Chapter 44 The Boy Is Died

Chapter 44 The Boy Is Died
Julian
I staggered back into the seat I had rejected before. I covered my face and closed my eyes, thinking it was just a very bad dream I had to wake up from. But when I raised my head up, the doctor was looking at me with a worried expression. This wasn't a dream. It was too real. "I'm guessing you didn't know about it." The doctor let out, shifting uncomfortably in his chair. "Guessing?" I growled in frustration. "I didn't know about this shit, you just told me now. Why do you fucking think I'm surprised— Tell me, does she really have cancer?" My heart paused as I hoped he would give me another reply. "Yes, my king. Do you think I would lie about this? It's in her lungs, and it has progressed quickly that is why she is passing out." "But she is a wolf. Why isn't her body healing itself?" I mumbled, "I mean if this is true, she should have healed already, right?" The doctor released a sigh and moved to the small compartment by the side of his table. "I am afraid it is more complicated than that," he said as he pulled out a bottle of water and returned to sit across from me. I sighed and rubbed my eyes as the whole thing just destroyed my existence to the point that nothing made sense anymore. He passed me the bottle of water and then pulled out some documents in the file he was carrying earlier. "But... How did she even get this... What is making it complicated? How did she have cancer? I thought cancer could only affect humans, not werewolves. Werewolves can heal, we have high regenerative tissues—" I paused. "It doesn't make sense at all doctor..." He dropped the results on the table once again and sighed. "I would have to conduct more tests but from what I have here, It seemed to have happened from childbirth. Werewolves are vulnerable at childbirth, the mothers especially. Their body and immune system is considerably weakened. That is how she must have developed cancerous cells in her lungs." I clenched my teeth hard and looked down on the floor, as if I could see my shattering heart on it. "I have to ask, how is the boy doing? If his mother has cancer, he should come for checkups." I raised a brow at the doctor and my already shattering heart sank. "What are you saying? The boy is dead, he died during childbirth." The doctor suddenly looked puzzled and slowly, shock was written on his face. My broken heart started racing as I tried to understand what his expression meant. "What's wrong?" I stood up. He turned away from me and pretended to focus on his documents. "No, it's nothing—I'm probably confusing things..." He stuttered. My eyes narrowed as it instantly became clear that something was wrong. There was something that happened that he wasn't telling me and I wasn't letting him go away like that. He seemed to even know that Laura had a son! And this destroyed whatever was left of my heart. Laura had a boy for me. If only I had cared for her. I was so clouded by my need for revenge and hate that I didn't bother checking on her when she had that miscarriage. And now that I was getting some sort of information, the doctor wanted to shut me down. I grabbed him by the shoulder and spun him around. "Doctor, what is it?" I glared into his eyes. "What do you know about the boy? What happened to him?" The man trembled in my arms and I could tell he was about to lie to me again. So I wrapped my arms around his throat and gripped him hard. "I would not hesitate to hurt you if you dare lie to me!" I roared, baring my fangs at him. "Your grace— I was— I was very sure Laura had given birth to the child. I wasn't the— doctor on duty because it wasn't my department, but I remembered seeing a baby coming out of that room on that day!" I released him and he stumbled on his desk. "That means that the baby was alive at birth?" He nodded at me quickly and another wave of shock hit me. I touched my heart, holding it in place from the aftermath of the shock. I had to find out what happened to the child. If he died, where was he buried, if not, where was he? "Something that happened that day that we don't know..." I mumbled as I took in all the information. "I have a job for you," I suddenly spoke to the doctor. "You will help me find out what happened that day." The doctor looked rather unhappy, but he dared not refuse me. "Yes, your grace!" "But first, we need to also focus on Laura." I pointed out. "Is there a way Laura can be cured from the cancer?" I asked him. I was very hopeful, because I had seen a lot of documentaries on people that battled cancer. And she was a wolf. She should be able to heal from it. Worry filled his face and he signed, shaking his head. He held the edge of the table and didn't look at my face. "I'm afraid, no sir. She's already at the last stage of it, there's nothing we can do at this point." "What about a bone marrow transplant? Anything we can do to stop it?" I asked hoping for a solution. "No, we can't. There's nothing we can do at this point. I can just prescribe drugs to make her hurt less. But her death is inevitable at this point," he said. My hope crashed to the ground. I was heartbroken, depressed and feeling remorseful as I understood her. All along she knew she was going to die. What did I do to help her? Nothing but pain. I should have pressed on when she collapsed the first time but I didn't care at all, and now she was dying from cancer. I felt terrible. "Can I at least see her?" I asked the doctor, my voice barely audible. He nodded. "Yes, she should be awake by now." "Thank you very much, doctor. I really appreciate what you have done for her—for us." The doctor nodded and we both got up and walked out of the door. He led me to Laura's new ward and bowed before leaving me to proceed on my own. Her mother and the others weren't aware of this, so I knew I would be the first to see her. I took a deep breath and stepped inside. As if sensing my presence, Laura's eyes opened and it met with mine. A sharp pain shot through me as I saw her pain reflected in her eyes. I saw the tears welling up in her eyes because she realized I knew her secret now. It all made sense at that moment. I understood why she was refusing me, why she wanted to go ahead with the rejection. —It was because she was dying and she wanted to keep it away from me; from everyone... And I was being such a jerk. I caused her so much pain. Day by day, Sarah and I tormented her. Sarah spoke ill of her and I entertained it. Using my revenge as an excuse to torture her, despite the cries from my wolf. My legs were heavy but I closed the distance between us. I pulled the chair that was beside her bed and I took a hold of her hands. "Julian..." She whispered and I broke down in her hands. I couldn't handle hearing her and knowing I might never hear her anymore. I couldn't stop the tears in my eyes anymore. It all came down like rain on my face. I cried like a baby, more than when the news of my sister's death reached me. I felt angry, angry at myself because I couldn't do anything to reverse it. Rather, I made her last days even worse than before. "Laura, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have done all these things in your condition!" Laura took deep shaky breaths as I sobbed. Tears refused to pour down her eyes, but each sharp intake of breath she took broke my heart even further as I knew they were internal tears. "I am so sorry..." I cried. She gently held my face and raised it, so that I was looking into her face. "Why are you apologizing?" She whispered. "I know you have lung cancer. Why did you keep it from me?!" I drew away from her. I was also angry that she kept such a thing from me, but it was also my fault because I was a scumbag. Laura fell silent and a sad smile played on her beautiful face. "I was torturing you, but you endured it even when you knew you were suffering. Why are you doing this to yourself? Why didn't you tell anyone? Why didn't you tell me?" Laura scoffed. "Even if I told anyone, what would happen? It doesn't change the fact that I will be dead soon—" "It will change everything Laura! It will change it!" I erupted. "From now, everything has changed.”
