White Wolf's Fury
White Wolf's Fury
POV: Seth
Fighting as a wolf was nothing like fighting as a human. As a human, Seraphina had trained with precision. Calculated strikes. Defensive stances. Everything measured and controlled.
As a wolf, there was no calculation. Only instinct. Raw, primal instinct that exploded through her like wildfire.
Her body knew what to do before her mind could catch up. Her paws found purchase on blood-slicked stones. Her muscles coiled and released with perfect timing. Her jaws snapped at vulnerable points without conscious thought.
Three years of suppression poured out in a torrent of fury. Magnus came at her in his black wolf form, jaws wide. Seraphina ducked under his lunge, faster than she'd ever moved as a human. Her white fur made her hard to track, a blur of movement that seemed to shimmer in the firelight.
She twisted, raking her claws across Magnus's exposed flank. Red bloomed against black fur. Magnus snarled and spun, but she was already moving, dancing away from his counterattack.
This. This was what she'd been denying for three years. This power. This freedom.
Magnus charged again, trying to use his superior weight and experience. But Seraphina's wolf was agile, slipping around him like water. She darted in, bit at his back leg, then retreated before he could retaliate.
"Stop running!" Magnus's growl somehow formed words. "Fight me properly!"
But Seraphina's wolf understood what her human mind had taken years to learn. She didn't have to fight Magnus on his terms. She could be faster, smarter, make him chase her until he made a mistake.
She feinted left, then lunged right. Her jaws found his shoulder, biting deep. Magnus howled, twisting violently. He caught her side with his claws, opening four parallel gashes.
Pain blazed through Seraphina. She released him, leaping backward. Blood matted her white fur, but her wolf barely noticed. The wounds were already healing, white light knitting flesh back together.
They circled each other, both breathing hard. The courtyard had become their arena. Soldiers from both sides pressed back against walls, giving them room.
This is for Mother, Seraphina's wolf thought. For Father. For Lydia and Marcus and everyone else you murdered.
She attacked with renewed fury. No more dancing, no more evasion. Pure aggression.
Her claws tore at Magnus's face. Her teeth found his ear and ripped. He countered with brutal efficiency, his jaws clamping onto her front leg. They went down together, rolling across the blood-soaked stones. A tangle of black and white fur, snapping jaws, and rage.
Magnus's weight pressed down on her. His experience showed as he pinned her, using his body to immobilize hers. His jaws went for her throat.
Seraphina twisted desperately. His teeth scraped her neck but didn't find a purchase. She kicked with her back legs, raking his stomach with her claws. Magnus's grip loosened. She surged upward, throwing him off through sheer strength. They separated, both bleeding from dozens of wounds now.
Blood covered the courtyard. Black blood from Magnus. Red blood from Seraphina. Mixed together in pools that reflected the burning buildings. Seraphina's wolf panted. Exhaustion pulled at her limbs. Healing took energy, and she'd healed so many wounds already. How much longer could she keep this up?
Magnus shifted back to human form. He pressed one hand against the deep scratches on his stomach, blood seeping between his fingers. His face was a mask of rage.
"You're better than I expected," he said, breathing hard. "But you're slowing down. I can see it."
Seraphina shifted too, her human form swaying with fatigue. "So are you."
"The difference is, I know how to pace myself." Magnus drew his knife again, the blade gleaming red in the firelight. "You're burning through your energy like a candle. Soon you'll have nothing left."
He wasn't wrong. Seraphina could feel her strength waning. Every breath was effort. Every movement took conscious thought now instead of flowing naturally.
"I don't need to last forever," Seraphina said. "Just long enough to kill you."
Magnus laughed. "Bold words from someone who can barely stand."
They stared at each other across the blood-stained stones. Neither moved. Both waited for the other to make the first mistake.
Then Magnus's expression shifted. Something calculating entered his eyes. "You know what your problem is?" he said conversationally. "You care too much. All this fury, all this power, and you waste it trying to protect people who can't protect themselves."
Seraphina's hands clenched. "They're not weak."
"No?" Magnus's smile was cruel. "Then why have you spent three years running to keep them safe? Why surrender yourself just now to save that boy?"
"Because that's what decent people do. Something you'd never understand."
"Decent." Magnus spat the word like poison. "Decent people die, little bird. They die protecting others who aren't worth the sacrifice. They die alone and forgotten while monsters like me build empires."
"I'd rather die decent than live as a monster."
"You'll get your wish soon enough."
Magnus attacked.
He moved faster than before, fueled by desperation and rage. His knife flashed toward Seraphina's throat.
She shifted mid-dodge, her white wolf form appearing in a burst of light. The knife scraped across her shoulder instead of her neck. Pain, but not fatal. Magnus shifted too. Black wolf met white wolf again, and they collided with savage violence. This time Magnus fought differently. Dirtier. He went for her eyes with his claws. Snapped at her legs, trying to cripple rather than kill. Used every brutal trick he'd learned in decades of warfare.
Seraphina's wolf screamed fury. This was the monster who'd murdered her family. Who'd made her watch while her mother died. Who'd burned her home and laughed about it later.
Her jaws found Magnus's throat. Finally, finally. She bit down with all her strength, tasting blood and flesh.
Magnus howled. His entire body convulsed, trying to throw her off. His claws tore at her sides, her face, anywhere he could reach.
Seraphina held on. Her jaws locked tighter, crushing down on his windpipe. Blood filled her mouth, hot and coppery. Magnus's struggles grew weaker.
Almost. Almost done.
Then Magnus did something desperate. He threw his entire weight sideways, rolling them both toward the nearest wall. Seraphina saw it coming but couldn't let go. Not when she was so close to ending this.
They hit the stone wall together. The impact drove the air from Seraphina's lungs. Her jaws loosened involuntarily.
Magnus tore free, stumbling away with blood pouring from his torn throat. He shifted back to human form, one hand clamped over the wound. His eyes were wide with shock and pain.
Seraphina shifted too, trying to catch her breath. Her entire body ached. The wall had cracked several of her ribs. She could feel them grinding together with each breath.
"You almost had me," Magnus gasped. Blood leaked between his fingers. "I underestimated you again."
Seraphina tried to stand. Her legs wouldn't cooperate. Too much damage, too much healing, too much exhaustion. She fell to her knees.
Magnus saw his opportunity. He limped toward her, still clutching his throat with one hand. His other hand found his knife where it had fallen nearby.
"Should have killed me when you had the chance," he said.
He stood over her, knife raised. Preparing the killing blow.
Seraphina looked up at him. Too tired to move. Too broken to shift again. Was this really how it ended? After everything?
Movement caught her eye. Behind Magnus, a shape was moving. Large. Fast.
Gray fur.
Kieran's wolf form crashed into Magnus from the side. The impact sent Magnus flying, his knife clattering away across the stones.
Kieran stood between Seraphina and Magnus, his gray wolf form battered and bleeding but standing firm. His broken ribs should have made shifting impossible. The pain must have been agonizing.
But he'd done it anyway.
"You want her?" Kieran's wolf form growled. Somehow, impossibly, the words came out clear despite his wolf throat. "You'll have to go through me. Through all of us."
More shapes moved around the courtyard. Seraphina's vision blurred, but she could make them out. Talon, limping but shifting into his brown wolf form. Aelis, her smaller rust-colored wolf taking position beside Kieran. Even Elias, whose black-and-gray wolf was small but snarling with fierce determination.
They formed a circle around Seraphina's fallen form. A protective ring of wolves, all of them injured, all of them exhausted, but none of them backing down.
"Fools," Magnus spat. He'd shifted back to human form, still holding his bleeding throat. "You think numbers matter? I'll kill you all."
"Try it," Kieran said. His wolf's eyes blazed silver. "You're wounded. Tired. And you'll have to go through every single one of us to reach her."
More wolves joined the circle. Soldiers from the fort, inspired by the cadets' stand. A dozen wolves. Two dozen. More.
All of them positioned between Magnus and Seraphina.
All of them willing to die to protect the white wolf.
Magnus stared at them. For the first time since the battle began, genuine uncertainty crossed his face. He was one man, wounded and tired, facing an army that had found something worth fighting for.
"This isn't over," Magnus said. His voice was rough, damaged by Seraphina's attack on his throat. "I'll come back. I'll bring a real army. And I'll burn this entire fort to ashes."
"Then we'll be waiting," Captain Brannor's voice rang out from the wall. "And next time, you won't leave alive."
Magnus's eyes swept the circle of wolves one more time. They landed on Seraphina, who'd managed to prop herself up on her elbows. Blood covered her torn clothes. Exhaustion made her shake.
But she met his gaze without flinching.
"Run while you can, little bird," Magnus said softly. "Because when I come back, there won't be anywhere left to hide."
He shifted one final time, his black wolf form limping toward the broken gates. His surviving soldiers f
ollowed, retreating into the forest beyond. The siege was over. For now.
