Chapter 135
Chapter 135
The morning sun climbed into the sky, softening the aftermath of the night before. Kathy woke when a brushed against her leg, light enough to tickle. She opened her eyes slowly and found Anthony still asleep beside her, his wolf's ears resting against his head. When she reached out to touch them, he caught her by the waist and rolled over her, startling a laugh from her. He smiled, and gold and red flickered in his eyes.
“Good morning, Max,”
“Morning, mate,”
“Your hair is getting so long. It needs a cut.”
Kathy used her other hand to touch his ears, making him blush as he tried to pull away. She loved seeing Max—or Anthony—blush; he looked so cute when he got like this.
“I will heat of your blood for you,”
“What happened last night?”
“We had a small problem last night, but don’t worry. My father and Zack cleaned it up. You drank human blood, and that can harm your body. Once I get back, you can drink synthetic blood, and it will help flush the human blood out of your system.”
“Anyway, while you were fighting bad guys without no panties on,”
“We were in the middle of the shower when they cut our power. I didn’t have no choice but to fight them without one,”
Max rubbed her cheek and smiled, his tail still brushing against her leg. Kathy blushed even deeper, aware that she was still wearing only his shirt and nothing underneath. She met his eyes, trying not to let him see how flustered she was.
“I will make up some breakfast,”
“You are no fun,”
Max lay back on the bed and draped an arm over his eyes while Kathy went into the kitchen to make breakfast. She took a bottle of blood from the fridge, poured it into a microwave-safe cup, and warmed it up. Then she used her phone to turn on the TV, choosing a show called The Fae Has Three Husbands, about a wolf, a vampire, and a dragon all living under one roof. With the show playing in the background, Kathy grabbed her tablet and called her father. He answered right away.
“Morning father,”
“Daughter. How is Anthony?”
“He’s better. I’m heating the blood now. Question—can I add blood to his food?”
“Sure. That’s how your mother cooks my food.”
“How are the babies?” asked Kathy
“Probably still sleeping Melody, woke up this morning for a bottle and went back to sleep, and the boys slept all night. They tired out their nannies,”
“That good. Do mom knows about last night?”
Seth grew quiet and looked away from the screen. A moment later, someone turned the tablet, revealing Kathy’s mother standing nearby. Kathy had thought her mother was still asleep because her father had said so.
"Good morning, Mother," she said, the words soft in the early light.
“Don’t ‘good morning’ me. Why did you call your father instead of me?”
“Um… well, you were sleeping, and Father would be upset if he found out you left his castle while he was asleep. You know how strong his vampire senses are. He would know.”
“That’s not the point, daughter. If you’re in trouble, I want to help.”
“I will next time, if I get in any trouble,”
“I didn’t to scold you. You are my daughter, I would go crazy if anything happened to you, not only your children and your mate would be alone without you,”
“Mom, understand,”
“Good, here is your father,”
Grace turned the screen back to Seth. Kathy remembered the bottle she had left in the microwave and hurried to take it out. Luckily, it was still warm. She poured half into another cup and mixed the rest into the breakfast she was making for Anthony while she continued talking with her father.
“You are scared of my mother, father?” asked Kathy
“Yes, I am. She’s the only one who cooks my food, so she could easily poison me and get away with it. Anyway, your mother is right—she wants to help you,”
“I know father,”
Kathy prepared her breakfast, cracking eggs into a bowl and adding a hint of blood, then cooking them with bacon, all the while continuing her conversation with her father who was focused on his paperwork. With her cooking done, she abandoned the messy counter, intending to clean it up post-breakfast.
“Alright dad I will talk you and mom later,”
“Okay take care,”
After the call ended, Kathy set everything on a tray and carried it to the bed. Max helped her steady it as she slipped under the blanket and began eating breakfast, smiling while the cooking show played on TV.
“You got in trouble with your mother,”
“Yes, you can say that.”
“What are we going to do today?”
“Um…clean up and making you lunch and dinner while you still recovering,”
“I am fine, I feel stronger,”
“You might feel that way, but not your body,”
As Anthony ate his breakfast, Kathy kept thinking about how the moon goddess had been watching over them. The way she met Anthony by the end of the road like never should have happened the way it did, yet it had led her to him and helped him reclaim his pack from his toxic family. Kathy knew she had gone searching the pack grounds when she probably should not have, but something inside her had pushed her forward. Even the painful memory of Nathan watching them was something she did not want to revisit. Still, Kathy believed she had a gift for helping people who truly needed her. She loved her family, and raising three babies would be a challenge, but with Anthony by her side, she knew they could face it together.
Kathy picked up her cellphone when a text from her mother came through. She opened the attached photo and nearly dropped the phone when she saw it was a pregnancy test. Stunned, she looked at the picture again before quickly replying in the family group chat.
“Wait… does this mean I’m not going to be the only child anymore? Because I’m not sure I’m ready to share the family spotlight,” Kathy asked.
“Nope. Are you happy you are going to have a brother or sister?” said Grace.
“Yay! I didn’t know that father…. You know what mother I am happy for you and dad,”
“So, does this mean the ‘ancient vampire’ jokes are officially retired, or do I get a grace period?” Seth asked.
“Um… no. Not in the family chat,” Kathy said.
Anthony put his fork down on the plate and look Kathy was sharing her phone for a long time then touch her arm.
“Honey, what wrong?”
“My parents are going to have a baby,”
“Wait…say that again,”
"My mom's going to have a baby, and I'm going to have a brother or sister!" What are the possibilities for a vampire to have offspring? I thought they couldn’t have none.”
“Honey, don’t forget your father is a scientist. He probably figured out a way for him and your mom to have a child,” Anthony said.
Anthony yawned as Kathy loaded the dishes onto the tray and carried them to the counter. She still needed to wash the dishes and do the laundry. When Kathy returned, she found Anthony asleep on the couch again. She pulled the blanket over him, turned off the TV, and dimmed the lights.
While Anthony slept, Kathy finished her chores, made herself a cup of tea, and sat at the table, letting the warm sunlight touch her skin. A yellow envelope appeared in front of her. When she looked down, she realized it was the DNA test for the spy who had slept with Maria, but she did not want to open it. Her spy stepped out of the shadows and bowed at her feet.
“The results are here. I want you to open them and find out if Melody is your daughter.”
You could add the reason like this:
“Miss, I’m truly sorry. I didn’t know Maria was your enemy, and I regret not realizing the danger sooner. If I had known, I would have told you right away. Please forgive me,” said spy
“Give me one reason I should forgive you after you let that danger get so close to my family.”
“You helped me when no one else would, back when I was a rogue vampire. You didn’t have to take me in, but you did—just like you helped Zack. I was wrong to go behind your back and sleep with Maria,” said the spy.
“I’ll spare you this once, but don’t mistake my mercy for trust. Betray me again—or let danger come near my family—and you’ll learn exactly how far my forgiveness reaches. Is that clear?”
“Yes, my lady,” the spy said, bowing at her feet. “Thank you for your mercy.”
“Do you want to see the result?” asked Kathy
“No, my lady. Melody is your daughter, and I shall accept the result, whatever it may be. Before I leave, I should tell you that Skye is staying at a hotel in town, under a false name. The last time I checked, she was asking people about you and spreading rumors that you took her children, leaving her to care for your parents. From the way she spoke, it sounded as though she wanted people to doubt you before making her next move.”
Kathy’s fingers tightened around the envelope, but she kept her expression calm. Skye’s name stirred anger in her chest, along with a sharper, colder fear. She remembered the last time Skye had stood in front of her, smiling sweetly while twisting the truth until everyone around her began to question what they had seen. Back then, Kathy had brushed it off as bitterness. Now she understood it had been a warning. Skye was not just trying to defend herself; she was planting doubt, turning people against Kathy before they even knew the truth. If Skye wanted a fight, Kathy would be ready, but she would not let fear guide her next move. Not with her children, her parents, and Anthony depending on her.
“Skye has always known how to twist the truth, but this feels deliberate. I want to know exactly who heard her lies and who was foolish enough to believe them.” Kathy’s mind moved quickly, piecing together every rumor, every false smile, and every hidden motive Skye might be using. If Skye was spreading lies this openly, then she was not acting out of anger alone—she was preparing the ground for something bigger. “Send someone to bring her here before she reaches anyone else. My sister still thinks she can move in the shadows and turn people against me without consequence. If she is already testing which doors will open for her, then I want to know before she steps through one. If she wants to play games, I’ll play along—and this time, I have a surprise waiting for her.”
“With your permission, my lady, I shall take my leave and send someone to bring her here at once.”
“Thank you,”
After the spy left, Kathy stared at the envelope as if it might burn her before she even touched it. At last, she opened it, pulled out the paper, and read the truth in silence: Melody was the spy’s daughter. Her stomach twisted, but her face did not move. Guilt pressed hard against her chest. He had a right to know, but Melody had a greater right to peace, and Kathy would not give him a reason to claim her or shatter the life she had built around that child. Some truths did not heal; they only bled into every wound they touched. Kathy lifted the paper in her hand, let her power flare, and watched the result curl into ash. By the time the last blackened piece disappeared, her decision was final. The paper was gone, but the secret it carried would haunt her longer than she cared to admit. If protecting Melody made her the villain in someone else’s story, then Kathy would carry that title without regret.
