Part 56
My eyes widened as I saw Avon brush past my shoulder, the sudden jolt making me snap out. Hastily I grabbed onto his elbow, trying to tug at him. The Alpha was heavy, but he stilled, a low growl escaping past his lips.
"Em..."
"No! Please, it's not what you think..." I slurred my words, lips quivering at the dark look taking over his face. He must be imagining the worst things possible, and I couldn't let him. Standing in front of Avon, I couldn't help but think about all the times Abel asked me to wait back and called me to his office.
"What do you want me to think?!" He hissed, eyes turning into slits as he slapped my hand away. It stung, the sudden hit, but I held my ground, facing him. "You reek of him!"
Unconsciously I wrapped my arms around my body, tightening them, stomach hollowing. Abel's pheromones have always been more potent, but now that he knotted, it's the strongest. My head hung low, guilt creeping inside my body.
Avon let out a loud breath, his hand massaging his temples, "How long has this been going on, Em?"
I stayed quiet, staring at my boots, finding them interesting enough to
avoid the conversation. Anything I say would only make him furious, so it's better to stay mum.
"Emma!" Avon raised his voice.
Nothing.
"Answer me!" His arm shot out and wrapped around my slender wrist, forcefully tugging on it. My nose scrunched as his nails dug into the flesh, wincing at the pain. Avon did not stop, only gritting his teeth in response. "Tell me!"
"I was going to tell you..."
"Is he forcing himself on you?"
"No!" I said sharply, freeing my hand and pinning him with a glare, something inside me snapping. The accusation was wild, an insult if anything. "That's not...No! We are seeing each other, and it's...he's not that kind of person. Allie is the only one who knows. Believe me, I wanted to tell you, but..."
His face fell, shoulders sagging, lips parting as he met my eyes. The look on his face was enough to make anyone cry, brows knitted together. Silence stretched like a rubber band before it snapped, rage clouding his features in an instant.
Avon closed the distance between us, frenzied and hyper, "Why didn't you?! Huh! You fooled me all this time and made me run after you...What this his plan..."
Before he could finish the sentence, Abel pushed him against the nearest wall, his fingers closing around Avons windpipe. A gasp flew out of my mouth, eyes widening when I saw Avon stagger at the impact, writhing. Running towards them, I nudged at Abel, still reeling from the shock of his action.
From the side, Abel resembles a feral Alpha, jaw ticked, eyes wild, and lips set in a firm line. The curl of his fingers was tight, intentional and brutal, canines baring. Avon was plastered against the wall, unable to free himself, breathing choppy.
"Let him go!" I cried. "Abel! Please."
Avon spluttered into a fist of cough, bent over before he stood upright, and I flinched. He had a visible mark around his neck, each print of the finger and the imprint of a ring Abel wore on his pinkie. The Alpha was pissed, ready to launch himself at Abel when I stepped between them.
It happened in an instant; one minute, I was standing there, and the next, his tip of claws scratched my face. Blood rushed to my ears, and my vision whitened for a long second at the impact, wincing as I felt something trickle down my cheek.
“What the fuck did you do?!”
“Shit!” Avon yelled. “I thought…I am so sorry….”
Abel was on me instantly, hands cupping my face and turning my head, eyes zoning on the wound. He's scowling, but then again, he's probably been scowling since the moment he saw Avon. The Alpha moved his hand and brushed the pad of his thumb across the cut on my cheek, and I hissed when he dragged it a little too far.
“I’m fine….” I protested, shoving his hands away from my face. It proved pointless, though, because they're back almost as quickly as they were gone.
“No. You are not.” He mumbled, again brushing his fingers on my face. My lips parted, which shouldn't be sending a shiver down my spine, but it did, my omega feeling vulnerable at the touch.
“I’m going to kill you.” Abel directed a hateful gaze at Avon, who stood still in the corner.
I exhaled a shaky breath and turned my head away from his grip, but it was no use. No matter where I tried to turn, he just pulled me back and eyes over with an intensity that had my cheeks burning red.
“It’s not a big deal,” I whined, taking a step back, and letting the cool breeze sweep past us. No amount of air was going to stop the heat rushing inside.
From the corner of my eyes, I trailed my gaze up the length of his body - it's just to read his body language, rationalise, nothing more. I noticed how Abel’s hands were curled into fists, and I knew there would be red crescent marks in the shape of his nails on his palm later. It has to hurt. I knew exactly how those nails feel digging into the skin and scratching, learned how easy it is to leave marks that last.
Part of me wanted to get close, to close the distance between us and reach out, get Abel to uncurl his fingers from his palm and stop hurting himself. To coax his hand open and maybe lace my fingers between them.
Focus!
I stamped it down, buried the urge and tucked it away in the corner of my mind under the long list of thoughts.
“I am so sorry, Emma….” Avon started, his tone softer than before, remorse filling his features when he saw the cut. “I swear I didn’t mean to….”
“Stop talking to her! How the hell did you even get here?”
“Abel! Please.” I huffed, wrapping a hand around his bicep, feeling him melt under the touch.
“Why are you defending him? He hurt you….”
“It was an accident.” I tried meekly, but the rugged look in his eyes did not ease at all, brows pinched together.
“He needs to leave….”
I turned to Avon and gave him a pleading look, knowing that Abel wouldn’t listen. His Alpha was on display, not a hint of holding back, the need to protect and possess.
“We will talk later.”
I waved at Avon, dragging Abel to the elevator, all while he kept throwing daggers at my friend’s
back. The minute we were inside, Abel started scenting me, nose buried in the hollow of my throat.
“No. You are not talking to that loser again.”
“Okay, Alpha.”
***
“You know…” Abel started, enough to distract me from the fact that the cotton ball was cold and painful against the cut. The Alpha did not let me skip to my flat, pulling me straight inside his room. He wanted to nurse my wound, the scratch on the cheek as not to scare Allie. As if my best friend would be spooked by that, she had seen me in worse conditions. “I can think of better ways to take your mind off of thin-"
I shoved at him, and didn’t flinch when I felt the sting of alcohol swiping at the cut. That's fine; I can deal with the pain. It's a welcome distraction.
“Sorry I won’t make any more jokes!”
“You know I'd give you anything,” He said after a while, interrupting the comfortable silence we had fallen into. One of his hands came up to brush his fingers against my jaw, to trail them down the nape of my neck, trace them across like he's trying to map it out and memorise it. It made me feel like my skin was on fire, dizzy when the hand worked it's way back up.
The Alpha brushed the tip of his finger across the plush of my mouth and pulled at the bottom lip from between my teeth, let's it hang there for a second before releasing it.
“You just need to ask for it, baby.”
“Abel,” I breathed, fluttering my eyes open and stilled. He’s right there, only few inches, feeling his cold breath fanning my face. A lump formed in my throat, overwhelmed with rush of feelings, unable to think of anything except the Alpha and his thick, heady scent coursing through my head and my veins.
He hummed in response, letting his thumb drag across my mouth for a second time, and if I were in the right frame of mind, I would complain about how unsanitary it looked. But my mind was far from rational thought, and then he tugged a little harder, swiping his thumb inside my mouth. The Alpha was quick to pull it away, and I nearly whined, forgetting every thought I ever had.
I wanted them back, his large hands framing my face, but I had no idea how to ask for them. I knew I wanted them so badly that it terrified me. No one has ever made me feel so greedy, so wanton.
It's insane, I was a person in control most of the time, but he makes me doubt it. It makes me feel. It makes me want things I had never thought about, and he knows the effect.
“Abel,” I whispered again because that's all my brain was good at coming up with right now, chest feeling tight.
“Hm?”
“I love you.”
