The Royal Decree

The Royal Decree

POV: Kieran

The messenger's arrival froze everything. One moment we were standing in a defensive circle, prepared to fight to the death. The next, every soldier in the courtyard stopped moving. Even Magnus's forces lowered their weapons, confused and uncertain. I kept my position between Magnus and Seraphina, but my attention shifted to the gates where the messenger stood. Royal blue and gold uniform. The King's seal on his chest. And behind him, a dozen royal guards in polished armor, their weapons drawn and ready.
This was real. The crown itself had intervened.
My wolf settled slightly inside me, though it didn't stop watching Magnus. The mate bond pulled at my chest, screaming at me to gather Seraphina up and run. To take her somewhere safe where no one could ever hurt her again.
But I held my ground. Running now would be the worst possible move. The messenger stepped forward, his boots crunching on debris and broken stone. He was older, maybe fifty, with gray streaking his dark hair. His face was lined but his eyes were sharp, taking in the destruction around him with practiced assessment.
"I am Royal Messenger Aldric," he announced, his voice carrying across the courtyard with trained projection. "Acting on behalf of His Majesty King Aldwin the Third. I bring resolution to the matter of Lady Seraphina Thornfield."
Behind me, I heard Seraphina's sharp intake of breath. She'd shifted back to human form at some point, her ruined clothes barely covering her. I wanted to give her my cloak, but moving now felt dangerous.
Magnus's face darkened. Blood still seeped from his throat wound, but he stood straight, projecting authority despite his injuries. "This is none of the King's concern. The betrothal is a private matter between noble houses."
"On the contrary, Lord Magnus." Aldric's tone was polite but firm. "When nobility is involved, particularly when violence and death follow, it becomes very much the King's concern."
Magnus's jaw clenched. I could see him calculating, trying to figure out how to spin this in his favor.
Aldric reached into his uniform and withdrew a scroll sealed with gold wax. The King's personal seal. My heart started pounding harder. Whatever was written on that parchment could save Seraphina's life or condemn her.
"Let me be clear about something first," Aldric said, looking directly at Magnus. "The crown has been watching your activities for some time, Lord Magnus. The destroyed villages. The murdered travelers. The convenient fires that seem to follow you wherever you go."
"Baseless accusations," Magnus said coldly.
"Are they?" Aldric broke the seal on the scroll with deliberate slowness. "We'll see."
He unrolled the parchment and began to read. His voice carried clearly across the silent courtyard.
"By order of His Majesty King Aldwin the Third, Sovereign of the Realm and Keeper of Justice. Upon investigation of Lord Magnus Blackclaw's claim to Lady Seraphina Thornfield, evidence has been presented suggesting the betrothal contract was signed under duress."
"That's a lie," Magnus interrupted. "Lord Thornfield signed willingly."
Aldric continued reading as if Magnus hadn't spoken. "Furthermore, testimony has been gathered indicating Lord Magnus Blackclaw may have been directly involved in the destruction of House Thornfield and the deaths of Lord Elias Thornfield, Lady Helena Thornfield, and their children."
My breath caught. They had testimony. Actual evidence. Magnus snarled, and for a moment I thought he might shift and attack the messenger right there. But the royal guards stepped forward, hands on their weapons. Even wounded and desperate, Magnus wasn't stupid enough to assault a crown messenger.
"These are lies," Magnus said, his voice tight with barely controlled rage. "Fabrications designed to undermine my legal rights."
"The investigation is ongoing," Aldric said calmly. "Witnesses are being questioned under truth oath. Evidence is being examined. The full truth will come to light in time."
"Then what?" Magnus demanded. "You're accusing me of murder based on rumors and speculation?"
"I'm not accusing you of anything. Yet." Aldric's eyes were cold. "However, given the serious nature of these allegations, the King has made a determination regarding the betrothal contract."
This was it. The moment that would decide everything.
Aldric read from the scroll again. "The betrothal contract between House Blackclaw and House Thornfield is hereby suspended pending full royal inquiry. Lady Seraphina Thornfield is placed under royal protection and may not be claimed, approached, or contacted by any party until the investigation concludes."
Relief hit me so hard I almost staggered. Royal protection. She was safe. The King himself had declared it.
Behind me, Seraphina made a sound between a laugh and a sob. I heard her collapse, probably from sheer emotional exhaustion as much as physical wounds.
Around the courtyard, reactions varied. Fort Velmoor's defenders cheered. Some of Magnus's soldiers looked relieved, clearly uncomfortable with their master's methods. Others looked angry, loyal to Magnus despite everything.
Magnus himself stood perfectly still. His face had gone blank, emotionless. Somehow that was more terrifying than his rage.
"Royal protection," Magnus said slowly. His voice was quiet, almost conversational. "The King thinks a piece of parchment will stop me."
"It's not a piece of parchment," Aldric corrected. "It's a royal decree, backed by the full authority of the crown. Violating it is treason. The penalty is death."
Magnus laughed. The sound was wrong, chilling. It raised the hair on the back of my neck and made my wolf growl low in my chest.
"The King can investigate all he wants," Magnus said. "He can write all the decrees he pleases. But some things transcend royal authority."
He turned, his eyes finding Seraphina behind our protective circle. I moved to block his view, but his gaze seemed to pierce right through me.
"She's already marked," Magnus continued. "By me. By fate. By blood debt owed for her family's betrayal. No decree changes that. No investigation erases three years of hunting, of claiming what's mine."
"Lady Seraphina is under royal protection," Aldric repeated firmly. "Leave now, Lord Magnus. Before this situation escalates further."
"Oh, I'll leave." Magnus's smile was terrible. "I'll even respect this investigation. Play by the King's rules. For now."
He took a step toward us. The royal guards raised their weapons. Captain Brannor shouted orders. Every defender in the courtyard prepared to fight.
But Magnus stopped. He shifted to his black wolf form, blood still matting his fur. His eyes, even in wolf form, remained fixed on Seraphina.
"Run all you want, little bird," Magnus's voice came out despite his wolf throat, that same impossible speech Seraphina had managed earlier. "Hide behind royal protection. Behind your new pack. Behind these foolish boys who think they can save you."
He padded forward slowly. The royal guards moved to intercept, but Magnus wasn't attacking. Just walking closer, his massive form radiating menace.
"I'll be waiting when that protection expires," Magnus said. "And it will expire. Investigations end. Decrees get overturned. Kings die and new ones take their place."
He was five feet from our defensive line now. Close enough that I could smell the blood on him, see the intelligence burning in his wolf eyes.
"And when that day comes," Magnus continued, his gaze boring into Seraphina, "when you're no longer protected by crown or fort or pack. When you're alone again, like you've always been. I'll find you."
He shifted back to human form. Blood streamed down his chest from the throat wound Seraphina had given him. He pressed one hand against it almost absently.
"Next time, there will be no rescue," Magnus said quietly. "No convenient messenger. No noble friends willing to die for you. Just you and me, settling what should have been settled three years ago."
"Get out," Aldric commanded. "Now. Before I have you arrested for threatening someone under royal protection."
Magnus smiled. "I'm not threatening. I'm making a promise."
He turned and walked toward the gates. His surviving soldiers fell in behind him, a ragged and defeated force. But Magnus himself moved with confidence, like he'd won instead of lost.
At the gates, he paused. Looked back one final time.
"Enjoy your freedom while it lasts, little bird," he called out. "I'm a patient man. And I always collect what's owed to me."
Then he was gone, disappearing into the forest beyond the fort. His soldiers followed, and slowly the tension in the courtyard began to drain away.
But I couldn't relax. Magnus's words echoed in my head. He was right about one thing, investigations did end. Royal protection wouldn't last forever.
And when it expired, Magnus would come back.
I turned to Seraphina. She'd pulled herself into a sitting position, her arms wrapped around her knees. Tears streamed down her face, though she was smiling.
"Is it over?" she whispered. "Is it really over?"
I wanted to say yes. Wanted to tell her she was safe now, that Magnus could never hurt her again.
But I couldn't lie to her.
"For now," I said quietly, kneeling beside her. "You're safe for now."
Her smile faded. She understood what I wasn't saying. This was a reprieve, not a solution. Magnus would wait out the investigation, plan his next move, and when the time was right, he'd come for her again.
Unless we found a way to stop him permanently.
Aldric approached us, the scroll still in his hands. "Lady Seraphina Thornfield?"
Seraphina looked up, wiping at her tears. "Yes?"
"By order of the King, you're to return to the capital for your own protection. A royal escort will take you there within the week."
"No," Seraphina said immediately. "I'm not leaving."
Aldric's eyebrows rose. "The capital is the safest place for you."
"I said no." Seraphina's voice strengthened. "I've spent three years running. I'm done running. If Magnus wants me, he'll have to face me here. With my pack."
She looked around at all of us. At me, Talon, Aelis, Elias. At the fort's defenders who'd stood with her.
"These people are my family now," Seraphina said. "I'm not abandoning them."
Aldric studied her for a long moment. Then he nodded slowly. "Very well. The royal protection extends wherever you are. But Lady Seraphina?"
"Yes?"
"Magnus Blackclaw is dangerous. More dangerous than you know. The investigation has uncovered things. Terrible things." Aldric's expression was grim. "Don't underestimate him. And don't assume royal protection will keep you safe forever."
"I won't," Seraphina promised.
Aldric bowed and withdrew, taking his guards with him. The courtyard slowly began to clear as soldiers attended to the wounded and started repairs.
I stayed beside Seraphina, my hand finding hers. The mate bond hummed between us, stronger now after the battle. After everything.
"Kieran?" Seraphina's voice was small.
"Yeah?"
"Thank you. For standing with me. For protecting me."
I squeezed her hand gently. "Always. That's what pack does."
She leaned against my shoulder, exhausted beyond words. Around us, Fort Velmoor began the long process of healing.
But Magnus's final words lingere
d in my mind like poison.
I'll be waiting.
This wasn't over. Not by a long shot.
