Chapter 98 A teeth

No, Evyths thought, Draco couldn't be alive because Octavio had narrated what happened during the previous war. Valerio made sure to kill him. It couldn't be Draco, right? She wondered, her gaze slowly drifting, her thoughts drowning her.

And not to mention Raven who had been plotting against her and Ravencroft.

Evyths got on her feet, something clicked.

“Did Valerio know?” She whispered skeptically under breath.

Selena mirrored Evyths, staring searchingly at the goddess's avatar next to her.

“Did you know?” Selena asked.

Evyths snapped out of the thoughts, her lids flicked knowingly. “N-no. But are you sure about what you saw?”

Selena nodded eagerly. For that moment, her suspicion vanished. “Yes, yes. I cannot mistake the King's figure for something else, let alone the sorceress.” Selena looked away, searching through her memory. “It is the other person I do not know…”

“This could be dangerous. I wonder what the meeting could entail. Although we cannot jump into conclusions yet,”

“No we can't, but why a meeting with the sorceress and the other man?” Selena asked, letting her words sink in. “And before day breaks? It means that it is unofficial and private.”

Evyths nodded. Clearly it was suspicious and the fact that Valerio had tried to warn her about something like this puzzled her more.

He definitely knew Raven's plans if there were any. Which explained the war he was preparing for.

“Selena,” Evyths called calmly when the silence lingered awhile. Selena raised a brow, not contempt or surprise but a simple response. “Why did you tell me first? I am not a member of your pack or one of the elders. You could have told Ryker or Adler even…”

Selene's lips pursed, crossing her arms loosely. “Because you are what we could never become. The goddess's avatar — one who does not judge. Well, it is understandable if you do not believe me,”

As heavy as it sounded, it was way heavier when Selena said the words herself. It appeared like an added responsibility to Evyths, a path that already shaped the expectations of the werewolves about her.

“I believe you…” Evyths vowed then Selena met her gaze. “I do.” She affirmed.

Selena blinked like she expected something else. “Wh-why? I mean, why did you? I have been cruel to you—”

“What you have been to me does not amount to anything now. It is what you will do henceforth that does…” Evyths’ small smile came out unintendedly. Like a warning, yet harmless and unthreatingly.

The atmosphere breathed, each to their thought

Selena then nodded, smiling weakly. Her fingers scraped the insides of her palms. Evyths was indeed too calm and that alone scared her.

Before Selena could utter a word, Evyths placed a hand over the beta's shoulder. Just light enough to lessen the weight between them.

“Thank you for trusting me with this information. I promise, I will handle the matter with the king.”

Selena shook her head. “I would be a corpse if he finds out that I fed you such information,”

“How would be know if I don't tell him?” Evyths asked. Taking her silence for an answer, she continued. “This is discreet, just between us.”

Without further ado, Evyths left the temple

As soon as Evyths' feet touched the palace's grounds, she walked straight to the enforcers guarding the war room.

“Where is your king?” she demanded, her voice came out firmer than her expression.

The enforcers could have laughed or fallen on deaf ears but her interrogative gaze halted them.

“He is a meeting with the pack elders..”

“Very well, let me through.” she said quietly.

The enforcers moved away, not even a word left their tongue.
Evyths pushed the doors, the low creaking sound of the door caused heads to turn in her direction.
No one normally dared to interrupt an official meeting, especially with the king present but Evyths did.

Her expression vacant yet it carried something heavier than how she had stared at Oakley within this same walls..

Each step clicked with a warning; something was not right, the pack elders thought.

“Reverent elders,” she greeted, hands planted on the desk. Her eyes found the king. “Your Majesty? A word?”

“How insolent!” One chimed angrily. “You strut in here disrespectfully and demand an audience with the king?”

“With the king, yes.” her gaze remained fixated on Leon who slightly shifted in his seat. “And it cannot wait.” She added.

Stillness first, then chatters followed. It was unheard of, an Omega making demands. It was impossible until Evyths broke the law.

"It is against our protocols, sire." Another elder picked up. "She cannot interfere in a room like this..." He added emphatically ad the others nodded.

“If the Goddess's Avatar demands an audience with me, I shall indeed grant her that.” Leon's voice gradually dropped.

Almost without complaints, the pack elders rose, seats pushed back, screeching the floor, their looks heavy with judgement and resentment.

The room emptied, leaving behind the smell of moist sand and two werewolves who wouldn't stand down.

Leon drew his fingers to his chin. “You are growing teeth. Sharp ones…”

“Not more than you have, your majesty…” Evyths sat by the right hand side, her eyes unblinking.

His brow arched. “How so?”

Impatiently, she said; “I am not here to… banter words with you, Leon…”

“Leon?” He cut in, scoffing. Shocked. “It is now ‘Leon’?”

Evyths held her silence. She shouldn't have addressed the king in such a mamner.

“My tongue slipped.” she corrected, calmer now but her eyes said otherwise. “I mean no disrespect but… you have crossed the thin line between balance and redemption,”

Leon furrowed.

“You do not have to tell me about the letter you received from Ravencroft but I can guess the content.” She stated, her words gnawing at him. “I can assure you, you have played with fire. Whenever it is you have traded with Lady Blackwin will ruin Davendale completely…”

“No, you dare not speak to me that way or challenge me,” Leon punched the table, a loud thud cutting through the impenetrable atmosphere. “

Evyths remained unmoved. She had witness worse from Valerio.

“Why? Are you scared?” She asked, watching the kings chest rise and fall. “Are you petrified that I know the truth? Your schemes? How you are endangering this kingdom?"

"Interesting. You've spent less than a year among wolves after living with vampires... and now you believe you've learned enough to judge a king?"

"I'm not judging the king, I'm asking questions no one wants to ask."

Leon paused then chuckled. Dry. His gaze pierced her before a knife ever could.. “I find your confidence disgusting, Evyths. Careful now.”

As Leon rose to leave the room, Evyths rose abruptly too. “What are your ties with Lady Blackwin..." there was a beat, the air stilled. "...and the hunter, Draco?”

With that, he stopped mid-step, turning to her slowly, his eyes widening.
