Chapter 170 The Council Falls
Chapter 170 The Council Falls
The High Council chambers had long stood as one of the few true neutral grounds in the supernatural world. Buried beneath the ruins of the old courthouse and protected by powerful seals and sacred pacts that had been in existence long before every government in the modern world. It was where power spoke in whispers and ancient grudges were set aside in favor of maintaining the fragile peace that allowed the supernaturals to live hidden lives among the human inhabitants of Tenebrous. No magic was allowed within its inner circle–No weapons. Only oaths.
Tonight however, those oaths bled in silence.
The inner chamber was buzzing with activity, lit by floating orbs that sparkled with blue magical lights. The sixteen high council members were gathered in a crescent formation, seated on their unique thrones made from carved obsidian and ashwood. Among them were seers, witches, alphas, vampire nobles, and scholars of ancient and powerful bloodlines. At the head of the council sat High Elder Gaeron, a century old Ultra Alpha werewolf that had seen the rise and fall of many bloodlines.
“The intelligence is clear,” Gaeron was saying in a grave and anxious voice. “Ever since we rejected their plan to wage war and claim the city for ourselves, Maverick and Elara have resorted to uniting rogue factions for their dark ambitions. The Blood Pact is not a rumor. It is reality.”
Heavy murmurs echoed across the chamber. One of the vampire elders, Lady Crissa, another ancient member of the council frowned in annoyance. “And why has Alex Ravenswood not called for a full conclave? Has he not unlocked the crystal's ability and mastered the Lupine Dominion within him?”
“Ravenswood is a war strategist,” muttered another member. “He might already be making his own moves to stop Maverick and that were-witch. I am sure we have all seen his efforts in the media.”
“We don’t have time for games,” a warlock snapped angrily. “Our cover has been blown already, and Tenebrous is slowly slipping through our fingers.”
Before Gaeron could respond, a strange shockwave tore through the chamber. It was followed by a sudden change in pressure, and trembling of the floating lights. A second later, the ground exploded.
A huge column of flame and debris shot upward from the center of the room. The stone walls of the building cracked in multiple places, and even the ceiling buckled. Magic screamed in the air as protective shields and barriers failed all at once. A blood bound emergency defense spell hidden deep beneath the floor ignited in a surge of raw chaos, blowing apart the central altar in the chamber.
The council elders screamed, and bodies were thrown apart like helpless rag dolls due to the powerful magical force of the blast. Gaeron stood only long enough to raise a trembling hand before a falling chunk of wall crushed him to pieces.
Then came the second blast.
It was darker, and colder. There was no fire, just a black void magic. Silent and inescapable. The entire chamber imploded inward, crushing powerful pillars, swallowing every source of light, and ending every life within it.
Alex was standing in front of his emergency war room monitors when the alarm for danger started wailing. At first, no one said anything. Then the message came through twice, loud and clear.
Magical breach. Council Chamber compromised. Casualties: High.
Simon who was standing beside him stared at the screen in disbelief. “What on earth just happened?”
Alex's face was pale as he watched Simon tap into the security feeds they had previously set up all around the High Council premises. Most of them had been destroyed, but one on the outside had managed to survive the carnage.
It showed a single hooded figure kneeling before the main entrance to the chamber. Carefully, methodically, placing blood red stones in a triangle, and pressing his or her palm against the floor while obviously muttering spells. The camera footage trembled as magic spun around the person. When the figure finally stood and turned, the magic around faded away, and they saw the face.
Elara.
Avery had been watching silently, horrified by the devastating news and footage they had received and seen. But at the sight of Elara, her face tightened in anger and hatred. “She killed them. All of them.”
“They went for the elders first,” Melora said, entering the room behind them. “This move was not about instilling fear. It was about annihilating an enemy that could raise up an army of supernaturals against them.”
“You are very correct,” Simon replied, looking perplexed. “She knew exactly when and where they would be before carrying out this attack.”
Alex's frown darkened even more. “Because someone gave her the meeting time.”
The impact of that one utterance silenced them all. There was no doubt about it, someone within the High Council or close to it had betrayed them all.
“Their objective is becoming very clear now.” Avery said in a very calm and controlled voice. “They want to completely erase the entire identity of the old Tenebrous. The government, the council elders, and the law. They want to rebuild it all in their own image.”
Alex didn’t answer. He simply turned away and spoke in a very stern and concerned voice. “Double check our security and magic shields, and place the entire estate on a high threat lockdown.”
Simon looked at him in surprise. “Do you think she will attempt to strike here next?”
“For all we know, she may already have eyes within our walls,” Alex said solemnly. “And if the High council can fall despite their powerful magical defenses, there is no reason why we cannot be targets too.”
Later that evening, Rufus who was stationed at the front of the estate with two werewolf guards was the first to notice the approaching movement. The cameras quickly picked and identified the figure, and he chuckled in disbelief.
“You are not going to believe this,” he muttered into the walkie talkie in his hand.
Within minutes, Alex and the others were quickly at the gates, and on the other side of it was none other than Detective Mark Marlboro.
But there was something completely different about the Marlboro that stood in front of them. This version of Marlboro looked like he had not had any form of rest in the past week. His eyes were bloodshot, and his uniform was in shambles with his badge dangling crookedly.
“I came alone,” Marlboro said wearily. “And I am not here to fight you, Ravenswood.”
“Then why are you here?” Alex asked coldly, despite feeling a touch of compassion for Marlboro's miserable state.
Marlboro met his cold stare without flinching. “Because I know the entire truth now. It has been Maverick Stormbringer and that evil lady Elara all along. They have spies and agents in almost every key area of the city, and they have even managed to compromise the police force from the higher ups. And also, I am well aware that they managed to destroy your High council.”
“And now you are coming to us?” Alex asked, not surprised in any way.
“I should have come to you sooner,” Marlboro admitted. “But I did not know who to trust anymore. Now–I don’t have the luxury of doubt, and I owe you an apology. All I want right now is a way to save this city from complete destruction.”
Alex looked at him for a long, and tense moment.
Then ordered Rufus to let him in.
Once inside, Alex suggested that Marlboro get some rest and a change of clothes, but Marlboro refused vehemently, insisting that he won't rest until a solid plan of protecting the city was in place.
Seeing that it was a hopeless venture in trying to convince Marlboro, Alex gave up and they all headed for the war room where a minute later, Marlboro was surrounded by supernatural beings he once considered to be the problem of the city.
“I want to help,” he said, when they were all seated. “But you have to understand. My men are all scared already. Half of them are dead, and the remaining half still think you all are part of the enemies.”
Alex gestured, and Melora stepped forward, placing a glowing artifact on the table.
“This is a spellcore,” she said calmly. “We use it to anchor protective enchantments to physical armor. We can replicate it for your squads if you don't mind.”
Simon also brought out a pair of sharp magical blades and ammunition, the kind used by Rufus and the other guards. “These weapons and ammunition will take down most supernatural creatures, and your best men can train with our elite guards to master their uses.”
Marlboro nodded, quickly. “This will make a huge difference, and I am really grateful for all this.”
Jessica, meanwhile, was already pulling data across the computer screens. She had built a digital report on Elara and Maverick in less than an hour, cross-referencing public records, encrypted archives, and decades of erased reports.
Avery leaned over her shoulder, impressed by what she was seeing. “You are planning a takedown piece?”
Jessica nodded. “Video campaigns on multiple fronts. Press, social, and even alternate channels. I want to put Maverick and Elara’s face on every screen with a trail of bodies behind them.”
“Do you think humans will care?” Alex asked, skeptical about the plan.
“They will care when they realize their leaders are being targeted, and also when they see us fighting to protect their streets alongside the good detective.”
Marlboro smiled at Alex. “It seems you have a capable team around you.”
“And it just got even more capable with you around,” Alex replied, returning the smile. “Maverick and Elara want seats on the throne of the city, let’s make sure the throne burns before they get the chance.”
Rufus cracked his knuckles. “Can I light the match?”
Simon grinned. “Only if you let me sharpen the blade.”
Alex looked up from the screen. “Tomorrow, we will release the campaign. I want them exposed before they strike again.”
Jessica handed him a tablet. On the screen was Maverick and Elara’s face with the words “Enemies of Order.”
Alex nodded in satisfaction.
The war for Tenebrous had become something bigger. Not just a battle for territory.
But a war for the soul of the city.
