The White Wolf
The White Wolf
POV: Kieran
Kieran had seen wolves before. Hundreds of them. Common gray wolves, brown wolves, even the rare black wolves that marked alphas and warriors of exceptional strength. But he had never seen anything like this.
Seraphina's wolf form towered over the courtyard, massive beyond belief. Nearly alpha-sized, maybe larger. Her fur was pure white, so bright it seemed to glow in the firelight from the burning buildings. Not the dirty cream of winter wolves or the pale gray of moon-blessed hunters. Pure. Pristine. White as fresh snow.
She was beautiful. Terrifying. A creature pulled from ancient legends and made flesh.
Magnus stumbled backward, and for the first time since Kieran had met the warlord, genuine shock crossed his face. "Impossible," Magnus breathed. "Your bloodline was supposed to be broken. The white wolves died out generations ago."
The white wolf's lips pulled back from her teeth. Fangs the size of daggers gleamed in her mouth. A growl rumbled from her chest, so deep and primal that it made the stones beneath their feet vibrate.
She didn't attack. Instead, she moved, placing her massive body between Magnus and the fort. Between the warlord and everyone she'd been protecting all along.
Kieran's heart clenched. Even now, even transformed into this legendary creature, she was trying to protect them. Magnus's shock faded quickly, replaced by something worse. Hunger. Greed. His eyes traveled over Seraphina's wolf form with the look of a man appraising a prize horse.
"Magnificent," Magnus said, his voice thick with desire. "I knew you carried white wolf blood, but this? You're perfect. Absolutely perfect."
Seraphina snarled again, louder this time. The sound echoed off the walls.
"Do you understand what you are?" Magnus continued, starting to circle. "White wolves are sacred. Legendary. Their power is absolute. Nations would go to war for the chance to possess even one, and here you are. Mine by legal right. My bride. My property."
The white wolf's hackles rose. Silver-white light flickered around her massive form, responding to her rage.
"We'll breed a new dynasty together," Magnus said. "Pure white wolves under my control. An empire built on your bloodline. You'll give me sons and daughters who'll reshape this entire realm."
Kieran's stomach turned. Magnus wasn't talking about a wife. He was talking about a breeding animal. A tool to be used and controlled.
"Never." The word came out as a growl, but somehow Kieran understood it. Seraphina's voice, filtered through her wolf's throat.
Magnus's expression hardened. "Then I'll break you first. It's more fun that way."
He shifted. One moment Magnus stood in human form. The next, a massive black wolf took his place. Easily twice the size of a normal wolf, heavily muscled, with scars visible even through his dark fur. An alpha wolf, battle-tested and brutal.
But even Magnus's impressive black wolf looked smaller next to Seraphina's brilliance. Less imposing. Like a shadow trying to block out the sun. They began to circle each other. Two massive wolves, one white as snow and one black as midnight, moving in a deadly dance.
Kieran tried to stand. His legs shook. Blood loss and pain made his vision swim, but he had to help. Had to do something.
"Stay down, you idiot," Aelis hissed, grabbing his arm. "You can barely stand."
"I can't just watch," Kieran gasped. His wolf clawed inside him, howling to help their mate. Because that's what she was, what she'd been becoming. His mate. His bond. His.
"Kieran." Talon's voice came from nearby, weak with pain. He'd dragged himself closer, one hand clutching his broken ribs. "You can't fight him. Not like this. You'll just get yourself killed."
"I don't care."
"She will." Talon pointed at Seraphina with his free hand. "Look at her. She's protecting us. If you throw your life away, you make her sacrifice meaningless."
Kieran wanted to argue. Wanted to shift and launch himself at Magnus anyway. But Talon was right. In his current state, he'd be dead in seconds. And Seraphina would blame herself.
So instead, he watched. Helpless. Useless.
"Seraphina," he whispered.
The white wolf's ear twitched. She glanced back at him, just for a second.
In her wolf's eyes, silver-white and ancient, Kieran saw intelligence. Recognition. She knew him. Knew all of them. This wasn't some mindless beast. This was still Seraphina, just in a different form.
And in those eyes, he saw something else. Something that made his chest ache.
Goodbye. She thought she was going to die here. Thought this was her last stand.
"No," Kieran said louder. "Seraphina, no! You can win this! You're stronger than him!"
But was she? Magnus had decades of experience fighting in wolf form. Seraphina had suppressed her wolf for three years. She was powerful, yes. Legendary, even. But power without training was just potential waiting to be crushed.
Magnus seemed to think the same thing. His black wolf's lips pulled back in what might have been a smile. He charged. Seraphina met him halfway. They collided with a sound like thunder. The impact sent shockwaves through the courtyard. Soldiers stumbled. Nearby walls cracked.
Fangs flashed. Claws raked. The two massive wolves became a blur of black and white, rolling and tearing at each other with savage intensity. Magnus got his jaws around Seraphina's front leg and bit down hard. Even from here, Kieran heard bones crack. Seraphina's howl of pain cut through him like a blade.
But she didn't give up. White light exploded from her body again, that raw power that had no form or control. It blasted Magnus away, sent him skidding across the blood-slicked stones.
Seraphina scrambled upright. Her leg dangled uselessly, but even as Kieran watched, white light surrounded the injury. The bones snapped back into place. Flesh knitted together. In seconds, the wound was gone.
"Incredible," someone breathed behind Kieran. Captain Brannor had descended from the wall, staring at the white wolf with awe. "I've never seen healing that fast. Not even from the strongest alphas."
Magnus regained his feet. He shook his massive head, then shifted back to human form. Blood streamed from cuts on his arms and chest where Seraphina's claws had found purchase.
"You heal fast," Magnus called out. "But healing takes energy, little bird. How long can you keep that up? How many times can you knit yourself back together before you collapse from exhaustion?"
Seraphina didn't answer. She remained in wolf form, her white fur bristling, her stance protective.
"You've never been trained," Magnus continued, starting to circle again. "You don't know the first thing about fighting as a wolf. Every move you make is instinct and rage. Powerful, yes. But sloppy. Predictable."
He was baiting her. Trying to make her angry enough to attack recklessly.
Don't fall for it, Kieran thought desperately. Don't let him control the fight. But Seraphina's growl deepened. She was angry. Three years of running, of hiding, of watching people die because of her. All that rage had nowhere to go except at Magnus.
"That's it," Magnus said softly. "Get angry. Lose control. Make this easy for me."
Seraphina lunged.
Magnus shifted mid-charge, his black wolf form meeting her. This time he was ready. He twisted aside at the last second, letting Seraphina's momentum carry her past him. His jaws clamped onto her back leg as she passed.
Seraphina yelped. She tried to turn, but Magnus's weight dragged her down. They hit the ground hard, Magnus on top, his jaws still locked on her leg.
"No!" Kieran tried to surge forward. Aelis and Garrick held him back. Magnus's jaws tightened. More bones cracked. Seraphina thrashed, but Magnus had position and experience. He knew how to pin an opponent, how to use his weight to maximum advantage.
White light flickered around Seraphina, but weaker now. Magnus was right. Healing took energy, and she'd already done it multiple times. She was tiring.
"Give up," Magnus growled, his voice somehow carrying even in wolf form. "Submit. Accept your place and I'll end this mercifully."
Seraphina's response was to twist violently, wrenching her leg free at the cost of more torn flesh. She rolled away, putting distance between them. Both wolves circled again, breathing hard. Blood matted both their coats now. Black and white mixed with red.
"Stubborn," Magnus said, shifting back to human form again. He favored his left side where Seraphina had raked him earlier. "I can respect that. But stubbornness won't save you."
"Neither will threats," Seraphina's voice rang out. She'd shifted back to human form too, standing in the ruins of her torn clothing. Blood streamed down her leg but she didn't fall. "I'm done running from you, Magnus. Done hiding. You want me? You'll have to kill me to get me."
Magnus's smile was cold. "That can be arranged."
"But you won't." Seraphina's laugh was bitter. "Because I'm too valuable dead. You need me alive. Need my bloodline. That's your weakness."
Magnus's expression flickered. Just for a moment, uncertainty crossed his face.
"You've spent three years hunting me," Seraphina continued. "Destroyed towns. Killed hundreds. All to possess something you can never truly have. Because I'll never submit to you. Never stop fighting. Every day for the rest of your miserable life, you'll have to watch your back, wondering if today is the day I finally tear your throat out."
"Big words from someone who can barely stand," Magnus said.
"Then prove me wrong." Seraphina spread her arms wide. "Kill me. End this. Or are you too afraid of losing your precious breeding stock?"
The courtyard had gone silent. Everyone watched the standoff, barely breathing.
Magnus's jaw clenched. His hands curled into fists. "You think you're clever. Trying to bait me into making a mistake."
"I think you're a coward," Seraphina said. "I think you hide behind armies and political contracts because you know that in a fair fight, you'd lose."
Magnus's eyes blazed. "Careful, little bird."
"Or what? You'll hurt me? You're already trying that." Seraphina took a limping step forward. "You killed my family. Burned my home. Hunted me across half the realm. What else can you possibly do to me that's worse than what you've already done?"
"I can make you watch while I slaughter everyone here," Magnus said softly. "Starting with that boy who thinks he's your mate."
Kieran's blood ran cold. Seraphina's expression cracked. Just for a moment, fear broke through her defiant mask.
Magnus noticed. His smile returned. "Ah. There it is. You do care about them. About him especially." He turned toward Kieran. "Tell me, little bird. How much are their lives worth to you?"
"Don't," Seraphina whispered.
"Will you submit if I spare him?" Magnus took a step toward Kieran. "Will you come willingly, obediently, if I let your friends live?"
Seraphina's shoulders slumped. The fight seemed to drain out of her. "Yes," she said quietly. "Yes, I'll do whatever you want. Just don't hurt them."
"Seraphina, no!" Kieran shouted.
But Magnus was already moving. He crossed the distance to Seraphina in three quick strides, reaching for her.
And Seraphina moved too.
Her shift was instant, born of pure instinct. One moment she stood in human form. The next, the massive white wolf lunged, jaws open wide. Magnus barely got his arm up in time. Seraphina's fangs clamped down on his forearm instead of his throat. Bones crunched. Magnus screamed.
It had been a trick. A beautiful, desperate trick. Seraphina had pretended to surrender, waited until Magnus got close and overconfident, then struck. They went down together, rolling and snarling. Magnus shifted mid-roll, his black wolf tearing at Seraphina's side. She refused to let go of his arm, her jaws locked tight.
Around them, both armies stirred uncertainly. Magnus's soldiers looked to their commanders. The fort's defenders waited for orders.
"Hold!" Captain Brannor shouted. "Let them finish this!"
The two wolves broke apart, both bleeding heavily now. They circled again, but slower. Exhaustion weighed on both of them.
"Clever," Magnus panted, back in human form. His arm hung at an odd angle, clearly broken. "I underestimated you."
Seraphina shifted to human form too. She swayed on her feet, pale from blood loss. "You always have."
"Not anymore." Magnus's good arm moved to his belt, drawing a long knife. "If you won't come willingly, I'll take you broken. Legs shattered so you can't run. Arms broken so you can't fight. You'll still breed. That's all that matters."
Kieran's wolf roared inside him. No. Not happening. Not while he still drew breath.
He gathered what remained of his strength and began to shift. Magnus noticed. He looked at Kieran, then back at Seraphina. "Your little mate wants to play the hero. How touching."
"Leave him alone," Seraphina said.
"Make me."
Magnus attacked. Seraphina met h
im halfway. They collided with a sound like thunder, and the true battle finally began.
