Chapter 86 Professor of Magic
PROFESSOR CORNELIUS FELL
The Hermetic Order meets in chambers beneath the British Museum. Thirteen mages, masters of their crafts, gathered to discuss supernatural control.
I'm presenting tonight.
"Subject: Callum Brennan. Status: Alpha resistance leader, Rookeries." I pull up photos. "Age twenty-eight. Born wolf. Framed and exiled by brother. Currently leading seventy-three packless wolves in organized resistance."
The council watches my presentation with interest.
"Assessment?" asks Grandmaster Thorne. He's been leading the Order for forty years.
"High intelligence, strong leadership, genuine charisma. Natural Alpha material." I advance to next slide. "But also damaged. Prison trauma, betrayal issues, desperate for validation. Exploitable."
"You've infiltrated his organization?" Thorne asks.
"Through medical assistance. I treated wounded after Parliamentary hunter attack. Gained trust through Isla Reid, his medical coordinator." I show photos of the clinic. "They believe I'm generous doctor. Don't realize I'm studying them."
"Studying for what purpose?"
"Hybrid breeding program." I pull up Marian's scans. "Pregnant Omega carrying viable hybrid fetus. Mother is wolf, father is human. Child should be impossible. But it's developing normally."
Murmurs around the table. Hybrid pregnancies are holy grail of Hermetic research.
"If we can replicate this," I continue, "if we can understand the genetic mechanisms allowing successful hybrid development, we can create controlled breeding programs. Human-led supernatural armies. Werewolf strength under human command."
"You're proposing militarization of supernatural genetics," Grandmaster Thorne says slowly.
"I'm proposing evolution of human-supernatural relations. Currently supernaturals exist outside our control. Parliament runs London's supernatural community. We're observers. Researchers. Powerless." I lean forward. "But if we control breeding, if we create new supernatural species loyal to us, we become power brokers."
"Ambitious," notes Master Corvinus. "Also dangerous. Supernaturals won't cooperate with human-led breeding programs."
"They will if they don't know it's happening." I show my clinic footage. "Marian trusts Isla. Isla trusts me. I provide prenatal care. Document everything. After birth, we study the child. Learn the genetic sequences. Replicate the process."
"And the mother?"
"Expendable. Once we have the data."
Silence.
Then Thorne speaks. "What about Callum Brennan? How does he fit into this?"
"He's also valuable subject. Born wolf with interesting psychology. Responds to loyalty, community, protection instincts. If we could control him, we could control his followers." I pull up the final slide. "Tonight Mordaunt is capturing him. Trapping him during rescue attempt for the dhampir."
"Mordaunt's planning to kill him."
"Initially, yes. But I've proposed alternative." I show my correspondence with Mordaunt. "Capture alive. Transfer to Hermetic Order custody. We study him. Break him. Turn him into controlled asset."
"Mind control?" Master Sybil sounds skeptical. "Werewolves resist mental manipulation. Pack bonds interfere with external influence."
"Normally, yes. But Callum's packless. Exiled. No Alpha bond to protect him." I pull out a vial. Silver liquid, glowing faintly. "I've developed new formula. Combines vampire venom, wolfsbane extract, and binding magic. Creates artificial Alpha bond. Whoever administers it becomes Callum's new Alpha. He'll follow orders compulsively."
"You've tested this?"
"On three subjects. Two survived. Both showed complete loyalty to administrator." I don't mention the third subject died screaming. "The formula works. Question is whether council approves using it on Brennan."
Grandmaster Thorne studies the vial. "If we control Callum, we control his resistance. Seventy-three packless wolves become our army."
"Exactly."
"And if it fails? If the formula doesn't work on him specifically?"
"Then we dissect him. Learn what makes born wolves different from turned. Use that data for breeding program." I shrug. "Either way, we gain valuable information."
"You're very cold about this," Master Corvinus observes.
"I'm very practical. Supernatural exist. They're stronger, faster, more dangerous than humans. Our only advantage is intelligence. Research. Control through knowledge." I meet his eyes. "Sentiment is luxury we can't afford."
The council votes. Ten in favor, three abstaining.
I have approval.
"Coordinate with Mordaunt," Thorne instructs. "When he captures Brennan, transfer custody immediately. Bring him here. We'll begin programming."
"And the hybrid child?"
"Monitor the pregnancy. Document everything. When birth occurs, we take the child for study." Thorne stands. "This is opportunity to advance human understanding of supernatural genetics decades forward. Don't waste it."
The meeting adjourns.
I return to my lab. Prepare the mind control formula. It needs to be administered within hours of capture for maximum effectiveness.
The spell components are complex. Vampire venom from fresh thrall. Wolfsbane grown in moonlight. Binding sigils written in silver ink. All combined in precise proportions.
I work carefully. This formula represents years of research. Can't afford mistakes.
By 2 AM, it's ready. Vial of silver liquid that will turn Callum Brennan into obedient servant.
My phone rings. Mordaunt.
"Professor Fell. I have your subject. Brennan's captured. Along with nine others and the dhampir."
"Excellent. I'm on my way."
"Bring your formula. I want this done tonight. Before he has chance to resist."
"Understood."
I gather my equipment. The vial. Syringes. Backup supplies in case complications arise.
This is it. Years of research culminating in one injection.
Callum Brennan thinks he's building resistance. Fighting for freedom. Creating community.
He doesn't realize he's about to become exactly what he's fighting against.
Controlled. Programmed. Slave to human master.
The irony is delicious.
I arrive at the warehouse district within twenty minutes. Mordaunt's hunters have Callum's crew contained in a factory. Surrounded. Disarmed.
Callum's in the center, standing protectively over Valentina. Even captured, he's trying to lead. Trying to protect.
That loyalty will make him perfect subject.
Mordaunt sees me arrive. "Professor. Your timing is impeccable."
"I came as soon as you called." I pull out the vial. "This is the formula. One injection, he's ours."
"How long until it takes effect?"
"Immediate bonding. Full programming within an hour."
"Perfect." Mordaunt turns to his hunters. "Bring me Callum Brennan. Alive. Restrained."
The hunters move in.
Callum fights. Of course he does. But he's outnumbered, exhausted, and protecting wounded.
They take him down. Silver chains. Heavy restraints.
Bring him before us.
"Callum Brennan," Mordaunt says pleasantly. "Meet Professor Fell. He's going to help you see reason."
Callum looks at me. Recognition dawns. "You. The doctor from Isla's clinic."
"Guilty." I prepare the injection. "I've been studying your community. Very interesting research opportunity."
"You were never there to help."
"I was there to learn. Help was just the cover story." I approach with the syringe. "This won't hurt. Well, it will hurt terribly. But only for a moment."
Callum struggles against the chains. "What is that?"
"Your new purpose." I inject the formula directly into his neck.
Callum screams.
The formula works fast. Silver liquid spreading through his bloodstream. Reaching his brain. Rewriting neural pathways. Creating artificial Alpha bond.
His eyes go glassy. Fighting stops. Body relaxes into restraints.
"How do you feel?" I ask.
"Strange," Callum whispers. "Everything's... different."
"That's the bonding taking effect. In a few minutes, you'll imprint on me as your new Alpha. You'll follow my orders instinctively. Fight your impulses if you want. The formula's stronger."
"No." Callum's voice is weak. "I won't... can't..."
"You will. You already are." I smile. "Welcome to the Hermetic Order, Callum. You're going to help us build something extraordinary."
His eyes meet mine. Horror and understanding mixing.
Then the formula completes its work.
And Callum Brennan, resistance leader and exiled Alpha, becomes our perfectly controlled asset.
