Chapter 631 Chapter 631
“How’s that angle?”
Asher jerked his eyes back to the screen and saw Illias on it. He put the walkie closer to his mouth. “I can see your face.”
“You lucky dog.” Illias grinned and then moved out of the camera’s way.
Asher leaned down and looked at the screen. It was a clear view of the fence line at the side of the factory. “That’s good there.”
“Okay. Six more to go.”
Asher sat down and looked at the screen that was split to show the cafeteria from two cameras. Raymond, Calum, Devin, and a few others were going over maps on one of the tables, but that wasn’t what held his attention.
On the other side of the room was Journee sitting alone. She had the tablet and was looking at pictures of those listed with the Alliance. Asher wasn’t sure if that was just staff or all clans. He shook his head, all clans would be endless. She looked so alone sitting there.
“I’m tagging Nate to set up cameras outside the fences.”
Asher looked at the walkie and then lifted it to his mouth. “There are cameras outside the fence?”
“Not yet. That’s why the rogues are there.”
Asher couldn’t stop looking at her. “Is there a need for cameras then?” She glanced over at the others, and he looked to see if they were doing something to draw her attention. They were just laughing.
“I don’t know. I guess that’s up to Raymond and Nate.”
He looked at the walkie. It didn’t register what he said. “What?” He rechecked the screen.
“If we put cameras outside the fence.”
“Right.” He had no idea what they were talking about now. Rayne was at the table with Journee now. She sat down. He wished for a second that there was sound to go with the picture, but was also glad there wasn’t, so conversations were private. He wasn’t even sure why there were cameras in the cafeteria unless it was to look for people when they were needed.
“Okay. Give me a second to move this one.”
“Yup.” He was focusing on Rayne talking to Journee and checking her reactions to whatever was being said. With it being the princess, he didn’t have to worry about it being insensitive or anything he would have to deal with.
She stood up, and he leaned down closer to see if Journee was going to go with her. If she did leave that space, he wouldn’t be able to watch her. He scowled at the screen. He was turning into a stalker or something.
He watched Rayne leave the frame and then stop where the men were. His gaze flicked back to Journee, she was wiping her eyes. He stiffened. Was she crying? He turned for the door.
“How’s this.”
Stopping, he cursed in his head and turned back to the screens. He quickly found the one Illias referred to and leaned down to check the view. “It’s good.”
“Great. Five more to go.”
Sitting in the chair, he wheeled it closer to the screens and studied Journee. She didn’t seem like she was crying. Maybe she’d bumped her leg, and it brought tears to her eyes. He frowned. He hoped not. He didn’t want her in more pain.
Leaning back, he blew out a breath. This was bad. The way he had to see her or know where she was all the time was beginning to drive him crazy. He thought about all the mate ‘tips’ that Jesse and others had tossed at him in the last few days, and he was starting to think it was as bad as they’d made it sound. How in hell was he going to drive across the continent with her if he was this obsessed with her? He snorted. At least she’d be in sight at all times in the passenger seat. Which, he realized, was also a big problem.
“You’re not big on talking, are you?”
He looked at the walkie and shrugged before answering. “Nope.”
“Great, I get to work with the silent one.”
Asher rechecked the cafeteria cameras. “I could go get Webb to help instead.”
“No.” Illias said quite loudly, “he hums all the time.”
Asher grinned. “Not always; sometimes, he whistles instead.”
“I’m good with the silence. Hang on while I adjust this one and plug it in.”
Asher looked at the screen that was blank and then at Journee. She was still looking through the pictures. He rubbed his hand over his chest, he should go rescue her and get her to help pack the car. He frowned. He didn’t even know what kind of vehicle he was getting. Hopefully, it was roomy enough that they wouldn’t be on top of each other for the next few weeks. He closed his eyes. Wrong thing to think, stupid.
