The Sacrifice
The Sacrifice
POV: Seth
Every instinct Seraphina possessed screamed at her to run. To shift, to flee into the forest, to disappear like she'd done for three years. Her wolf clawed at the inside of her mind, desperate to break free and escape. But she couldn't. Not anymore.
She looked at Kieran, bleeding on his knees with Magnus's sword still hovering near his throat. At Talon, crumpled on the ground clutching his broken ribs. At the fort burning around them, innocent soldiers dying because Magnus wanted to own her. How many more would die if she kept running?
The answer settled in her chest like stone. No more. This ended now.
"Wait," Seraphina said, raising her hands slowly. Weaponless. Surrendering. "I'll go with you."
Magnus's head tilted. His expression shifted from rage to curiosity. "What was that, little bird?"
"I said I'll go with you." Each word felt like swallowing glass. "Just stop this. Stop hurting them."
The courtyard went silent again. Even the crackling flames seemed to quiet, as if the world itself held its breath.
"Seraphina, no!" Kieran's voice cracked. He tried to stand but his leg gave out, reopening the wound on his thigh. Fresh blood streamed down his uniform.
She didn't look at him. Couldn't look at him. If she saw the pain in his eyes, she'd break.
Magnus lowered his sword slowly, his smile returning. That horrible, knowing smile. "Finally accepting your place?"
"If you order your forces to retreat." Seraphina forced herself to take a step forward. Then another. Her legs trembled but held. "If you spare this fort and everyone in it."
Magnus laughed. The sound echoed off the walls, cold and mocking. "You think you're in a position to negotiate?"
"You've been hunting me for three years." Seraphina stopped five feet from him. Close enough to see the blood on his blade. Kieran's blood. "You've destroyed towns, burned villages, killed hundreds of people trying to find me. And now I'm offering myself willingly. That's worth something."
Magnus studied her. His eyes traveled over her face, her stance, looking for weakness. For the lie. Seraphina met his gaze and didn't flinch. Inside, her wolf howled with fury and fear. Outside, she kept her expression calm.
"You'll come without fighting?" Magnus asked.
"Yes."
"You'll acknowledge our marriage contract?"
Her stomach turned. "Yes."
"You'll submit to your place as my wife and property?"
The word 'property' made her want to vomit. But she nodded. Magnus's smile widened. He turned to his forces, raising his voice. "Hear that, boys? The little bird is finally coming home. Stand down. Pull back to the tree line."
"No!" Kieran lunged forward. Aelis and Garrick grabbed him, holding him back even as he struggled. "Seraphina, you can't do this! He's lying! He'll kill everyone anyway!"
"She knows that," Magnus said pleasantly. "Don't you, little bird? You know I might burn this fort to the ground the moment we leave. But you're hoping I won't. Hoping that your sacrifice will mean something."
Seraphina's hands clenched at her sides. "Will it?"
"Maybe." Magnus shrugged. "I'm feeling generous today. Your cooperation has put me in a good mood. So yes, I'll spare the fort. For now."
Around them, Magnus's soldiers began withdrawing. Slowly, reluctantly, but they moved back from the walls. Back from the gates. The immediate assault stopped, though weapons stayed drawn and ready.
Captain Brannor appeared on the wall, his face ashen. He stared down at Seraphina with something like horror mixed with relief. The fort might survive. All it cost was one cadet.
One girl who'd been hiding among them all along.
"Seraphina, please." Kieran's voice broke. "Don't do this. We'll fight. We'll find another way."
She finally looked at him. Really looked at him. Blood matted his dark hair. His uniform was shredded and soaked through. He could barely stand, held up by Aelis and Garrick, but his eyes burned with desperate determination.
Something in her chest cracked. The careful walls she'd built around her heart started crumbling.
"There is no other way," she said softly. "Not one that doesn't end with all of you dead."
"I don't care," Kieran said. "I'd rather die fighting than watch you go with him."
"I know." Seraphina tried to smile. Her lips trembled. "That's why I have to do this. Take care of each other, okay? Take care of Talon and Elias and everyone. Promise me."
"Seraphina.."
"Promise me, Kieran."
He stared at her. Something raw and agonizing passed between them. That connection she'd felt growing stronger over weeks, the thing she'd been too afraid to name.
"I promise," Kieran whispered. Seraphina nodded. She turned back to Magnus, squaring her shoulders. "I'm ready."
Magnus's smile was triumphant. Possessive. He reached for her, his large hand extending toward her arm.
"Finally," he said. "Three years of hunting. Three years of your pathetic attempts at hiding. And here you are, coming to me like a good little.."
His hand closed around her arm. And everything exploded. White light erupted from Seraphina's body. Pure, blinding, like staring into the sun. She felt it tear through her, felt every wall she'd built around her wolf shatter like glass. The transformation that she'd suppressed for three years, the power she'd hidden and denied and forced down, finally broke free.
Pain ripped through her. Beautiful, terrible pain. Her bones cracked and reformed. Her skin burned as fur erupted across her body. Her vision blurred, then sharpened to impossible clarity. Magnus stumbled back, his hand releasing her arm. He raised his other hand to shield his eyes from the light.
Seraphina fell forward onto hands that became paws. Her back arched as her spine elongated. Her face pushed outward into a muzzle. Claws burst from her fingers. Her clothes tore away as her body expanded, growing larger and larger.
The light intensified. White fire that consumed everything, turned the world into blank brightness. And then it was over.
The light faded. The courtyard came back into focus, every detail sharp and clear. Seraphina could smell everything, blood, smoke, fear, sweat. She could hear hearts beating all around her, fast with shock and terror.
She stood on four legs now. Massive legs, easily twice the size of a normal wolf. White fur covered her body, gleaming like fresh snow in sunlight. Power thrummed through her muscles, ancient and primal. Her wolf. Finally, completely free. Seraphina turned her massive head toward Magnus. The warlord had fallen back several steps, his expression frozen between shock and something else. Recognition. Hunger.
"Magnificent," Magnus breathed. "Even more beautiful than the legends said."
Seraphina's lips pulled back from her teeth. A snarl built in her chest, deep and rumbling. The sound made even Magnus's seasoned warriors step back nervously.
"Three years you've been hiding this from me," Magnus said. His shock was already fading, replaced by that calculating gleam. "Three years of wasted time when you could have been at my side, breeding the next generation of white wolves. Do you have any idea what we could create together?"
The snarl grew louder. Seraphina's haunches tensed, muscles coiling. Magnus noticed. His smile returned. "Oh, you want to fight now? Now that you've finally embraced what you are? How delightful. But little bird, you're not trained. You've been suppressing your wolf for three years. You don't know how to use that power."
He was right. Seraphina could feel it. The strength flooding her body was intoxicating, overwhelming, but she had no idea how to control it. Her movements felt clumsy, uncoordinated. She'd never learned to fight in wolf form. But she didn't care. Magnus had killed her family. Had hunted her across half the realm. Had hurt Kieran, hurt Talon, hurt everyone she cared about.
And he thought she would just surrender? Let him drag her back to his keep and turn her into a breeding animal?
No. Never again. Seraphina launched herself forward with a roar that shook the courtyard walls. Her massive body flew through the air, claws extended, jaws open wide.
Magnus shifted. One moment he stood in human form. The next, a huge black wolf met her charge. They collided mid-air in an explosion of fur and fangs. Magnus was bigger, more experienced, brutal in his efficiency. His jaws clamped onto her shoulder and tore.
Pain blazed through Seraphina. She twisted, raking her claws across his side. Black fur came away under her claws, along with strips of flesh. They hit the ground together and rolled, each trying for position. Magnus's weight pressed down on her, crushing. His teeth found her throat.
No. Not like this. White light exploded from Seraphina again. Raw power, untrained and wild. It blasted Magnus backward, sent him tumbling across the courtyard.
Seraphina scrambled to her feet. Blood dripped from her shoulder and throat, but the wounds were already closing. Healing with supernatural speed.
Magnus regained his feet more slowly. He shook his massive black head, then shifted back to human form. Blood stained his side where she'd clawed him.
"Interesting," he said, breathing hard. "Raw power but no control. Just like I thought."
Around them, the entire fort watched in stunned silence. Both armies had stopped fighting completely, transfixed by the sight of the white wolf and the warlord.
"You can't win, little bird," Magnus continued. "You're strong but untrained. I've been fighting in wolf form longer than you've been alive. You'll tire yourself out, and then I'll take you. Broken and bloodied if necessary."
Seraphina snarled again, primal fury drowning out fear. Magnus's expression hardened. "So be it."
He shifted again, the massive black wolf returning. This time he didn't charge. He circled, patient and predatory, looking for an opening.
Seraphina circled opposite him, her white fur bristling. Her heart hammered against her ribs. She could taste blood in her mouth, smell her own fear mixing with rage.
She was going to die here. Magnus would kill her or capture her, and either way, she'd never be free.
But at least she'd fought back. At least she'd finally stopped running.
At least..
"Seraphina!" Kieran's voice cut through her thoughts. "You're not alone!"
She glanced toward him. Kieran had broken free from Aelis and Garrick. He stood swaying, bare
ly upright, but his eyes blazed silver. And he was starting to shift.
