Chapter 937 Chapter 937
Marie stood there, torn between checking on Cassius or Webb. Her heart felt like it was in her throat, and each beat made breathing hard.
“He’s good.”
She looked to see Blair helping Cassius sit up.
“Shaelan will have to confirm that.” Blair glanced at Amari. “I’m no doctor, but he’s moving.”
Marie turned to look at Webb. He stood there, his back to everyone, looking down at Kiloh. He was still in cat form. He was covered in scars. She held her breath as she stared at him, looking for signs that he was breathing.
“What did you do?” Amari went rushing by Marie toward Webb. She carried the rifle over he shoulder.
Pasha emerged from the trees. She was wearing a shirt and pants but no footwear. A gun was in her hand. She hurried over to Kiloh and squatted beside him.
“Are you all right?”
Marie dragged her eyes from Kiloh and looked to see Webb had turned, his gaze locked on her. She nodded, unable to speak.
“He’s done.” Pasha stood up and looked around at everyone. When she paused on Webb, she could see the look of indecision on her face.
Webb started to walk toward Marie when Tripp stepped in front of him, the rifle aimed at his chest. “Slow your roll, big guy.”
Webb’s eyes widened when he looked at his weapon.
Amari lunged and knocked the rifle, so it wasn’t aimed at him. “What are you doing?” She looked over her shoulder at Webb. “Do not aim that gun at Care Bear.”
“Darlin, he…”
She held up a hand, and Tripp stopped speaking. “I don’t care if he just snapped ten necks. You do not aim a gun at him.” She lifted the rifle from her shoulder. “No one does.” She moved just her eyes and looked at the others there.
Tripp made a low growl and looked over at Pasha. “Feel free to do your job here.”
Pasha straightened and stood taller. She looked from Kiloh to Webb and then at Cassius.
Webb moved around Amari, making her scramble to match his direction so she could still cover him. He held Marie’s gaze as he walked, and her heart was in her throat again.
“We was going to kill Cassius,” Blair said quietly.
Calder came running toward them. He slid to a stop and then looked around. He looked at Amari for a moment and then turned to Pasha. “Calum and Wynter have tracked Pike and Clayton. I'm going to help.”
Pasha looked down at Kiloh. “Try not to kill them.”
Calder opened his mouth and then looked at Kiloh. “Okay. I’ll leave you to sort out whatever this is.” He waved his hand toward the dead jaguar and then jogged in the direction he’d come from.
Webb stopped in front of Marie and touched her cheek. “You don’t have to worry about him again.”
His touch was so gentle, she struggled to understand how that hand had just wrestled with a full-size jaguar shifter and won. Then she noticed the blood on his arm. She moved his hand and turned his arm. “You’re bleeding.” She stepped to look at his shoulder. Long, deep scratches went down the back of his arm and shoulder. She looked at Amari. “I need something to slow the bleeding.”
Amari looked at Webb’s arm and then lowered the rifle and pulled the walkie out of her pocket. “I need a med kit. Now.”
Pasha came over and looked at the gouges. Her expression clearly showed that she realized Webb had wrestled with Kiloh, claws and teeth included. “I don’t know what I should…”
“He was going to kill Cassius,” Blair said again.
Webb growled low as he exhaled, making it reverberate and sound louder than he intended. “He did this.” He moved Marie’s hair and pushed the collar of her jacket down, revealing the mark on her neck. “Without her consent.” He dropped his hand away and looked at Pasha. “He was on his was her to finish the job because Rhogue stopped him from embedding his scent in her the first time.”
Pasha looked at her. “Is this true?”
Marie nodded.
Pasha cursed softly and looked around.” He was going to kill you—” she pointed to Cassius. “But you killed him.” She turned back to Webb. “Snapped his very sturdy neck with your hands.” She shook her head and looked at Marie. “But you were marked without consent.” She blew out a breath. “Amari, lower the damn gun. No one is shooting anyone here.” She paused and looked at Noah, who was a statue between the trees. His eyes were scanning the area. “Shit. I have to talk to Raymond and the King.” She hissed out a breath and looked at Webb. “Go inside. I’ll come find you when someone tells me how to unravel this.” She gave Tripp a side eye; he shrugged and gave her a lopsided grin.
Marie put her hand on Webb’s chest, needing to feel him close. Both Cassius and he could have died. Some part of her wanted to kill something, and she honestly didn’t know if it was her or the animal hidden inside her.
Noah moved over to help Blair get Cassius to his feet. He was moving slow, making her wonder if Kiloh had been close to causing an injury that wouldn’t have healed.
“Come on, Care Bear.” Amari stepped back and checked the area.
Marie looked to see Webb looking down at her. “I’m okay.” She whispered. “Just surprised at the outcome.” She dropped her hand and stepped back, and then held the other one out to him. “You need to get that cleaned and get dressed before you catch a chill.”
Blaise came jogging out of the trees. She stopped and looked around. “Devin wants them back now.” She nodded to Pasha. “Let’s get that body out of here. I’ll get someone on that.” She went over and looked at Webb’s shoulder. “Shaelan is waiting for you and Cassius.” She didn’t pause to look at Kiloh. “Tripp, Amari, grab some tranq guns and get to Calum and Wynter. Two or four legs, I don’t care, you see Pike or Clayton, you knock them out. We’re clearing Grifter out of the cage. He can stay in the interview room.” Turning slowly, she looked at Webb. “Come on. You need to get back.”
