Chapter 78- Possessive Over Her
Derrick’s POV
A curse leaves my lips the moment my eyes land on Salara’s horrified face. I wasn’t expecting her to join me in my office, something that I would normally be ecstatic about, but in this situation I would have rathered that she stayed in our suite.
“I can’t stay here.” Salara murmurs before she turns to walk back out of my office door. I jump from my seat quickly, reaching the door before she is able to take a step outside. She turns her tear-filled eyes in my direction, a pleading look written on her face. “Please.” She whispers out, leaving me unsure just what she is pleading with me for.
I reach out to grab hold of her, thankful that she doesn’t fight me when I pull her in close to my chest. Her arms reach up to wrap around my waist, a heartbreaking sob escaping from her lips. “I don’t want to be responsible for more lives lost.”
Deep down I can understand the pain that she is feeling at this moment, and even her desire to take the danger away with her, but the selfish part of me where Hunter’s instincts reside is preventing me from allowing her to go away from me. I have waited far too long to have her by my side, and I will be damned if I let some prophecy chase her away.
“You’re leaving will do us no good, my dear.” Elder Winifred speaks up, causing Salara to look up from my chest and over in her direction. “Our Alpha will be lost without you and it will leave us vulnerable to attacks.” Salara’s silvery/green eyes meet mine, looking for confirmation for the words that Elder Winifred just shared.
I nod my head in agreement, watching as Salara’s eyes widen slightly. “I love you more than anything.” I whisper down for her ears only, watching as the same feelings float across her face.
She reaches up to dry her eyes before turning her attention back to where the pack Elders and Beta Charles sits staring at us quietly. “Then what can I do to stop more blood shed from happening?”
Wrapping my arm around Salara’s shoulder, I lead her over to the seat I usually take during such meetings and encourage her to take my place. A few of the elders raise their brows in surprise at my action, but say nothing as they watch me place my mate lovingly in my seat. There has to be something we can do to keep her out of the ancient Alpha’s clutches.
Once Salara is settled in her seat with me standing by her side, Elder Winifred casts her a pitying look that speaks volumes. “There is nothing we can do to prevent more blood shed.” She lets out a tired sigh, looking more like the old woman I know her to be than any time before. “The packs will not listen to reason if it is you that they are after.”
“And the Alpha?” Her question comes out in a whisper, but still clear enough that every werewolf present was able to hear her words. A touch of longing can be heard in her words, either coming from her or her wolf. The sound of it pricks at the possessiveness that I feel as an Alpha, resulting in Hunter pacing once again in my mind.
Hunter has never reacted so feral in all of the years that we have been together and I find myself beginning to worry about his mental state. Once a wolf becomes feral, they then take over the host and the human side is gone forever, leaving nothing but a broken wolf in its place. It is not something that I would wish on anyone.
Elder Winifred lets out another sigh. “For all we know, the Alpha already knows that you have survived the bite and could be on his way as we speak.” She pauses to look at me hesitantly before she continues on. “If the Alpha shows up, it would be best that you spoke to him-”
Hunter surges forward, taking control of my body as he bellows out a ferocious growl that startles all in the room. My Beta and the Elders all turn their heads in submission, while Salara glances over her shoulder in question over my outburst. The fact that she didn’t even flinch when my Alpha aura leaked out unintentionally reaffirms that she is the perfect mate for me.
Hunter calms down slightly, giving me back control, but still hanging at the surface in case someone else suggests that we allow our Luna to leave. Elder Winifred glances in my direction, the look on her face not encouraging me much.
“I am not saying that you should allow her to go with the Alpha.” She explains, giving me a disapproving look when another growl tumbles from my lips thanks to my pissed off wolf. “But it would be in everyone’s best interest if she at least spoke with him.”
I put my hand up in the air before she can continue to tell me such things, not willing to even think about her husband getting anywhere near her again. The thought alone puts Hunter into a murderous rage and if it wasn’t for Salara reaching over to offer her touch, we definitely would have exploded once again.
Her touch and the soothing vibes coming through our mate bond is the only thing that is keeping us together and I am forever thankful to have her by my side. Salara leans her head against my side and I reach up automatically to run my fingers through her hair.
“Is there any way that we can hide the fact that I am still alive from him?” Salara asks, making my heart melt with how easily she is willing to stand by my side and stay away from the ancient Alpha. My heart swells in my chest, a touch of guilt moving through me from keeping her away from a wolf that is fated to her.
Elder Winifred casts me another disapproving look before turning her attention to Salara to answer her question. “If the past has taught me anything, the Alpha will not regain his full powers until the next full moon that is in a few days.”
“Why is that?” Salara moves her body away from me, leaning forward to give Elder Winifred her full attention. The subtle excitement that she tries to hide over the topic of the Alpha is not lost on me and it takes a lot for me to keep Hunter from acting out once again.
“The Alpha is cursed to relive his past deeds over and over again, as part of his punishment he is weakened in an attempt to give him time to change before he regains his full powers. From what I know, it has never helped him in the past lives you have lived.”
Hearing about Salara having past lives with the wolf that is trying to steal her from me drags up more possessiveness in me that I battle to tamper down. Salara reaches out her hand without thinking, rubbing along my arm nearest to her without breaking her gaze from Elder Winifred.
“What happened to start it all?” A frown furrows her brows in the cutest of ways, drawing my attention away from the conversation momentarily and making me miss whatever Elder Winifred said in response. Whatever it was though, it didn’t appease Salara’s curiosity. She leans back in her seat, a thoughtful look taking over her features.
“If every life has ended in tragedy-” Salara hesitates over the word tragedy, leading me to believe that she knows something that she hasn’t shared with me. Something I will have to question her about when we are alone. “Why does he keep searching for me?”
That question catches Elder Winifred by surprise. “Because he can not help but search for you with every life that he lives.” Her matter of fact voice reminds me of the fact that wolves are nothing without their mates. Most wolves search their lives for the one the Goddess has made for them and the loss of a mate can have devastating effects on those left behind.
She is right in saying that he wouldn’t be able to help himself from searching for her in every lifetime that he lives. I know I would spend a thousand lifetimes following Salara if that is what it took for us to finally live happily together.
But that still doesn’t mean that I am going to hand her over to him without a fight. I will burn down the Earth to keep her by my side.
