Chapter 157

Chapter 157
Calla

Blake stared at the spreading puddle of ruined chemicals, his face twisted with horror. For several seconds, he stood frozen, watching months of research dissolve into toxic steam.

Then he smiled.

The expression sent ice through my veins. This wasn't the desperate panic I expected from someone who'd just lost everything. This was the look of a man who still had cards to play.

Blake reached behind him and pulled out two vials from a hidden compartment. One glowed with the same blue-green light as the destroyed compounds. The other was filled with dark red liquid that I recognized with growing dread.

My blood. The samples he'd taken earlier.

"Did you really think I kept all my research in one place?" Blake asked, his voice carrying that political smugness I remembered from our marriage. "I'm not that stupid."

Dante tried to push himself upright from where he lay beside Raven's corpse, but his body was failing him. Blood continued to pour from his nose, and his skin had taken on a grayish pallor that made him look half-dead already.

"You bastard," Dante wheezed. "Lord Virex will tear you apart when he arrives."

Blake's smile widened as he walked to a piece of equipment I hadn't noticed before. Some kind of mixing device with tubes and chambers that looked like it belonged in a chemistry lab.

"Virex won't get here in time," Blake said, connecting the vials to the machine. "And honestly? I'm willing to risk everything now. If he kills me for this, then that's my fate."

He pressed a button, and the machine hummed to life. The two liquids began flowing through clear tubes, mixing together in ways that made my stomach turn. The blue-green compound swirled with my dark blood, creating something new that pulsed with its own sick light.

"What are you doing?" I whispered, though part of me already knew.

Blake watched the mixture with fascination, his hybrid features sharp with anticipation. "Creating the ultimate combination. Vampire strength from my transformation, but with fewer weaknesses since I'm hybrid. Feral werewolf power from the compounds I developed using your mate and Marcus Kane's biology. And Moonkeeper abilities from your blood - psychic powers, dreamwalking, all of it."

The suspended cartel members watched in growing horror as they realized what Blake was planning.

"You're insane," Michael said, his voice rough from whatever they'd done to him during captivity. "That mixture will kill you."

"Maybe," Blake agreed, removing the completed compound from the machine. The liquid inside the syringe moved wrong, like it was alive and angry about being contained. "But if it works, I'll be the most powerful being on the planet. Strong enough to rule both worlds."

Then he turned his attention to the room's human guards. There were six of them, all armed, all looking increasingly nervous as they watched their boss prepare to inject himself with something that looked like liquid insanity.

Blake's eyes flashed red as his hybrid nature took control.

He moved like lightning.

The first guard didn't even have time to draw his weapon before Blake's enhanced strength snapped his neck. The second managed to get his gun halfway up before Blake drove clawed fingers through his chest, tearing his heart out.

I screamed as blood splattered across the laboratory walls. This wasn't the cold politician I'd been married to. This was something monstrous wearing his face.

The remaining guards opened fire, but Blake moved too fast for human eyes to track. Bullets tore through empty air as he danced between them, his hybrid abilities letting him tear through trained soldiers like they were made of paper.

In less than thirty seconds, six men were dead.

Blake stood in the center of the carnage, breathing hard but barely wounded. His pale skin was splattered with blood, and his red eyes gleamed with satisfaction at the destruction he'd caused.

He looked like a demon.

When he turned back to me, there was nothing human left in his expression. The political mask had been completely stripped away, revealing the monster underneath.

"Much better," he said, his voice carrying undertones that made my bones ache. "I was getting tired of pretending to be civilized."

Blake walked back to his equipment, stepping over corpses without even looking down. He picked up the syringe filled with that horrible mixture - vampire, werewolf, and Moonkeeper abilities all combined into one toxic brew.

Across the room, Dante managed to prop himself up against Raven's body, though the effort clearly cost him. His face was gray with approaching death, but his eyes still held malicious intelligence.

"Lord Virex felt the Moonkeeper awakening," Dante said, blood running from the corner of his mouth. "He's already on his way with an army. You've got maybe ten minutes before this place is swarming with vampires who make me look like a child."

Blake held the syringe up to the light, watching the mixture swirl inside the glass. "Ten minutes is more than enough."

He plunged the needle into his arm and emptied the entire contents into his bloodstream.

Blake immediately collapsed to the ground, his body convulsing violently as three different supernatural bloodlines tried to merge inside him. His back arched, and he screamed as his bones began reshaping themselves. The sound was inhuman, like metal being torn apart.

Dark veins spread under his skin in chaotic patterns that pulsed and writhed. His muscles spasmed uncontrollably as his body fought to accommodate the conflicting supernatural DNA.

"He's going to die," Vera said, watching Blake's convulsions with morbid fascination. "No human body can handle that much foreign DNA."

Blood poured from Blake's eyes and nose as his body twitched and seized on the laboratory floor. The transformation was tearing him apart from the inside out.

Dante saw his chance. Using his last reserves of strength, he dragged himself across the blood-slicked floor toward Blake's convulsing form. His vampire claws extended, ready to finish what the poisoning had started.

"Should have killed me first," Dante wheezed, raising his claws to strike.

But even unconscious and convulsing, Blake's hybrid reflexes kicked in. His hand shot out and caught Dante's wrist with crushing force. With a sickening crack, he snapped the vampire's arm like a twig.

Dante screamed and fell backward, his broken arm hanging at an impossible angle.

Blake's eyes snapped open, though they were unfocused and wild. He struggled to his feet, his body still twitching at intervals as the transformation fought to complete itself.

"Should have... stayed down," Blake gasped, stumbling toward a control panel near the door.

His movements were unsteady, like someone learning to walk again. But there was terrible purpose in his actions as he slammed his fist against a red button.

Alarms began blaring throughout the facility. Red lights flashed as metal shutters slammed down over windows and exits. A countdown appeared on screens throughout the room: 1:00 and falling.

"What are you doing?" I screamed.

Blake turned toward me, his face a mask of blood and pain. "Insurance," he gasped. "If I can't... control the power... no one gets it."

The suspended cartel members erupted in curses and struggles against their restraints.

"You psychotic bastard!" Lucian screamed. "We're all going to die!"

Marcus Kane suddenly jerked awake in his harness, confusion clouding his pale eyes as he took in the chaos around him. Blood still dripped from the tubes that had been draining him for days.

"What... what's happening?" Marcus mumbled, his voice weak from blood loss.

"The facility's going to blow!" Vera shouted at him. "Blake's lost his mind!"

Blake stumbled toward the exit, his body still wracked with occasional spasms. The transformation had left him barely conscious, running purely on instinct now.

I tried desperately to reach for my newfound abilities, to project my consciousness like I had before, but I was still weak from Raven's blood magic. The binding breaking had drained me completely.

The countdown continued: 0:45... 0:44... 0:43...

Blake stumbled out of the laboratory, leaving us all to die in the explosion while he escaped with whatever twisted plans his barely conscious mind could still form.

My heart hammered as I watched the numbers fall. I was chained to the medical bed, exhausted and helpless. The cartel members were suspended and couldn't break free. Marcus Kane was barely conscious from blood loss. Even Dante was dying from Blake's poison.

0:30... 0:29... 0:28...

I closed my eyes and tried one last time to reach through the mate bond, to touch Axel's mind across the distance between us.

Please, I thought desperately. Please find me.

0:15... 0:14... 0:13...

"No," Marcus Kane gasped from his restraints, his pale eyes wide with horror as he understood what was happening. "Not like this."

10... 9... 8...

Tears streamed down my face as I prepared to die. This couldn't be how it ended. Not after everything we'd been through.

7... 6... 5...

The air in the room suddenly shifted. A presence filled the space - ancient, powerful, and completely unfamiliar. The temperature seemed to drop several degrees.

4... 3... 2...

A shadow moved beside me, too fast for my eyes to follow. I felt cold fingers brush against my restraints, and the metal chains holding me to the bed suddenly snapped like they were made of paper.

1...

Strong arms lifted me from the medical bed just as the counter hit zero.

BOOM!
