Chapter forty three

The air was thick with tension as the pack split into two groups at dawn.

Lucian stood at the front, his sharp blue eyes scanning the warriors who had gathered. The entire pack had assembled for this moment—the final hunt, the mission that would determine whether they had a future at all.

“This is it,” Lucian said, voice firm. “Orion is no longer waiting for us to make a mistake. He’s already preparing his final move. We either find him first, or we lose everything.”

A heavy silence followed, every wolf present knowing what was at stake.

Lucian turned toward the warriors staying behind. “You hold the line here. Protect the territory. If Orion tries to strike while we’re gone, you don’t let them in.”

A chorus of growls and nods rippled through the group.

Then, Lucian turned to the strike team.

Kai stood beside him, heart pounding, fingers clenched into fists. Beside him were Kieran, Rhett, Anna, and Mira—the ones who would go into enemy territory to end this war before Orion could take another step.

Lucian’s gaze swept over them. “We move fast. We stay low. No unnecessary fights. We find him, we take him down, and we get out. No hesitation.”

Everyone nodded, their faces grim with determination.

Anna exhaled sharply, shifting her weight as she clutched her wrist, where Orion’s mark still burned against her skin. “I can feel him. He’s… waiting.”

Kai stiffened. “How far?”

Anna’s eyes glowed faintly as she closed them, breathing deeply. “North,” she murmured. “Farther than we thought. He’s deeper into the rogue lands.”

Lucian nodded. “Then we move.”

Without another word, the group disappeared into the trees.

They traveled swiftly, slipping between the towering trees like shadows. Every step took them deeper into the rogue territories, where the air felt wrong, thick with something unseen, something ancient.

Kai’s instincts screamed at him with every passing mile. Orion wasn’t just hiding. He was waiting.

And the closer they got, the more Kai could feel him.

At first, it was subtle—a whisper at the back of his mind, a faint pressure that felt almost like a distant memory. But then, as the hours stretched, it became clearer.

A presence.

Not beside him.

Not around him.

Inside him.

Kai staggered slightly, his breath catching in his throat.

Kieran was immediately at his side, gripping his arm. “Kai.”

Kai blinked rapidly, shaking his head as he pressed a hand against his temple.

The voice was soft at first, almost curious.

“I was wondering how long it would take you to notice.”

Kai’s blood ran cold.

It wasn’t just a voice.

It was Orion.

Here.

Inside his mind.

“You’re getting close,” Orion mused, his voice smooth, taunting. “That’s good. I was beginning to think you were going to hide forever.”

Kai ground his teeth, shoving against the presence, trying to force it out.

“Come now,” Orion sighed. “You and I both know that won’t work.”

Kai’s breath hitched.

He had to stop this. He had to—

“Kai,” Lucian’s voice snapped through the fog in his head, shaking him free.

Kai staggered back, his chest heaving.

Lucian’s eyes were sharp, concerned. “What’s wrong?”

Kai exhaled slowly, clenching his fists. “He’s in my head.”

Anna’s face paled. “He’s talking to you?”

Kai swallowed hard. “Not just talking. He’s—he’s there. Like he’s… connected to me.”

Lucian’s jaw clenched. “Can you push him out?”

Kai shook his head. “I tried.”

Orion’s presence was still there, lingering like an unseen chain wrapped around Kai’s ribs.

“You can fight it all you want,” Orion whispered in his mind. “But we both know you won’t win.”

Kai forced it down, shoved Orion’s voice into the depths of his mind, and looked at the others. “It doesn’t matter. We have to keep moving.”

Lucian hesitated for only a second before nodding.

They pressed on.

Hours passed.

The sun was beginning to set when the terrain shifted.

The trees grew taller, their bark dark and twisted, the underbrush dense with tangled roots. The forest felt older here, untouched by time, forgotten by the world.

And at its center, nestled between jagged cliffs—

Was Orion’s fortress.

Kai felt his breath catch.

It was massive, larger than anything they had expected. Towering stone walls, reinforced steel gates, dozens of patrols moving in precise formations.

Lucian exhaled sharply, his gaze calculating. “That’s not just a hideout.”

Mira’s expression was grim. “It’s a stronghold.”

Kai swallowed. “It’s a kingdom.”

Anna stepped forward, pressing a hand against a nearby tree for support, her entire body shaking.

Kai moved toward her instantly. “Anna?”

She clenched her jaw, eyes glowing as she exhaled shakily. “He knows we’re here.”

Before anyone could respond—

A single, echoing howl cut through the night.

Followed by another.

And then another.

The alarm had been raised.

Kai’s pulse spiked.

Lucian’s voice was sharp, commanding. “Positions—now!”

The trees exploded with movement.

Wolves emerged from the shadows—dozens of them, their eyes glowing in the dim light, their bodies perfectly in sync, moving like one mind, one entity.

Controlled.

Just like before.

Orion’s army had found them.

And this time, they weren’t holding back.

Kai’s claws unsheathed, his instincts roaring to the surface.

This wasn’t just a battle.

This was the beginning of the end.
