Chapter 246
Chapter 246
Conrad POV
Two since the shadow war and Malik's demise. One week since Lewana was put on bed rest. Four weeks until the Luna Queen Ceremony and five until the twins are due. And strangely enough, I've never felt more at peace.
I'm sitting in my office looking out the window at the pack when I realised the panic normally in my chest wasn't there. All Alpha duties have been split with Arthur, so I can focus more on my mates' care. Liam is running the company holdings. We have two new pack members being trained as Beta's so we have more support in the pack. One is shadowing Arthur, and another is shadowing Liam. We have also removed training from the Beta's portfolio and have a more defined hierarchy, like the military within the ranks.
No more complete control and panicking over the small detail. No more weight on my shoulder to manage everything personally. A pack supporting the pack as it should be, with the mother and father overseeing the work and guiding, as opposed to authority ordering compliance.
It's nearly lunch time, so I head to the kitchen to see Mary.
"Hey mum". I walk over and hug her while she is cooking something on the stove top.
"Hi, honey. How is she doing today?" I know instantly she is referring to Lewana.
"Same. Scared. Uncomfortable. Tired".
Mary just sighs. "Well, unfortunately, this is to be expected at this time of her pregnancy. We are most vulnerable at this stage, as she would struggle to fend off another attack with each day that passes. Honestly, it was a miracle she was able to fight in the war, let alone win".
I can't stop the smile spreading to my lips. "I know. I always knew she was amazing, but she never ceases to amaze me. I honestly just hope things can calm down for her so she can have a non-eventful life with our pups".
Mary chuckles. "Non-eventful and twin pups don't go in the same sentence".
"Fine. I will settle for no more attempts on our lives, and no kidnappings".
Mary comes over and rubs my back. "No one can promise you that in your position. But we can promise you that your allies and pack will be there to back you up as you lead us. I can feel you know. The change in the pack".
I smile. "I can feel it too".
I help Mary prepare the lunches and start placing items on the tray to take to my mate, when I hear the door open. I turn, expecting to see Liam, but I see Lewana standing there barefoot and dressed in one of her maternity dresses.
I rushed to her side to help her. "Moonlight, what are you doing out of bed? You're meant to be resting".
She looks with determination, clearly having prepared a speech and prepared for an argument.
"I am not staying in bed, isolated, for an entire month. I know my own body, and I can handle a little bit of walking, so I'm going to start coming to family dinners again and doing short walks. I am only going to go as far as the medical clinic, so I can check in with the pack, and I will have a room down there where I can rest".
Jace and I are furious that she is putting herself at risk, but we try to stay calm. "No. For your and the pups' safety, you are on bed rest".
She instantly snaps back. "No. If I stay up in that room for five more weeks, I'll be the one developing lunacy".
My stomach drops, and I growl at her. "Don't even joke about that".
We both turn when we hear Mary tut at us. "Honestly, you two. Keep it up, and we will have to hire a referee to manage all communication".
I take a deep breath and turn to Mary to explain my side. "You saw her that night, Mary. You know we came close to potentially losing the pups. The medic was very clear. Bed rest until delivery for all of their safety".
She walks over and holds my hands. "He did say bed rest. But you both know as well as I do that werewolf complications are not well documented or treated. The main person we need to consult with is Serena, as she will be most in tune with what is happening".
We both turn to Lewana and wait for her answer.
"She says we're fine and can handle a small amount of movement".
I cross my arms and face her. "I'll believe you when she tells me that".
I can see her debating, possibly having a conversation with Serena to stick to the story. This just adds to my annoyance. As soon as I see her eyes start to turn that light blue, I encourage Jace to come forward as well.
Jace reaches out and pulls her face to look directly into his glowing eyes. "Tell me, pretty eyes. Why are you not in bed?"
Under Jace's intense gaze, she cracks immediately and starts whimpering. "I don't want to be away from my pack. I don't like being left alone".
We can see the tears forming in her eyes and instantly pull her into our arms. Jace purrs to her. "Don't cry. I don't like seeing those pretty eyes filled with tears".
Mary steps forward to comfort her. "It's understandable that you are struggling, Serena. Alphas always do, as it is their job to run the pack, and when they can't, they feel guilty. We need to find a way to keep you included but still have your body resting. I know you have been told about the Order of Light, so how about I start training some Omegas to help you and look after the pups when they are born?".
Serena thinks about this for a moment. "Would they protect the pups like you protected Liam?"
Mary smiles. "Absolutely".
Serena seems lost in thought for a moment. "Do you miss the order? You must be alone to".
"I made my peace with that a long time ago. I know the order will die with me, but I'm not alone. Looking after both of you was our final mission. One I will have succeeded at when you're coronated, and the pups are born".
