Chapter 16: The Net Closes

Chapter 16: The Net Closes

Amelia stood in front of the table, fingers splayed across the wooden surface, as if she needed to feel something solid, real, amid the chaos. Carlos’s message was still open on her phone: “Private flight. Thursday. 5:00 a.m. Guatemala. If he boards, he won’t come back.”

She didn’t need more details. She knew what it meant. Diego, as always, was running. Just like every time his lies began to crumble. Just like when she, her voice breaking, begged him for answers at the country house. Just like after the divorce, when he left her with nothing, vanishing like a ghost that still clutched her throat.

But not this time. This time, he wouldn’t escape.

—We have to stop him —Laura said, her face serious, phone in one hand and the other on her waist—. If he leaves, we lose him. You know that.

—I know —Amelia replied—. But I’m not going to chase after him like this is some personal hunt. I’m not the desperate ex-wife. I won’t give him that power.

Laura pressed her lips together, frustrated.

—So what, we let him get on that damn plane?

Amelia shook her head.

—We’re going to leak the escape attempt. Big time. So the entire country sees it. So they know before he even reaches the hangar. If the justice system won’t react out of fear or corruption, public pressure will force them to.

Carlos carried out the order quickly. In less than an hour, Sofía Torres published an exclusive in her outlet:

“Diego Morales' Last Move: Attempts to Leave the Country on Private Jet Amid Active Investigation. Prosecutor’s Office Remains Silent.”

The news spread like wildfire.

Social media exploded. Thousands of users demanded immediate action. The hashtag #DiegoNoSeVa ("Diego Isn’t Leaving") trended nationally. News outlets interrupted their scheduled programming. Politicians, journalists, even celebrities began sharing the story.

And at 2:00 a.m., the prosecutor’s office finally issued an official statement: they would begin a verification operation regarding businessman Diego Morales’s attempt to leave the country amid ongoing investigations.

It wasn’t an arrest warrant. But it was a start.

Amelia didn’t sleep. She stayed with Laura and Carlos, monitoring movements at the airport. The security cameras—Carlos had limited access—showed blurry images, but they were enough. A black car. A man with a suitcase. Shadows moving in haste. Him.

—He’s there —Carlos said—. At 4:50, he’ll try to board.

Amelia took a deep breath. She wasn’t shaking. She wasn’t shouting. She was calmer than ever.

—They won’t let him.

And they didn’t.

At 4:54 a.m., two DIJIN agents approached the plane. They didn’t come with guns. They didn’t come to arrest him. They simply asked to verify documents, confirm identity, check for legal restrictions.

But it was enough.

The pilot refused to take off without proper authorization. The flight was grounded. Diego was forced to disembark, escorted, not in handcuffs—but with his dignity in shreds.

The photos leaked minutes later.

Diego exiting the private terminal, his face hidden under a cap, his steps hurried, flanked by agents. No cuffs—but completely exposed. Humiliated.

Amelia saw them on her laptop. Laura, sitting next to her, exhaled slowly, like her whole body finally relaxed.

—He couldn’t leave.

—No. Because now the country is watching —Amelia said—. Because this time, he couldn’t hide.

Carlos joined the video call, wearing a faint smile.

—The system is slow, but under pressure, it reacts. Now, we need to make sure this doesn't end with just a flight suspension. We need a travel ban. Otherwise, he’ll try again.

Amelia nodded.

—And we’ll get it. Today.

They spent the morning with the lawyer, drafting a formal request. They had evidence: the attempted escape, offshore accounts, previous statements, and now, the backing of public opinion. The pressure was too great to ignore.

At noon, the prosecutor’s office issued the travel ban: Diego Morales could not leave the country while investigations were ongoing.

Amelia read it twice, unblinking. Then she placed the phone on the table and went still.

—Are you okay? —Laura asked.

—I don’t know what justice feels like. But this… feels close.

That afternoon, TV stations began to speak differently. No more talk of “alleged links” or “possible irregularities.” Now the words were clear: corruption, attempted escape, financial manipulation. Diego’s image—once protected—began to crumble under public scrutiny.

But Amelia wasn’t done.

Carlos delivered new information: an employee from Inversiones Cordillera was ready to talk. A young man named Elías, hired as an accounting technician, later forced to help falsify financial records.

—He’s ready to testify —Carlos said—. But he’s scared. He wants protection.

Amelia didn’t hesitate.

—Give it to him. Protect him. If he wants to speak, we’ll listen.

That same night, Elías met with Laura and the lawyer at a quiet café. He told them everything: how they created fake invoices, used dead people’s names, funneled funds through shell companies. He even had email copies, screenshots of chats, recorded phone calls.

It was enough for a trial.

When Amelia heard the audio clips, she froze.

In one of them, Diego clearly said: “She doesn’t know anything. She just signed. As always. Let her deny it, we’ll crush her anyway.”

Laura looked up, outraged.

—Do you want to release it?

Amelia thought for a moment.

—No. I’ll save it for court. Let his voice bury him where it hurts most: in the courtroom.

But she did post a message that night. Brief. Sharp.

“The truth is coming out. And this time, it won’t stop.”

And it didn’t.

In the next 48 hours, three of Diego’s former associates were summoned to testify. Two cooperated. One tried to flee. He was caught at the border.

Rodrigo Méndez, for his part, denied all involvement. He issued a statement saying he didn’t know Diego “beyond social events.” Amelia read it with a bitter smile.

—Right. Social events where they handed out millions.

But this wasn’t about Rodrigo anymore. He would come next. For now, the important thing was that Diego had been dragged out of the shadows. And the country now saw him for what he truly was: a powerful man cornered by his own lies.

That night, Amelia slept for the first time in weeks.

And she dreamed of silence.

Of the peace that comes from knowing the net was finally starting to close.
