Chapter 220 Let's Remarry

Chapter 220 Let's Remarry

Sloane's POV

In the cramped triangular space, the smell of blood grew stronger and stronger.

I clenched my teeth hard, tears silently falling onto the dust-covered ground.

Jared was still waiting for me in a hospital bed in New York, while Harrison, who had saved me, was trapped under this dark and sunless rubble, his fate unknown.

"Harrison, hang in there, please hang in there..." I gripped his ice-cold hand tightly, my voice choking.

Faint sounds of sirens and heavy machinery rumbling came from outside.

Rescue had arrived, but Harrison's breathing was getting weaker and weaker.

In the darkness, time passed unbearably slowly. Harrison's breathing grew lighter and lighter, so light it seemed it might dissolve into this deathly silent ruin at any moment.

"Harrison, don't sleep, talk to me..." I gripped his hand desperately, my tears drying and wetting again.

I don't know how much time passed, but just as I was about to lose all hope, a confused sound of footsteps and voices came from above.

It was German! The barking of search and rescue dogs followed.

"Someone's here! There's someone down here!" My spirits lifted immediately. I fumbled to grab a piece of rubble nearby and used all my strength to rhythmically strike the load-bearing wall beside me.

"Bang! Bang! Bang!"

"Quiet! There's movement down there!" A rescue team member shouted from above.

Soon, blinding bright light shone through the cracks. As the heavy machinery operated and rescue workers dug by hand, the stone slab pressing down on us was finally carefully moved aside.

Fresh air mixed with the scent of rain filled my lungs as a rescue worker pulled me out of the rubble.

The moment I saw daylight again, the searchlights outside were so bright I couldn't open my eyes.

I had barely steadied myself when a tall, upright figure entered my field of vision.

He wore a thin black shirt, his frame noticeably thinner, his face pale to the point of transparency, even his steps showing a hint of staggering.

But those deep black eyes burst with fervent light the instant they saw me.

My whole body shook. I could hardly believe my eyes. Wasn't he in the ICU in New York? Hadn't he blocked me and refused to see me?

Before I could react, he had already strode across the rubble-strewn ground and pulled me fiercely into his arms.

His strength was tremendous, his arms locked around my waist as if trying to embed me into his bones and blood.

"Sloane... my Sloane..." He buried his face deep in the crook of my neck, his voice hoarse beyond recognition, his whole body trembling violently. "I'm sorry, I came too late."

Feeling his heart beating wildly in his chest, all the grievances and fear I'd been holding in for days completely broke through.

I hugged him back, tears freely soaking his shirt.

"Didn't you not want to see me? Didn't you block me?" I choked out, my fists pounding his back without any real force, my voice full of accusation.

Jared's body stiffened, then he slowly released me.

He cupped my face, covered in dust and blood, his eyes full of regret and heartache.

"I'm sorry, turning you away last time was my fault." He looked at me deeply, his thumb gently wiping away my tears, his voice low and hoarse. "When I woke up, my mind was confused, my memory really had gaps. Aeneas threw a photo in my face of you throwing yourself into Harrison's arms at the bar, telling me you'd already taken the money and had a new lover..."

He gave a bitter laugh, a flash of self-mockery in his eyes. "I was crazy with jealousy, that's why I refused to see you. But Sloane, even though I forgot what happened in the past six months, even though I thought you'd betrayed me, the moment I heard about the explosion in Berlin, my body instinctively reacted. I couldn't control myself from coming to find you."

I froze.

So it was because of that photo.

Aeneas had actually used my drunken mistake to drive a wedge between us!

"That was a misunderstanding." I explained urgently. "I was drunk that day and mistook him for you..."

"I know, I had someone investigate it later." Jared interrupted me, his fingertips gently caressing the corner of my lips, his gaze burning and affectionate. "Sloane, no matter what I forgot, my love for you has long been carved into my instincts. I can't live without you."

Ignoring the eyes around us, he looked up at me, those eyes that usually looked down on everything now holding only humble pleading. "Sloane, let's remarry. Let me become your husband again, let me protect you properly and openly. I swear, there will never be any misunderstandings again, I'll never push you away again."

Looking at his pale face and affectionate eyes, the defenses in my heart completely crumbled.

"Okay." I nodded hard through my tears. "I agree."

Joy burst from Jared's eyes. He suddenly lowered his head and kissed me deeply.

On this rubble filled with blood and smoke, this kiss was passionate and desperate, carrying the relief of surviving a disaster.

"Cough..."

A weak cough interrupted us. I snapped back to reality and turned to look.

Harrison had already been lifted onto a stretcher by the rescue team.

The steel rod in his shoulder had been given emergency treatment, the white bandages stained red with blood over a large area.

He lay on the stretcher, his face deathly pale, his gentle eyes quietly watching Jared and me. There was no jealousy in that gaze, only acceptance and deep blessing.

"Sloane, congratulations to you both." Harrison weakly pulled at the corner of his mouth, his voice as light as a breeze. "Seeing you safe, I can rest easy."

My nose tingled, endless guilt and gratitude welling up in my heart.

If he hadn't protected me with his life, I couldn't possibly be standing here unharmed now.

"Harrison, thank you..." I stepped forward, choking out my thanks.

Harrison shook his head, signaling the rescue workers to carry him away.

He tried to adjust his position himself with difficulty, looking extremely strained.

Just then, Jared suddenly released the hand holding mine.

He turned around, looking at the group of fully armed black-clad bodyguards behind him, ordering in a deep voice, "Two of you go help Dr. Harrison to the medical tent carefully. Notify Berlin's best surgical specialists to arrange surgery for him immediately. All expenses go on Rex Corporation's account."

Two bodyguards immediately stepped forward, their movements efficient yet extremely careful as they took over the stretcher, steadily escorting Harrison toward the emergency area.

I looked at Jared in surprise.

This man who was always domineering, extremely possessive, who would get jealous even when Harrison spoke an extra sentence to me, was now showing unprecedented tolerance and magnanimity.

Jared seemed to see my shock.

He reached out to pull me back into his embrace, his chin resting lightly on top of my head. "Don't look at me like that, I'm not that petty." His low voice sounded by my ear. "He risked his life to protect my wife. This debt of gratitude, I, Jared, will remember for a lifetime."
