Chapter 181
Chapter 181
ISABELLA
The evening had been a whirlwind of laughter, elegant conversations, and glimpses of warmth I hadn’t fully felt in a long time. As Asher and I moved together across the dance floor, I found myself feeling… free. At one point, I leaned into him, and with curiosity getting the better of me, I asked, “So, do werewolves sense when others are mated? Is it just… obvious to everyone else?”
He chuckled, looking down at me with those dark eyes of his. “Yes, we do. For us, it's instinctual. It’s like a quiet, respectful boundary. Once a wolf is mated, others know not to cross it."
I hesitated but then told him about the encounter with the blonde woman, how she’d felt perfectly entitled to dismiss me. Asher’s expression softened, and he pulled me just a bit closer. “The thing is,” he explained, “you haven’t marked any of us yet, so only the males sense that we’re mated. The women… they don’t pick up on it the same way. So, to her, I probably just looked like an unmated alpha.”
I took a breath, trying to process the new perspective. “Then I guess I want to change that,” I replied, looking up at him with a sudden resolve. “When we’re all back home, I want to mark you, Jax, and Knox.”
Asher’s eyes gleamed with a look that was both proud and touched. “I’d be honored. And I’m sure they’d be just as thrilled.” His hand squeezed mine, a silent promise between us.
The rest of the evening flowed easily after that, as if everything unsaid had finally found its place. The conversations, the champagne, the clinking of glasses… it all felt lighter, easier. By the time we returned to our suite, the atmosphere was still charged with that earlier intensity, but now something softer ran underneath it—an unspoken understanding that felt as though it had been waiting all along.
Asher opened the door, letting me in first, and there was a warmth in his gaze that sent a quiet thrill through me. His voice was low, teasing, as he remarked, “You know, we could always stay in tonight and finish up those champagne flutes here… just the two of us.”
I laughed softly, but the undercurrent in his tone didn’t escape me. He took a step closer, his hand reaching for mine, pulling me into a gentle embrace that melted away the last pieces of my restraint. For the first time in a long while, I didn’t want to resist. I wanted him close, to be lost in this shared moment of trust and comfort, to finally let go.
He held my face in his hands, his eyes holding mine with a familiar, tender intensity that made my heart catch. When he leaned down to kiss me, it was soft, unhurried, as if savoring each second of closeness we’d fought so hard to regain. And as I responded, all the longing, doubt, and hope blended into something deeper, grounding us both.
In that moment, there was only us—no distance, no lingering uncertainties. Just the quiet, perfect rhythm we’d found again.
The morning light filtered softly through the curtains, casting a warm glow over the room. I shifted slightly, realizing that Asher’s arms were still wrapped around me, holding me close. He stirred and opened his eyes, meeting mine with a gentle smile.
“Well, good morning,” he murmured, his voice laced with sleep and something soft.
“Good morning yourself,” I replied, tracing a lazy finger along his shoulder. “Sleep well?”
“Better than I have in a long time.” He leaned in to press a light kiss to my forehead, his eyes glimmering with that teasing spark I’d come to adore. “So, what does my queen want to do today?”
“Oh, you’re letting me pick?” I asked, my tone light but playfully challenging.
“Absolutely. The whole day is yours,” he grinned. “Just name it, and I’m at your command.”
I laughed, considering the freedom of a day where anything was possible. After a bit of deliberation—and a bit more playful back-and-forth—I settled on lunch at a nice restaurant, somewhere special we’d both enjoy. Asher surprised me by arranging reservations at a gorgeous place with sweeping views of the city, and we spent the afternoon enjoying incredible food, sharing bites, laughing over shared stories, and basking in the easy warmth between us.
Afterward, we found ourselves at a luxurious spa, where he’d booked massages for both of us. I sank into the relaxation, letting go of everything that had been weighing on me, content to just be there with him.
By the time we finished, refreshed and utterly at ease, I could feel the call of home tugging at me. As if he sensed it, Asher caught my hand as we made our way back to the car. “Ready to head back?” he asked, eyes warm and understanding.
I nodded, a smile tugging at my lips. “Yes, ready.”
The drive back was filled with easy conversation, laughter, and comfortable silence, each moment pulling us closer as we anticipated seeing everyone again. This trip had been more than just a getaway—it felt like the start of something real, the beginning of a new chapter for us both. And as we neared home, excitement built in my chest at the thought of reuniting with our family.
KNOX
When I heard the front door creak open, a smile broke across my face before I’d even looked up. Isabella and Asher were back, and from the warmth in their eyes and the easy way they moved together, I could tell they’d had the time they needed.
“Hey, you two! Look who finally decided to rejoin the pack,” I teased, waving a dish towel as they stepped inside.
Jax, who’d been stacking up Luca’s blocks in a hopeless attempt to corral the chaos, looked over with a grin. “Good trip?” he asked, though it was pretty obvious by the way they looked at each other.
Isabella laughed softly, glancing around at the living room, which still had remnants of the night Jax and I had had with Luca. She shook her head, amused. “Looks like you survived. And maybe even had a little fun?”
“Just a little,” I joked, sharing a grin with Jax. “Though I’m not sure Luca would agree. I think he ran circles around us more than anything else.”
With a chuckle, Isabella moved down the hall, making her way to Luca’s room. As soon as she was out of earshot, I turned to Asher, raising an eyebrow. “So?” I asked, trying to keep my voice casual. “Did she give you the royal seal of approval or what?”
Asher laughed, but there was a look in his eyes—a bit shy, maybe even… proud? “Actually, there’s something else.” He glanced between me and Jax, that easy smile of his turning into something softer. “Isabella and I talked about marking.”
That got my attention. Beside me, Jax perked up, his eyes going wide, and I felt my own heart give a little leap. “You serious?” I asked, voice catching slightly.
Asher nodded, looking every bit as excited as I felt. “Yeah. She’s decided she’s ready to mark us—all three of us.”
For a second, I just stood there, trying to absorb it. The idea that she’d want that kind of commitment—to all of us—was something I’d been hoping for but hadn’t dared to expect. And the thought of it? Of being marked by her, bound to her in a way other wolves would see and respect? It was hard to describe, but it felt right.
Beside me, Jax clapped a hand on my shoulder, looking every bit as thrilled as I was. “Well, it’s about time,” he murmured, his grin almost as wide as mine.
Isabella walked back in at that moment, moving quietly, and the three of us turned to look at her. She stopped, eyeing us with a touch of curiosity, like she wasn’t sure what she’d walked into. I took a step forward, still grinning, feeling the kind of warmth I didn’t often let show. “Just so you know,” I said, my voice soft but steady, “we’re all thrilled.”
A blush rose on her cheeks, but her smile was full of light, her eyes meeting mine without hesitation. “I’m glad,” she replied, her voice barely above a whisper but filled with meaning.
I couldn’t explain it, but I knew that something had settled between the four of us in that moment—a feeling, a promise, something that went beyond words.
