Chapter 55
Chapter 55
Mara's POV
The small Italian restaurant felt cozy, warm with the smell of garlic and tomatoes. Daniel had picked it, calling it "neutral territory" for our first official lunch.
My stomach still fluttered with a mix of nerves and a tiny spark of excitement. This was it, the meeting I'd thought about since Daniel first told me about Sienna.
She was already there when Daniel and I arrived, sitting at a table by the window, her back straight, a gentle smile on her face as she looked out.
She wore a simple, elegant dress, nothing flashy, but it suited her quiet strength. She seemed calm, unworried, I was anything but.
My hands felt a little damp, and I had to remind myself to breathe slowly.
This was Daniel's love, the woman who made him glow. And I was... me. A sister still piecing herself back together.
Daniel's hand found mine, giving it a quick, reassuring squeeze. He knew. He always knew.
Sienna turned as we approached, her smile widening. It reached her eyes, making them warm and welcoming.
"Daniel," she said, her voice soft and happy. Then her gaze shifted to me, and her smile didn't dim. "Maya, it's so good to see you again. Please, sit."
I slid into the seat next to Daniel, across from Sienna. "You too, Sienna," I managed, my voice a little tight.
I felt a blush creep up my neck. It was silly, this nervousness, but it was there, a leftover shadow from all the fear and doubt I used to carry.
"It's a lovely spot, Daniel," Sienna remarked, glancing around the restaurant, giving me a moment to settle. "Thank you for picking it."
Daniel just grinned, clearly pleased. "Only the best for my favorite ladies."
We ordered, making small talk about the menu, the weather, the city. Sienna was easy to talk to, asking me about how I was settling in, about my plans.
She wasn't pushy, just genuinely curious. She listened when I spoke, not just waiting for her turn.
"Daniel told me you're quite an artist, Maya," Sienna said, her eyes kind. "That's incredible. Do you have a favorite medium? Or a subject you love to paint?"
"I used to," I admitted, my voice softer. "Landscapes, mostly. But since... well, since everything, it's been hard to find the inspiration. To even pick up a brush." I felt a familiar ache, a ghost of the past.
Sienna nodded slowly, a knowing look in her eyes. "I understand that completely. After Evan, for a long time, my studio just felt... dead. Like all the creativity had been drained out of me. It's hard to make beautiful things when your world feels so ugly."
Her words hit me, a quiet surprise. She understood. Not just the idea of it, but the feeling. She didn't offer empty words of encouragement, she offered shared experience.
"It's like... the colors just aren't there anymore," I confessed, feeling a little braver, "Or maybe they are, but I can't see them."
"They're there," Sienna said softly, her gaze steady. "They're always there. Sometimes, you just have to look harder. Or maybe, find new ones. The ones that come from deeper places. From the scars, even." She smiled, a sad but hopeful twist of her lips. "It's a journey, isn't it? Finding your way back to yourself, after someone tries to steal your light."
Daniel reached across the table, covering Sienna's hand, a silent comfort. I watched them, feeling a warmth spread through me.
It wasn't just about Daniel, it was about this shared understanding, this unexpected connection with Sienna.
She wasn't just Daniel's girlfriend; she was a woman who had walked through fire and emerged with kindness.
"It is a journey," I agreed, a sense of relief washing over me. "A long one."
"And you're doing beautifully on yours, Maya," Sienna affirmed, her eyes sincere. "Daniel tells me how far you've come. He's incredibly proud."
"He's been amazing," I stated, looking at Daniel, who just gave me a soft, reassuring smile. "I wouldn't be here without him. He's my rock."
Sienna's smile deepened. "He's a good man, isn't he? Kind. Loyal. Stubborn, sometimes, but always with the best intentions." Her affection for him was clear in her voice, in her eyes.
We talked for a long time after that, slipping into an easy flow. We found common ground in shared stories about Daniel, little quirks and habits only those close to him would know.
It was like we were building a bridge, piece by piece, across the gap of our different pasts.
Sienna shared a little about her kids, about Leo's passion for engineering, about Zoe's sharp mind and her current struggles.
She spoke of them with such love, even the difficult parts.
"Zoe is a brilliant girl," Sienna mused, a hint of worry in her voice, "But she carries a lot of hurt from her dad. It makes her guard herself, even from people who care about her."
I nodded, feeling a pang of empathy. I knew what it felt like to guard yourself, to be wary of new connections. "It sounds like you're handling it with incredible patience, though," I told her.
"That's not easy."
"It's worth it," Sienna said simply, her gaze firm.
"They're my children. And Daniel, he's been so wonderful with them, especially with Leo. He's trying so hard with Zoe too."
As the lunch ended, and we stood to leave, I felt lighter, more centered. The nervousness was gone, replaced by a quiet sense of calm. Sienna wasn't a threat.
She was an ally, a kindred spirit in some ways, another strong woman navigating life's complexities.
"Thank you, Sienna," I said, genuinely, as we walked out. "This was really nice. More than nice, actually."
She smiled, a warmth radiating from her. "I thought so too, Maya. I truly did. Let's do it again soon.
Maybe next time, at my studio, and you can tell me all about your landscapes."
I felt a real, genuine smile spread across my face. "I'd like that very much."
Walking back with Daniel, the city seemed brighter, the air fresher. This lunch wasn't just a social event; it was a significant step in my recovery.
Meeting Sienna, seeing her warmth, her strength, her understanding, it broadened my own support system. It showed me that new connections, deep and meaningful ones, were possible.
It wasn't just Daniel I had now. It was a new kind of friendship, a glimmer of shared strength, and another beautiful layer being added to my healing world.
