Chapter 45 The Defector

Chapter 45 The Defector
Aurora:

The quiet in the penthouse was a fragile thing. I was reviewing security protocols when Lucas entered, his expression grim.

"We have a problem. Or an opportunity. It's hard to tell." He placed his tablet on my desk. "A junior aide from Michaelson's office is trying to reach you on a secured channel. His name is Ethan. He's a shifter."

I leaned back, instincts flaring. "A trap."

"Probably. But his biometric signature reads as terrified, not deceptive. He's using a civilian-level encryption he shouldn't have access to. This is amateur hour."

"Put him through. Isolate the line."

A moment later, a grainy video feed showed a young man with wide, frantic eyes. "Alpha Kingston? Sir, I... I work for Senator Michealson."

"I know who you are, Ethan. You're taking a significant risk."

"I don't have a choice anymore." He ran a hand through his hair. "They brought in a kid last week. It couldn't have been more than sixteen. His only crime was that he could sense lies. They called him 'unregistered.' They're processing him."

"Processing?"

"Testing. Measuring. Some don't come out." His voice cracked. "There's a facility. Beneath North Star Shipping in the industrial district. That's where they take them."

The information was useful, but standard. "Why contact me? You know what happens to defectors."

"Because of your mate," he said, his gaze steadying. "The True Luna. They're not just afraid of her, sir. They have a file. They're planning how to use her. Not as a leader. As a resource. They think her power can be... harnessed. Contained."

The air in the room went cold. Koda surged forward with a silent snarl.

Ours. Protect.

I kept my voice level. "That's a bold claim."

"It's in the memos! They see her like they see everyone, a tool or a threat. After the Gala, the directives changed. The tone got... hungry." He leaned closer. "But that's not why I'm really calling."

"Then get to the point. Your time is limited."

"The archives aren't at the facility. The important ones, the old ones about the True Luna, they're kept somewhere else. A private vault on the Northern Cliffs. Aethelred Holdings."

I exchanged a look with Lucas, who gave a slight nod. The corporation was a ghost, but it tracked.

"Why tell me this?" I asked. "You could have just given me the facility location and called it a day."

"Because a raid on the facility just saves the current prisoners. It doesn't stop them from starting over next week." Ethan's voice turned hard. "But if you get the original texts, if you prove what she really is... You don't just rescue people. You change the narrative."

The kid was smarter than he looked. And more desperate.

"Your sister," I said, recalling the file Lucas had pulled during our conversation. "She's in college. Pre-med."

His face went pale. "You know about Maya?"

"Protection for both of you," I said. "In exchange for everything. The facility schematics, security details for the vault, everything you have. You'll be extracted in one hour. These are your coordinates." I transmitted the information. "If you're not there, the deal is void."

"I'll be there." The call cut out.

The room was silent for a moment before Aurora spoke from the doorway. "He was telling the truth." It sounded more like a statement than a question.

"It's the Council's way," I said. "They don't understand power that can't be controlled."

Lucas looked up from his screens. "The facility is a legitimate target. High risk, but high reward. Freeing those prisoners would be a significant blow."

"But it's what he wants us to do," Aurora said, her journalist's mind already working. "The facility is the obvious move. It's where our emotions would lead us. To save people."

I nodded. "Exactly. It's the reactive move. The Council will be expecting it. They'll have reinforcements ready."

"So we don't give them what they expect," she said, her gaze meeting mine. "We hit the vault first."

"It's the strategic choice," Lucas agreed. "The facility is a symptom. The archives are the cause. But the political fallout from ignoring a prison full of supernaturals..."

"Will be manageable if we have the proof that justifies it," I finished. "We split our forces. A small, deniable team for the vault. The main pack prepares for the facility raid, but they don't move until we have what we need from the cliffs."

Aurora stepped fully into the room. "And what if the vault is a trap? What if this Ethan is more loyal than he appears?"

"Then we'll be ready for that too," I said. "But my instinct says he's exactly what he appears to be. A scared kid who saw something he couldn't unsee and finally found a spine."

The plan was taking shape. Not the emotional response, but the calculated strike. The defector had given us a choice between our hearts and our heads. For the first time since this war began, we were choosing our heads.

"The Council sees compassion as a weakness," I told Aurora. "Today, we show them it's a weapon. We'll save their victims, but first, we'll steal their justification for creating them."

Aurora’s gaze didn’t waver. "And if the vault is empty? If this is all for nothing?"

"Then we still have the facility. We still send a message." I moved to stand before her, the bond humming with the gravity of the moment. "But I don't think it will be empty. They guard their secrets too fiercely. Ethan’s fear was real. He wasn’t just selling information; he was trying to save his soul."

Lucas interjected, his focus on the tactical displays. "The extraction team is en route for Ethan and his sister. We have a seventy-three-minute window before their absence is noted. The vault team needs to be wheels up in forty."

"Make it thirty," I said, my decision final. "I'll lead the vault team myself."

Aurora’s hand shot out, gripping my forearm. "Levi, no. It's too dangerous. Send Jax. Send Rylan."

"It has to be me." I covered her hand with my own. "If there are wards keyed to bloodline or power level, I'm the only one who can breach them. Aurora, I won't send my people where I won't go myself."

The protest died in her eyes, replaced by a reluctant understanding. This was the burden of command, the price of being Alpha.

"Then I'm coming with you," she stated, her tone leaving no room for argument.

I shook my head. "Absolutely not. Your safety…"

"Is tied to ending this," she finished for me, her voice sharp. "My power might be the key to understanding what we find. I have my shields. I can protect my mind, Levi. I'm your partner. And partners don't get left behind when the mission matters most."

The relief I felt on hearing those words was tangible. Though all I wanted was to lock her up and throw away the key, but I won't repeat my past mistake I made in the name of protection.

"Alright," I conceded, the word tasting foreign but right. "But you follow my lead. Every step. No heroics."

A grim smile touched her lips. "When have I ever been heroic?"

"Since the moment you decided to keep our children," I said softly. "Since you looked a Council envoy in the eye and declared yourself my wife. You've done nothing but be heroic, Aurora. Now, let's go be strategic."

As we moved to gear up, the plan was set. We would strike at the mind of the beast while its claws were busy elsewhere. The game had changed. We were no longer playing defense. We were bringing the war home.
