Chapter 14

The room was hushed, shadows dancing on the walls as candles flickered in the dim light. We had gathered in a circle, a sense of purpose and determination in the air. Lisa's hands trembled slightly as she held the planchette of the ouija board, her gaze fixed on the board's letters and numbers. Around us, the air felt charged with anticipation and the unknown.

"Uncle John, if you can hear us, we're here to help," Lisa's voice quivered as she spoke. She closed her eyes, her concentration deepening, and slowly moved the planchette across the board. The rest of us watched in silence, our hearts beating in rhythm with the flickering candles.

As Lisa continued to move the planchette, spelling out words and sentences, an eerie sense of connection filled the room. It was as if the barrier between the living and the departed had become thin, allowing us to glimpse into a realm beyond our own.

"Are you there, Uncle John?" Samantha's voice was a mere whisper, laden with hope and uncertainty.

The planchette glided over the letters, spelling out "YES."

A collective breath was released, and Lisa's eyes glistened with tears as she realized she was indeed communicating with her uncle's spirit. We took turns asking questions, seeking to understand the predicament he was in.

"Uncle John, why are the shadows after you?" Brandon's question hung in the air.

"They fear me," Lisa's fingers moved the planchette. "They want to stop me from crossing over."

"How can we help you?" I ventured, my voice barely audible.

Uncle John's responses were fragmented, his words tinged with urgency. "Banish them... break the connection... the spell…"

As we listened intently, the candles suddenly extinguished with a sharp gust of wind that seemed to emanate from nowhere. Panic gripped the room as Aili's gaze darted around, a sense of foreboding seeping into our collective consciousness.

"Aili, do you sense them?" Samantha's voice quivered with anxiety.

Aili's expression tightened, her senses heightened as a shiver ran down her spine. "Yes, they're here—shadows, dark and malevolent."

Before we could react, Lisa's eyes widened in horror as she let out an agonized scream. Her body convulsed, and her features contorted as if in the grip of an invisible force. I lunged forward, reaching for her, but it was as if an impenetrable barrier stood between us.

"Lisa!" Samantha's voice was a mix of fear and determination as she, too, tried to break through the invisible barrier that held Lisa captive.

But Lisa's gaze was vacant, her voice hollow as if it belonged to someone—or something—else. "You cannot save him. I will not be stopped."

The room seemed to pulse with an otherworldly energy, the air thick with a sense of malevolence. It was as if we were witnessing a battle between light and darkness, between the living and the shadows that sought to consume Lisa's essence.

With a jolt, Lisa's body went limp, and the room fell silent—a silence broken only by our heavy breathing and the weight of uncertainty that now hung in the air.

In that moment, as the boundary between our world and the realm of shadows wavered, we realized the enormity of the task before us. Samantha rushed towards Lisa's body as Lisa's eyes flattered open.

"what happened?" she asked and I breathed out in relief because I seriously didn't know what to do if she had still been possessed.

The library felt charged with a mixture of excitement and determination. Books were scattered across the large wooden table, their pages filled with ancient knowledge and mysteries waiting to be unraveled. Samantha, Brandon, Nick, and I huddled around, focused on a particular journal that promised a solution to our predicament.

"Here it is," Nick's voice held a note of triumph as his fingers traced the words on the page. "A banishing spell to ward off evil spirits."

Lisa's eyes flickered with a mix of hope and apprehension. "Do you really think this will work?"

"We won't know unless we try," Samantha replied, her determination mirrored by the rest of us.

With the instructions laid out before us, we set about gathering the necessary materials—candles, herbs, and a pentagram drawn with precision. Samantha couldn't help but crack a small smile. "If anyone walks in right now, they'll think we're holding a secret witch meeting."

Brandon's lips curled into a playful smirk. "As long as we don't start flying on broomsticks."

We arranged ourselves in a circle, the candles casting dancing shadows on our faces as we joined hands. In the center of the circle lay the ouija board, a gateway to the otherworldly realm.

"Lisa, are you ready for this?" I asked softly, squeezing her hand in reassurance.

She took a deep breath, her gaze steady. "I have to do this for Uncle John."

With the candles flickering and the air thick with anticipation, Lisa summoned her uncle's spirit once more. The planchette moved with an otherworldly grace, spelling out the words of the agreement. Lisa's voice wavered but remained strong as she consented to her uncle's possession, a selfless act of love and courage.

And then, as if a veil had lifted, the shadows appeared—a sinister presence that seemed to envelop the room in an icy grip. Lisa's expression contorted, but this time it was a deliberate gesture—an offering to the shadows.

As the darkness threatened to take hold, we united our voices in a powerful incantation, the words flowing seamlessly as we recited the banishing spell. The air crackled with energy, our collective will channeled through ancient words of power.

The shadows writhed and recoiled, their malevolence confronted by the sheer force of our intent. The room vibrated with the clash of opposing energies, a battle between light and darkness that pulsed through the very fabric of our reality.

And then, just as suddenly as they had appeared, the shadows dissipated—a swirling vortex of darkness consumed by the brilliance of our combined efforts. Lisa's body relaxed, the weight of possession lifted, and her eyes filled with wonder.

"It worked," Samantha breathed in disbelief.

Lisa's smile was radiant, tears of relief streaming down her cheeks. "I can feel him... he's gone, but he's at peace."

As the candles burned low, we shared a moment of triumphant camaraderie. We had faced the shadows head-on, harnessing the power of ancient knowledge and the strength of our friendship. In that sacred space, we had banished not only the darkness that sought to consume us but also the doubts that had once plagued our hearts.
