Chapter 95 Suspicious Adler
Chapter 95 Suspicious Adler
That did it for King Leon, he rose abruptly, both fists balling questionably.
An uncanny expression consumed his face, shooting Evyths a death stare like she didn't deserve to question his authority.
Evyths remained still, her countenance unshaken while she studied the restless king who tried to hide his emotion beneath a mask.
“You are not trying to interrogate my authority, are you?”
Evyths' shoulders squared. “Stop deflecting the question, your majesty.” She said, “We both know that the letter in your possession could either ruin Davendale or redeem it. I-I would certainly not assume it is the latter. No?”
Leon forced a smile, one that didn't match the tension hanging between them. The air was warmer than it had been early on.
Something about Evyths already irked him. Was it because she spoke the truth? Refused to tremble? What gave her the audacity to inquire about something very private like the letters arriving at Davendale?
Leon closed the distance between them, his brows drawn closely and sharply. “You and that bat will not detect to me how and when to rule my kingdom.” He declared behind gritted teeth and strutted out of the room.
The door slammed, the lingering smell of cedarwood trailing the corners of the room.
Evyths shook her head slowly, her thoughts reeling on top of the other.
She was right, the letter meant something. Davendale was indeed in bigger trouble.
It had been several hours since she had last spoken with the king. Evyths had been restless about the situation. Also certain that Valerio had been hiding something from her too and now Alpha King Leon although the latter was expected.
What was Valerio hiding? What was happening to Ravencroft? Was it war again? Was it the hunters and their hybrids?
A dozen thoughts racked her mind, exhausting her.
Evyths picked the book that she had been studying for some time. Since the last time that Adler had explained the prophecy, she had also wondered how exactly the goddess wanted her to guide her kingdom. Especially now that Leon was clearly uncut for an honest discussion or the secrets that he was keeping.
She gently flipped through the pages of the historical book, its pages unusually chiller than it used to be, as though it bore her witness.
Almost immediately, a knock interjected her thoughts. Closing the book, she rose from the carpet making her way to the door. Reaching for the door handle, she could already guess whom it was.
The door opened. A tall frame leaning against the door’s frame met her gaze. Of course it had to be Adler.
She didn't speak immediately, she took him in with her gaze, noticing his royal attire, she suspected it to be from abroad given the intricate details of rare stones and embellishments at the hem.
“Alpha Adler?!” She called skeptically.
Adler stared at her carefully, he had even caught the thin strap of her inner dress, her robe almost perfectly draped over it. And when he caught the strands of red hair framing her face, she cleared her throat.
He snapped back to reality, embarrassed. “I-I-I was speculating earlier. Could we talk?” His tone came out a little less edgier than she had expected given the look on his face.
His expression lacked its usual temerity and pride that it carried. He too could tell that whenever he was around Evyths, there was constantly a shift in not just the atmosphere, but also within him.
“I will be with you momentarily.” Evyths simply said, closing the door behind her.
However, she had been wondering why Adler had been looking intently at her. She gaped at herself, her robe had at least properly covered her up except that the small of her shoulder peeked effortlessly.
Evyths rolled her eyes, reaching for the chest of clothes.
Some minutes later, Evyths was walking with Adler, her red flowy dress sweeping the palace's marbled floor. While Adler spoke, she adjusted the short white cloak purposefully looking away from the onlookers.
“... certainly, there could have been something that must have terrified my father,”
Evyths drew her attention back to him, her steps poised and calculated. “You think? Nothing could frighten the king, no?”
Adler scoffed, his hands clasped behind him. That small gesture reminded her of Valerio whenever they discussed something pivotal.
She smiled to herself faintly like she could already picture his face.
“I know my father, I could swear to the goddess that something must have frightened him.” Adler led them through a less crowded hallway, the smell of fresh twigs and damp earth lingering in the atmosphere as they moved.
“Well, if you insist. But have you tried asking him? Perhaps your suspicion could be directed at something,” Evyths casually asked, her eyes darting to the drawings on either side of the hallway. She suspected that they were definitely portraits of past alpha kings of Davendale.
The same ardent ego cascading their appearances.
Adler halted his steps, pocketing his hands as his eyes fell fully on Evyths. Not knowingly, just suspiciously.
“If I may, what did you discuss with my father?”
Evyths crossed her arms loosely. “Why do I have the feeling that you are constantly prying whenever I speak with your father? Are you suspicious of something?” she breathed.
“No.” He cut in sharply. “In fact, I suspect something far greater.” He said. “I noticed how restless he's suddenly become after your private discussion. If at all, I am certain that your conversation did not go well…”
Evyths didn't speak immediately, her gaze shifted to the golden detail on the wall, a perfect horizontal line across. Then back to him.
“You suspect that I could… threaten the king?”
“Maybe.” He admitted, his posture still. He didn't try to pretend either.
“If you must know, there's apparently nothing. I only asked basic questions, nothing far from the usual.” Evyths' lips pursed. “If I am to guide Davendale, I should know its state, right? I know very well that your father is keeping secrets….”
Adler’s eyes narrowed. “Now is he?”
She wryly smiled, straightening her dress briefly. “You, Alpha Adler, shall not hear a word from me.” she murmured calmly. “If you demand answers, you know where to find them.”
Adler said nothing, the rest of his words clogging in his throat.
How could he have assumed that Evyths would say a word to him anyway, he thought silently.
He forced a smile too, picking up his steps as they continued walking until they reached the last door on the right of the serene hallway.
Both stopped.
Evyths' gaze searched both corners before asking. “What is this place, Adler?”
“I would like you to meet Luna, my mother.” He simply replied, his gaze softer now.
