Hunter and Prey

Hunter and Prey

POV: Kieran

The moment Magnus breached the gate, everything inside me snapped. My wolf roared. A sound that tore through my chest with primal fury. Every instinct I had screamed the same thing over and over. Protect the mate. Kill the threat. Protect the mate. Kill the threat.
"Kieran, no!" Someone grabbed my arm. Talon. "You can't just.."
I shook him off. There was no thought. No strategy. Just pure instinct driving me forward. I ran three steps and leaped from the wall.
Twenty feet down. I shifted mid-air, human form flowing into wolf. Black fur rippled across my skin. My hands became paws. My jaw lengthened into a muzzle full of teeth.
I hit the courtyard hard. Stone cracked under the impact. Pain shot through my legs but I ignored it. Already moving. Already charging toward the shattered gate where Magnus's elite guard was pouring through.
Around me, other defenders rallied. Seeing an alpha wolf leading the charge gave them courage. They formed up behind me, a defensive line between Magnus's forces and the inner fort.
"For Velmoor!" someone shouted.
"Hold the line!"
Wolves crashed together. The courtyard became a writhing mass of fur and teeth and blood. I tore through enemies, not stopping, not slowing. My target was ahead. The massive black wolf standing in the center of chaos like a king surveying his conquest.
Magnus.
I snarled, low and threatening. Every hair on my body stood on end. My wolf was in full control now, driven by the mate bond pulling tight as a bowstring.
Magnus's wolf turned to face me. He was huge. Bigger than any wolf I'd ever seen. Alpha-sized, bred and trained for dominance. Scars covered his muzzle, evidence of dozens of fights. Dozens of victories.
We circled each other. The battle raged around us but we might as well have been alone. Everything else faded to background noise. Then Magnus shifted. The transformation was smooth, practiced. One moment a wolf, the next a man standing tall in dark armor. His face was handsome in a cruel way. Strong jaw. Cold eyes. A smile that promised pain.
"Well," he said, his voice carrying despite the chaos. "The famous Kieran Stormbane. I've heard so much about you."
His tone dripped with false politeness. Like we were meeting at a social function instead of facing off in battle. I shifted too, standing to face him as a man. My sword was still strapped to my back. I drew it slowly, the steel singing as it cleared the scabbard.
"Step aside, boy." Magnus's smile widened. "I'm here for what belongs to me. This doesn't concern you."
"Nothing here belongs to you." My voice came out rough, barely human. The wolf was still too close to the surface.
"Doesn't it?" Magnus tilted his head, amused. "I can smell her, you know. My little bird. She's here, hiding somewhere in this fort like a frightened dove." He took a step closer. "Lady Seraphina Thornfield. My bride. My property by law and contract."
Rage flooded through me. Hot and consuming. "She's not property. And she's not yours."
"The High Council would disagree. So would pack law." Magnus gestured casually at the burning fort around us. "But I'm not here to debate legality. I'm here to collect what was stolen from me."
"She ran. That should tell you everything you need to know."
"It tells me she's frightened and confused. That she needs guidance. Discipline." His eyes gleamed with dark promise. "I'll provide both once she's back where she belongs."
My grip tightened on my sword. "You'll never touch her again."
"Bold words." Magnus drew his own blade. It was massive, dark steel that looked like it had tasted blood a thousand times. "But unless you want this fort burned to ash with everyone inside, you'll hand her over. Last chance. Walk away. Let me take what's mine and I'll spare the rest of you."
I thought about Seraphina. About the terror in her eyes when she spoke Magnus's name. About her family murdered. Her brother thrown from a tower. Three months of running and hiding and being afraid every single moment. About the mate bond forming between us. The connection that said she was mine to protect. Mine to defend. Mine to die for if necessary.
"Come and take her then." I raised my sword. "If you can."
For one heartbeat, Magnus just looked at me. Really looked. Assessing. Calculating. Then understanding flickered across his face.
"Ah," he said softly. "I see. You're bonding with her. Or trying to." He laughed, the sound cold and cruel. "How absolutely tragic. A half-formed bond with a woman who's already legally mine. Do you have any idea how much that's going to hurt when I tear her away from you?"
"You won't get the chance."
"Oh, I will." Magnus's smile turned vicious. "But first, I'll paint these walls with your blood. I want my little bird to watch what happens to fools who try to protect her. I want her to see exactly what her defiance costs."
He attacked. No warning. No preparation. Just explosive speed that shouldn't be possible for someone his size. I barely got my blade up in time. Steel crashed against steel with a sound like thunder. The impact sent shockwaves up my arm. I staggered back, already off balance.
Magnus pressed the advantage. His sword came at me in a blur of strikes. High. Low. From the side. Each one with enough force to shatter bone.
I parried desperately. Training took over where thought failed. Block. Deflect. Dodge. My sword moved on instinct, meeting his attacks with mechanical precision.
But it wasn't enough. Magnus was stronger. Faster. More experienced. Each exchange pushed me back. Each clash of blades sent pain through my arms.
"Is this the best the academy produces?" Magnus taunted between strikes. "I expected more from Seraphina's chosen protector."
I didn't waste breath answering. Saved it for fighting. For surviving. He lunged. I dodged left. His blade whistled past my ear, close enough to feel the wind. I countered with a slash at his ribs. He blocked it easily, then kicked me in the chest.
I flew backward. Hit the ground hard. Air exploded from my lungs. Before I could recover, Magnus was on me. His boot pressed down on my chest, pinning me. His sword pointed at my throat.
"Pathetic," he said. "This is what stands between me and my bride? A boy playing soldier?"
Around us, the battle had slowed. Magnus's forces and the fort defenders both watching. Waiting to see how this ended.
"You have spirit though." Magnus pressed down harder. I felt ribs creak under the pressure. "I'll give you that. Foolish, misguided spirit, but spirit nonetheless."
I grabbed his ankle with both hands. Pulled. Twisted. Years of hand-to-hand training combined with desperate strength.
Magnus stumbled. Just barely. Just enough.
I rolled away. Came up with my sword ready. Blood ran from a cut on my forehead I didn't remember getting. Everything hurt. But I was still standing.
"Better," Magnus acknowledged. "But still not good enough."
He came at me again. This time I was ready. I met his strikes with my own. Attack and counter. Blade against blade. We moved through the courtyard, a deadly dance that left bodies in our wake.
I managed to cut him. A slash across his forearm that drew blood. Satisfaction surged through me. Magnus looked at the wound, then at me. "First blood. How exciting."
Then he moved. Faster than before. Like he'd been holding back until now. His sword came from an angle I didn't expect. I tried to block but was too slow. The blade bit into my shoulder, cutting deep. Pain exploded through me. I dropped to one knee. My sword nearly fell from nerveless fingers. Blood soaked through my uniform.
Magnus grabbed me by the hair. Yanked my head back. His blade pressed against my throat. One quick motion and I'd be dead.
"Last words?" he asked mockingly.
I looked up at him. At those cold, cruel eyes. At the face that haunted Seraphina's nightmares.
"She'll never love you," I gasped. "No matter what you do. No matter how hard you try to break her. She'll hate you until her last breath."
Something flickered in Magnus's expression. Rage. Hurt. But it was gone in an instant, replaced by cold amusement.
"Love?" He laughed. "I don't need her to love me. I need her to obey. To submit. To give me the power her white wolf bloodline promises."
He raised his sword for the killing blow.
"That's enough!"
The voice rang across the courtyard. Clear. Strong. Commanding.
Everyone turned.
There, standing at the entrance to the command building, was Seraphina.
Not Seth. Not the disguised cadet. But Lady Seraphina Thornfield in all her nobility. Her hair was still short but she'd discarded the binding. Her true form was visible now. Undeniable.
And her eyes blazed silver-white with barely contained power.
"Let him go, Magnus," she said quietly. "You want me? I'm here. Let him go and I'll come willingly."
"No!" The word tore out of me. "Seraphina, no!"
But she wasn't looking at me. Her eyes were locked on Magnus.
And Magnus was
smiling.
"Hello, little bird," he said softly. "I've missed you."
