Chapter 15

KELLY

The night was shrouded in darkness as young Kelly lay in her bed. She watched the crystal Leprechaun doll close, its eerie glow casting unsettling shadows across her room. Sherfield's Leprechaun Festival had been exciting earlier, but now, as she lay alone in the silence of her room, unease crept in.

A creaking sound from her closet snapped her eyes open. Her heart raced as the closet door slowly swung open, revealing only darkness within. Fear constricted her throat, but curiosity pushed her to watch.

Suddenly, the unmistakable sound of tiny footsteps echoed under her bed. Panic set in as her mind raced through every frightening possibility. Could it be a mouse, she wondered? But this was no ordinary mouse; it felt like something much more sinister.

A chilling breeze swept through her room, causing Kelly to shiver. She reached for the light switch, her trembling fingers fumbling in the darkness. But her curiosity got the better of her, and instead of lighting up the room, she decided to take a cautious peek under her bed.

As she lowered her head and peered into the dim abyss below, she saw nothing but the usual clutter of forgotten toys and dust bunnies. Just as she began to feel a glimmer of relief, her heart sank.

Two enormous, blood-red eyes materialized from the shadows, staring back at her with malevolent intent. Before she could scream, a powerful force yanked her from her bed and dragged her, kicking and flailing, under the very bed she had checked.

The room plunged into eerie silence once more, the only trace of what had transpired a distant muffled whimper that sent shivers down the spine of anyone who might have been listening.

The early morning fog enshrouded Sherfield, giving the town an eerie and mysterious aura. Samantha and I walked towards school, our breath visible in the chilled air. The fog clung to the trees, turning them into shadowy figures, and the streetlamps seemed like solemn sentinels guarding the town's secrets.

My eyes caught sight of something odd as we passed by the trees. Posters, affixed with staples, were plastered on tree trunks and telephone poles. They seemed like silent cries for help, but one in particular sent shivers down my spine.

"That face... It looks familiar," I whispered to Samantha, my voice barely audible above the foggy hush.

Samantha followed my gaze, and recognition flickered in her eyes. "Isn't that one of those juniors we saw playing with that creepy Leprechaun doll in the school basement yesterday?"

I nodded, a sense of dread settling in. The missing person's poster displayed Kelly's innocent face, and her sudden disappearance now cast a dark cloud over our town. There was something undeniably wrong about this situation.

As we continued our walk to school, the weight of Kelly's disappearance pressed on our minds. Samantha couldn't help but voice the question that had been haunting both of us. "Do you think something...unnatural happened to her?"

"I just feel like something bad has happened or is happening" I said

In class, the unease lingered, and Kelly's vanishing act dominated the conversations. Whispers and murmurs filled the air as rumors swirled. We exchanged concerned glances, and it became clear that we needed to take matters into our own hands.

During a break, Samantha, Lisa, and I gathered, our voices hushed as we outlined our plan. We were determined to uncover the truth behind Kelly's disappearance. With a shared sense of resolve, we decided to visit Kelly's house after school, hoping to uncover any clues that might explain her sudden and mysterious absence.

We stood on Kelly's doorstep, putting on our best sympathetic faces, ready to play the part of the concerned "senior friends." As her parents opened the door, we greeted them with half-hearted smiles.

"Hello, Mrs. Morrison. Mr. Morrison," Samantha began with a tone that tried to convey warmth. "We heard about Kelly, and we just wanted to see if there was anything we could do to help. You know, we're kind of like big sisters to her."

Kelly's mom, Laura, looked grateful for our visit, and as we were invited inside, she led us to the living room. Her eyes were swollen from crying, and there was an air of despair hanging over their home.

Laura recounted the morning they discovered Kelly's disappearance. "We woke up, and she was just...gone. It's as if she vanished into thin air," she said, her voice quivering with anguish. "The police have been here, but they couldn't find any signs of fowl play or struggle. We have no idea where she could be."

Lisa, Samantha, and I exchanged uneasy glances. It was heartbreaking to witness Kelly's parents in such agony. While they continued to talk, I excused myself, asking if I could use the bathroom. Instead, I silently ventured into Kelly's room, feeling like an intruder but desperate for any clues that could help us solve this perplexing mystery.

Her room appeared ordinary, with the trappings of a typical child's bedroom. Posters of pop stars adorned the walls, and stuffed animals were scattered across her bed. But something about this room felt amiss.

Then, my eyes landed on it—the crystal Leprechaun doll, sitting on her dresser. It was the same one we had seen the junior students playing with in the school basement, and the same one that had sent chills down my spine.

As I approached it, I noticed something unusual. Small, nearly invisible shadows seemed to flicker around the doll's glassy surface. They were easy to miss if you weren't looking closely, but their presence sent a shiver down my spine.

Gasping, I carefully picked up the doll, knowing that there was something undeniably wrong about it. I grabbed the doll and placed it in my bag before returning to the living room.

Back at Samantha's house, we gathered around the crystal Leprechaun doll on her bedroom floor, its malevolent presence palpable.

I held it up, my hands trembling. "There's something seriously wrong with this doll. I could see these... shadows around it, like they're lingering in the air."

Samantha, always the resourceful one, promptly retrieved her laptop. "Let's see if we can find anything about this." She typed in "Leprechaun curse" and started scrolling through the results.

As the webpage loaded, we read an eerie tale about Leprechauns, far from the merry mischief-makers we'd thought they were. The story unfolded in a time long ago, when a group of Leprechauns became corrupted by a lust for power.

These rogue Leprechauns, rather than guarding their pots of gold, sought even greater riches. In their insatiable greed, they began stealing children from the nearby villages, not for ransom, but for something far more sinister.

The children were used as sacrifices in dark rituals to amplify the Leprechauns' magical abilities. The Leprechauns believed that the souls of innocent children contained immense power, and they used them to cast malevolent spells.

Over time, the villages were devastated as families lost their beloved sons and daughters. Fear gripped the hearts of the villagers, and they soon came to dread the Leprechauns.

Samantha's voice wavered as she read, "It says here that these cursed Leprechauns would trap the souls of children in crystal dolls, binding them to serve their dark purposes for all eternity."

I looked down at the Leprechaun doll in my hands, a chilling realization settling in. "So maybe, this doll contains a trapped soul, and those shadows... they must be the souls of the children these cursed Leprechauns have stolen."

Lisa, always empathetic, was visibly shaken. "But why would this doll end up with Kelly? And why is it still causing harm?"

Samantha continued reading, her eyes wide with newfound knowledge. "It says the curse can be broken if the doll is returned to the place where the child was taken."

"do you believe in all of this. That this will save Kelly?" Lisa asked

I sighed "we have to try something. We have to help Kelly's parents in any way we can. I feel like we need to do this"

"me too, it's strange but I have this urge to just help them. I can't imagine losing a child or little sister just like that without any explanation. Living the rest of your life not knowing what happened." Samantha said with a sad tone

I could feel the weight of responsibility settling on our shoulders. We had to save Kelly.
