ZORA'S POV
His sincere smile warmed my heart, dispelling some of the doubts that haunted me. The pack revealed itself as we approached, and I could feel the vibrations of the energy emanating from that special place.
Entering the central clearing where the wolves gathered, the atmosphere was charged with anticipation. Curious eyes turned to us as Hunter and I shared a smile that expressed our new journey as mates and parents.
Alpha Alastair and his Beta, Ulrich, were among them, waiting. Crossing the boundaries of the clearing, a palpable tension filled the space.
“Alastair, Ulrich, I have news to share with everyone,” Hunter announced, his voice echoing through the trees.
The murmurs ceased, giving way to an expectant silence.
“Zora is pregnant. We're having a child.”
The impact of the words reverberated throughout the pack. Wolves exchanged glances, expressions ranging from surprise to curiosity. The pains I felt intensified, but I knew the real challenge was still to come.
Hunter looked at me, proud and happy. However, I could barely ignore the knot of apprehension in my stomach.
The father, Alastair, approached, radiant, and embraced us. He seemed genuinely happy, and a wave of relief washed over me. Perhaps, after all, this was a new chance to build bonds and overcome the past.
“Congratulations, Hunter, Zora. This is a blessing for the whole pack,” proclaimed Alastair.
The forest's cold seemed to diminish amid the congratulations, but my pains increased. Hunter, as observant as ever, approached.
“Zora, take my bear skin; you're trembling too much,” Hunter said, draping the skin over my shoulders.
I leaned on him, the pains becoming sharper. The pack gathered around, and warm greetings mixed with the murmurs of the forest. The pains that had previously afflicted me now seemed alleviated by the joy overflowing in that moment.
Hunter and I, united by the prospect of a new life, would face the challenges and complexities of Alastair's pack. And as we walked through the woods, I embraced the hope that together, we could overcome any obstacle and build a future filled with love and acceptance.
***
The night in Alastair's pack unfolded in a ceremony full of traditions and connections. As a special guest, pregnant with Hunter's child, I tried to participate in the celebration, but the pains radiating from my belly made every movement uncomfortable. I chose to sit around the bonfire, watching the dance of flames and the interactions among pack members.
Hunter, my mate, engaged in lively conversations with other wolves. I tried to focus on the ceremony, but my attention was constantly diverted, looking for signs of Fierce among the attendees.
That's when I spotted Sibyl and Cierce emerging from the forest, their looks laden with apprehension. Sensing my gaze, they tried to act naturally, but something was clearly disturbing them. A feeling of alertness ran through my body.
Checking if no one was watching, I touched the amulet around my neck and took out some rue, hidden in a secret compartment. I mixed the herb in my cup, walking decisively toward the two omegas.
A warm smile lit up my face as I greeted them, “I'm so happy to see you again.”
Cierce, surprised, replied, “Us too, Zora.”
Sibyl, with a watchful look, observed me carefully before commenting, “You seem different.”
With a joyful touch on my belly, I responded, “Oh, maybe it's because of the pregnancy.”
Cierce's eyes widened, and she exclaimed, “Wonderful!”
“Ah, yes! Pregnancy can work wonders,” I added, trying to shift the focus.
Cierce and Sibyl exchanged a silent look, and something in the depths of Sibyl's eyes indicated suspicion. She wasn't entirely convinced.
“Are you really sure about this?” Sibyl questioned, raising a sensitive point. “Isn't it a bit early for you to be pregnant?”
I looked at her calmly, holding my cup.
“Actually, Sibyl, I think we're running out of drinks. Maybe you should go get more before it runs out,” I suggested, diverting the subject.
While Sibyl walked away, Cierce remained by my side, casting a curious glance. I handed her my cup, and Cierce took it in one gulp.
“So, you are pregnant, Zora?” Cierce asked, her expression indicating that she knew there was something more.
With a sigh, I chose to awaken the rue, “I need information about Fierce. Any updates since I left?”
Cierce hesitated before whispering, “Fierce left the pack just before you guys arrived. She was helped by Sibyl to get to the Cabin and then sent away to Denver, that's all I know.”
A wave of worry surrounded me, but, maintaining composure, I thanked her for the information and asked Cierce to be discreet.
Back at the bonfire, hiding my concerns, I delved into the appearances and interactions of the ceremony. Fierce's escape loomed over us, and the uncertainty of the reason for her abrupt departure mingled with the anxiety of pregnancy. However, behind the smile, I presented to the pack, a silent determination burned. I was ready to fight for my place alongside Hunter, regardless of the obstacles that stood in our way.
While touching my belly, I reflected on the bombshell information Cierce shared with me. Fierce, Hunter's destined mate, had fled the pack with Sibyl's help. My mind spun, trying to understand the reasons for this sudden escape. Why would Fierce choose to disappear without answers, without wanting to know why she wasn't chosen as Luna?
Uncertainty hung in the air, and suddenly an epiphany struck me. Fierce would only flee if she had something to hide, something that went against the pack's laws. The revelation hit me like lightning. Fierce was pregnant.
I stood up hastily, holding my belly, while the tumult of thoughts stirred in my mind. With a torch in hand, I walked toward the forest, determined to confirm my suspicions. The glow of the flames lit the path as I advanced toward the Cabin.
Upon arriving, my eyes fixed on the wooden structure, a silent witness to many moments. A conclusion formed in my mind: Fierce needed to be removed once and for all. I took the torch, feeling its threatening heat, and began to spread the fire around the Cabin.
The flames came to life, consuming the wood with insatiable voracity. My heart raced as the flames grew, becoming a fiery metaphor for my determination to eliminate any obstacle between me, Hunter, and our future child.
The crackling of the flames echoed in the forest's quiet, but my mind was focused on making a decision that would change the course of things in the pack. The fire was my answer, an action rooted in the conviction that Fierce should no longer cast a shadow over our destiny.
The dancing lights of the fire reflected the resolution burning in my eyes. Watching the Cabin being engulfed by the fire, a sense of liberation and power emerged within me. The fire, a symbol of transformation and purification, now had a new meaning for me.
As I watched the Cabin being devoured by the fire, a pang of sharp pain cut through my belly, making me shudder. The pregnancy, once a symbol of hope, now became a painful burden. Bending before the intensity of the pain, the voices of the ceremony approached, echoing through the trees.
I walked hastily through the forest, trying to distance myself from the Cabin and the spectacle of flames I left behind. However, the pain increased, becoming unbearable. A few meters from the ceremony, I stopped and finally threw myself to the ground, near a tree, surrendering to the agony that dominated my body.
With trembling hands, I touched between my legs, and the sight of blood on my fingers brought a cruel revelation. My eyes widened, and a cry of despair tore through the silent night of the forest.
“No...” I murmured, as if denial could reverse what was happening. Tears streamed down my face as I faced the cruel reality unfolding. The pain, now both physical and emotional, enveloped me like a storm, obscuring any clear thought.
My vision blurred with the tears that welled involuntarily, and as the forest's silence witnessed my pain, the echo of the ceremony voices approached, betraying my presence. I knew I had to hide my condition, not only because of the consequences of the fire but also to keep my place alongside Hunter without suspicion.
Helpless, I remained there, between the tree and the darkness of the forest, trying to contain the pain and loss. Destiny, now, wove a tragic plot as I faced the consequences of my choices.
Between tears and sobs, I touched between my legs again. My fingers were stained with red, and a sense of emptiness settled in my being. The cruel reality manifested when I realized that I had lost my baby. Muffled screams escaped my lips, and my vision blurred with tears. What was once a promising future now dissolved into tears and ashes, consumed by the fire I had ignited.
The shadow of the Cabin burning in the distance echoed the darkness that now inhabited my heart. Destiny had its own cruel turns, and I, who sought to control the course of life, now found myself losing the one thing I desired more than any power: my own offspring.
