeats firmly.
Richard stayed silent, his eyes fixed on dad. I held my breath waiting for the explosion, because dad's eyes were blazing from her outburst.
Lana puts our cheeks together, and takes a selfie. “Jay, I'm waiting for my ring.” she says typing on her phone.
“Mom, I'm old enough to stay with whoever. I want to stay with my dad.” he says to Mrs Harley.
Dad smiles at him approving of his decision. “It's settled then you'll be staying with me.”
Mrs Harley didn't say anything further, she sighed in defeat and touched her face.
Lana stood up and walked closer to Richard, offering comfort to him. Richard looks at her and smiles cruelly.
