Chapter 44
When Eric was delivered to the hiding spot by Darren and Eli, the she-wolves rallied around him, checking his wound to see how bad it was.
“We have to get him to a hospital quickly,” Mirabel Grey, Eli’s wife, said after assessing the wound on Eric’s thigh. She was an ER doctor with 11 years of experience under her belt. “The bullet is still inside, but it doesn’t seem to have hit any dangerous spot. Nevertheless, he needs medical attention ASAP.”
“I think we should avoid the hospitals for now,” Darren remarked. “We don’t want them asking questions that we’re not ready to answer right now.”
“Darren is right,” Ma Black agreed. “The doctors are obligated to report to the police once the injury involves a gunshot. We can’t risk police interference in this. Let’s handle this by ourselves.”
“Can you get the bullet out?” Eli asked his wife.
“Yes, if I have the necessary medical kit, but we’ll have to take him to our house in Moose Creek for that. There’s were my all my work stuff are kept.”
Eric groaned where he lay on the grass. He was in so much pain and he was thirsty and hungry too.
“Let’s go already,” Aubrey said with a sense of urgency.
“Which one of you is going to carry him?” Ma Black asked the two Alpha males in their midst.
“Not me,” Darren said quickly. “Gary needs me here.”
“Gary has two dozen werewolves looking out for him right now, he doesn’t need you,” Ma Black snapped at him.
Eli snickered. “Ouch.”
Darren frowned. “Still, I’m staying.”
“Suit yourself,” Ma Black replied dismissively.
“I’ll carry him,” Aubrey offered. “Come on, Mirabel. Let’s go.”
“Atta girl,” Ma Black said proudly.
“I have never seen you this selfless before, Aubrey,” Darren noted curiously. “Eric doesn’t seem like your type.”
“You’re correct, Darren. Eric is not my type, but he is my mate, and I will do everything within my power to protect and care for him. Now if you don’t have any other rude observations to declare, I’ll be on my way with my Beta mate.”
She lifted Eric up with her muzzle and flipped him on her back with such ease as if he were a rag doll.
“Let’s go, Mirabel. Eric needs your help right away,” Aubrey said.
“Of course,” Mirabel replied, following Aubrey as the latter shot off with her mate in human form perched on her back.
The other werewolves could only look on with stunned expressions on their faces. None of them would have ever guessed that Aubrey, of all werewolves, would accept Eric as her mate. It was mind-boggling. It was exciting, and it was a development they all wanted more details about. But first, destiny awaited. Gary was in the jaws of evil and they had to see to it that he was unharmed, or else, they were all doomed.
