Chapter 153
Chapter 153
Calla
I stared at Raven with pure shock as the truth hit me like ice water. They wanted to free the binding on my wolf - but she had no idea what I really was. She really thought I was just some ordinary werewolf whose transformation had been blocked by trauma or maybe something as simple as simple magic.
Blake and Dante were using her expertise while keeping her completely in the dark about my true heritage. Just like they'd used everyone else.
Raven stepped back from the bed, studying the blood symbols she'd drawn across my exposed skin. Her completely red eyes held satisfaction as she prepared for the next phase.
"This should break whatever simple binding is blocking your wolf," she said, rolling her shoulders. "Most trauma-based suppressions respond well to blood magic."
"Raven, you don't understand what you're doing," I whispered, terror flooding through me.
She laughed harshly. "I understand perfectly. Your husband wants to see your wolf form, probably to torture you in new and creative ways. Blake is a twisted fool who always did enjoy breaking pretty things."
Her hands began moving in complex patterns, words spilling from her lips in a language that made my teeth ache. The blood symbols on my skin started to glow with faint red light, and immediately I felt heat spreading through my body.
The binding that had held my wolf form prisoner for years began to tremble.
"Wait," I gasped, panic spiking through my voice. "You need to stop. You don't know what I am."
But Raven was already deep in her incantation, crimson energy flowing from her fingertips into the symbols she'd painted. The heat in my veins turned to fire as ancient magic collided with the protection my ancestors had woven into my bloodline.
Then the pain started.
It began as a dull ache in my bones, like the flu, but quickly escalated into something far worse. My skeleton felt like it was being rewritten from the inside out. Every nerve ending screamed as the binding fought against Raven's blood magic.
"Oh god," I whimpered, my back arching against the restraints. "Stop, please stop."
Raven's eyes widened as she felt the resistance her magic was encountering. This wasn't the simple trauma-based suppression she'd expected. This was something far older and more complex.
"What the hell?" she gasped mid-incantation, but she couldn't stop now. The magic had its own momentum. "What kind of binding is this?"
She cursed viciously but kept the incantation going, sweat beading on her forehead as she poured more power into breaking whatever was protecting my wolf. The blood symbols burned brighter, and my pain doubled.
My bones began to shift.
The sensation was nothing like the gentle stretching I'd felt during my partial transformations. This was violent and wrong, like someone was breaking every bone in my body and reassembling me into something new. I could feel my ribcage expanding, my spine lengthening, my skull reshaping itself.
"Please," I sobbed, tears streaming down my face. "It hurts too much."
But Raven couldn't hear me over her own shock. Her incantation wavered as she realized this wasn't ordinary werewolf magic she was dealing with.
"What the fuck are you?" she whispered, blood beginning to drip from her nose as the strain of breaking my binding pushed her abilities to their limit.
I screamed as the familiar wall appeared in my mind - the barrier that had always stopped my transformations before. But this time, with Raven's blood magic tearing at it, the wall was cracking.
For the first time in my life, I could feel what lay beyond it.
Power. An absolutely terrifying power.
"I can't... I can't stop it," Raven gasped, her own body shaking from the magical backlash. "Whatever the fuck you are, the binding is fighting back."
The pain reached a crescendo that nearly drove me unconscious. My bones felt like they were on fire, my muscles tearing and rebuilding themselves. But beneath the agony, something else was stirring. Something that had been sleeping for generations.
With a sound like breaking glass, the wall in my mind finally shattered.
Power exploded outward from my body in a wave that lit up the entire laboratory. Silver light poured from my skin, brighter than sunlight, carrying an energy that made every vampire in the building recoil instinctively.
Raven screamed as the magical feedback tore through her body. Blood exploded from her eyes, streaming down her face like crimson tears. More blood poured from her nose, her ears, even her mouth as the ancient binding's destruction ravaged her system.
She'd been magically connected to my bloodline when it shattered, and the backlash was destroying her from the inside out.
"Moonkeeper!" she shrieked, her voice breaking as blood filled her throat. She stumbled backward, her legs giving out as internal hemorrhaging spread through her organs. "She was a fucking moonkeeper!!!"
I watched in horror as her body convulsed violently. The blood-red tattoos covering her skin began to crack and bleed, the stolen life force she'd accumulated over years turning toxic. Her completely red eyes rolled back, showing only whites shot through with burst vessels.
"Can't... stop it," she gasped, collapsing to her knees. Blood was coming from everywhere now - her pores, under her fingernails, even from the corners of her mouth. The magical backlash was liquefying her from within.
Blake cursed and stepped back as Raven's body seized one final time. She tried to reach toward me, her hand shaking violently, before she pitched forward and went still.
The feared blood mage was dead, killed by the very power she'd tried to manipulate.
Then the wave of my awakened power spread beyond the laboratory, racing outward like wildfire through the supernatural world.
I felt my consciousness pulled along with it, my awareness suddenly expanding far beyond my physical body. The sensation was overwhelming - like suddenly being able to see in every direction at once.
In the laboratory below me, I could see my own body lying unconscious on the medical bed, half-naked and glowing with silver light.
Blake was cursing violently, his hybrid features twisted with fury. "This wasn't supposed to happen yet! Everyone will know what she is now!"
Dante stood beside him with a calculating expression, his mind already working through the implications. "Lord Virex probably felt that," he said quietly. "Every vampire in a hundred-mile radius felt that."
My omnipresent awareness shifted, following the path my power had taken. Somewhere in the darkness, I sensed that familiar vampire whose face I'd never been able to see clearly.
He was standing frozen in what looked like an elegant office, his body rigid with shock.
"A dreamwalker?" he whispered to himself, his voice carrying genuine amazement rather than fear. "Could it be... Blake's dismissed ex-wife? A moonkeeper... after all these centuries."
The wave continued spreading, touching the minds of supernatural beings across the region. Most vampires responded with shock and recognition, many crying out "Moonkeeper!". They knew what that word meant. They knew what I represented.
The werewolves' reactions were more mixed. Most felt the power surge but didn't understand its significance. Only older pack leaders seemed to recognize what they were sensing, their voices carrying wonder and disbelief.
"Impossible," one elderly Alpha whispered from somewhere far away. "The bloodline was thought extinct."
But there was one mind I sought above all others. Following the mate bond that connected us even across impossible distances, my awareness found Axel.
He was standing in what looked like a safe house, his body going rigid as my power washed over him. The mate bond let him feel exactly what I was experiencing - the pain, the terror, the overwhelming surge of awakened abilities.
"Calla," he whispered, his face twisting with anguish. His gray eyes blazed with fury and helpless rage as he realized what was happening to me.
For a moment, our consciousness touched across the distance. I felt his desperate love, his frantic need to reach me, his absolute determination to tear apart anyone who had hurt me.
Then suddenly, he froze. His head turned slowly, gray eyes searching the empty air where I stood.
"Calla?" he whispered, his voice breaking with desperate hope. "Is that you?"
