Chapter 9 Fire in the Night
The hospital was filled with howls. Snarls echoed in the dark like thunder. The rogues were everywhere, climbing walls, tearing through gates, shadows with glowing red eyes.
Selene’s heart tightened as she stood on the rooftop edge. The sight below was a sea of teeth and claws. Innocent humans inside the hospital had no idea death was waiting outside. If she didn’t act, blood would flood the halls.
Kael jumped first. His golden wolf crashed into the rogues with a roaring sound, snapping and slashing. His body was a storm of fury, each movement fast and deadly. Blood sprayed, and rogues fell at his feet.
Riven followed, his dark wolf blazing through the battle. Where Kael was fire, Riven was steel—sharp, controlled, striking with precision. Together, they were destruction itself.
But there were too many rogues. For every rogue that fell, two more appeared.
Selene’s hands burned. Flames licked at her fingers, begging to be free. She clenched her fists, shaking. If she used her fire, they would know. They would see the Slayer she tried so hard to hide.
Her heart was pounding hard. I can’t… but I must.
She closed her eyes. “Moon Goddess, forgive me.”
Her body was blazing as Fire burst from her skin, golden and red, wrapping her like armor. The flames danced, alive, hungry. She jumped from the rooftop, landing hard on the ground.
The rogues froze for one minute. Then they rushed her.
Selene raised her hand. Fire shot out in a wide arc, entering into the rogues. Their howls split the night as the flames devoured them. The smell of burning fur filled the air.
Kael stopped mid-battle, his golden eyes widening. While Riven froze too, his wolf form staring at her in shock.
They had seen it. The Slayer’s fire.
Selene ignored their stares. She couldn’t stop now. She moved, her flames whipping around her, forming a blazing circle. Rogues tried to jump through, but each one was burned to ash before they reached her.
Her body trembled with power.
For a moment, she felt unstoppable.
For a moment, the fear inside her was drowned out by fire.
But power came with pain. Her chest burned, her vision blurred. The fire was not gentle—it tore at her, reminding her of the Blood Moon night when she was reborn.
Still, she fought. She couldn’t stop.

Kael ripped through the last rogue in his path, shifting back into human form. His heart heaved some relief, his eyes looked on Selene. “Selene…” His voice was almost a whisper. He had never looked at anyone with such awe and fear at once.
Riven shifted too, his body bloodied but strong. He stared at her, his voice low and sharp. “So it’s true. You are the Slayer.”
Selene’s flames flickered, dimming. She stood there, breathing hard, her eyes full of tears.
“Yes,” she whispered. “I am the Slayer. I am death and life in one. And now you both see why you should stay away from me.”
Kael shook his head violently. “No. You saved lives tonight. You saved me. Don’t you dare tell me to stay away.” He stepped closer, his golden eyes burning with emotion. “I don’t care if you’re fire itself—I will not leave you.”
Riven’s voice cut in, harsh but trembling underneath. “And what about the packs? When they find out what she is, they’ll turn on her. She’ll be hunted.”
Selene lowered her eyes. “That’s already happening. The rogues won’t stop. And soon, the packs won’t either. They’ll see me as a weapon. Or a curse.”
Her words made the silence heavy.
The battlefield smelled of blood and smoke. The humans inside the hospital were safe, but Selene’s heart wasn’t.

Suddenly, a low growl rolled across the night.
The three of them turned sharply.
Out of the shadows stepped a massive rogue, larger than any Selene had ever seen. His fur was black as night, his eyes glowing crimson. His presence sent chills down her spine.
The other rogues, the survivors, bowed their heads before him.
Selene’s breath ceased for a second. This wasn’t just a rogue. This was something else. Something darker.
The beast spoke, his voice deep and echoing, not like a normal wolf. “So the Slayer shows herself at last.”
Selene’s blood turned cold. “Who are you?”
The rogue’s grin revealed long, sharp fangs. “Your end.”
He raced forward, faster than anything she had fought before. Kael moved to block him, but the beast swung him aside like he was nothing. Riven attacked, but the rogue caught him by the throat and threw him to the ground.
Selene’s screamed. “No!”
Her fire exploded, blazing brighter than ever before. She threw it at the rogue, but he only laughed as the flames licked at his fur. He didn’t burn.
Impossible.
Selene staggered back. “What are you…?”
The beast’s red eyes gleamed. “I am what the packs fear. I am the true Alpha of the night.”
Her heart was beating wildly. She had never faced something like him. He was no ordinary rogue. He was a nightmare come alive.
Kael groaned, forcing himself back up. Blood ran down his face. “Selene… run!”
Riven, coughing, shouted too. “Go! Save yourself!”
But Selene couldn’t run. Not again. She clenched her fists, her flames shaking around her. Tears filled her eyes.
“No,” she whispered. “Not this time.”
The beast roared, charging again. Selene screamed, her fire bursting out with a force she had never felt before. The ground cracked beneath her, the sky itself glowing from her power.
Her flames hit the beast head-on, lighting up the night like the sun had fallen to earth.
The ground shaked with so much with fire and fury.
