Chapter 212 Waiting for Your Triumphant Return

Chapter 212 Waiting for Your Triumphant Return

Sloane's POV

Jared's face instantly turned pale.

He looked at me, a flash of panic and hurt in his eyes. "Sloane, are you still avoiding me? We already..."

"I'm not avoiding you." I stood up, looking straight into his eyes with unprecedented seriousness. "Jared, I'm going away to improve my abilities."

He froze, his deep eyes showing confusion.

I took a deep breath and laid out what was in my heart. "The reason Aeneas dares to humiliate me again and again, scheme against me, and even threaten me with the orphanage I care about most is because in his eyes, I only know how to cling to the Rex family. He thinks I have nothing except you."

I paused, my gaze becoming firm and sharp. "I want to change how he sees me. I want to reach the top of the medical field and become someone no power would dare look down on. I want to stand beside you with dignity, so he'll have no reason or confidence to stand in our way anymore."

Jared's whole body shook, his pupils trembling violently.

He understood.

He understood the subtext in my words—my future plans included him.

I was willing to fight for my own confidence for the sake of our future.

"So you'll need to be patient for a while." I looked at him, a faint smile playing at my lips. "Six months will pass quickly."

Wild joy instantly flooded Jared's eyes.

He suddenly reached out and pulled me tightly into his embrace, with such force it felt like he wanted to merge me into his very bones.

"I'll wait." He buried his face in the crook of my neck, his voice trembling slightly with extreme emotion. "Even if it's a year, ten years, I'll wait."

He suddenly cupped my face and lowered his head to kiss me fiercely. This kiss was even more passionate than last night's, carrying the wild joy of something lost and found, and deep attachment.

On the night before I left, he was like a clingy large dog, staying by my side every moment.

The next morning, at the airport VIP lounge.

Jared carried my bag in one hand while his other hand gripped my fingers tightly, his eyes fixed on me without blinking, as if I would disappear if he looked away for even a second.

"When you get there, you must video call me every day." He instructed in a low voice, his tone full of reluctance. "If anything happens, contact my people there immediately."

Seeing him so tense, I couldn't help but find it amusing.

"Jared, you need to remember what I'm saying too." I squeezed his hand back, narrowing my eyes slightly with a hint of warning in my tone. "During these six months I'm not in New York, you better behave yourself. If I find out there are any troublesome women around you..."

"Absolutely not!" Jared immediately raised his hand to swear, his eyes as sincere as could be. "Besides you, not even a female mosquito can get near me."

He made me laugh, and a wave of indescribable sweetness washed over my heart.

"Attention passengers traveling to Berlin, your flight is now boarding..."

The announcement echoed through the lounge.

I took a deep breath and prepared to pull my hand away. "I should go."

But Jared suddenly tightened his grip. He pulled me into his arms and, in front of everyone in the lounge, lowered his head and kissed me deeply.

It wasn't until a flight attendant came over to gently remind us that he reluctantly let me go.

His deep black eyes were full of tender affection, his fingertips gently brushing the corner of my lips.

"Go, my queen." He murmured in a low, husky and gentle voice. "I'll be here, waiting for your triumphant return."

I looked at him and nodded firmly.

Then I turned around, straightened my back, and walked toward the boarding gate without looking back.

Berlin's late autumn carried a bone-chilling cold.

After finishing a full day of intense neurosurgery exchange meetings at Charité Hospital, I dragged my exhausted body back to the hotel.

I had just kicked off my heels and collapsed on the soft bed when my phone started vibrating.

Jared's name flashed on the screen. Calculating the time difference, it was early morning in New York.

I answered the video call, and the man's incredibly handsome face appeared on the screen.

He seemed to have just showered, wearing a loose dark gray bathrobe that exposed a large expanse of his firm chest. Water droplets slid down his sharp jawline and disappeared into his collarbone, radiating a naturally seductive appeal.

"Tired?" His voice was low and husky, and even through the screen, I could feel that magnetic quality.

"Yeah, three symposiums back to back. My brain can barely function anymore." I rubbed my temples. The nerves that had been tense all day finally completely relaxed the moment I heard his voice.

His eyes darkened, his fingertips gently caressing my image on the screen, his tone full of both concern and undisguised possessiveness. "I really want to fly over right now and bring you back. Sloane, six months is too long. Can we remarry? I want to visit my wife in Berlin openly, not like some secret lover who can only see you through a screen."

Seeing him look like he wanted to devour me whole, my heart softened and I couldn't help but smile slightly, though I maintained my rationality. "Stop it. Aeneas hasn't completely backed down yet, and those eyes within the Rex family are all watching us. If I back down now, all my previous efforts will be wasted. Jared, don't rush me. Just wait a bit longer."

He sighed helplessly, his deep eyes full of resentment but also indulgence. "Fine, I'll wait. But remember, you owe me a proper status. When you come back, I need to see you wearing my ring immediately."

Over the following days, we were like lovers in a passionate relationship, maintaining our connection across half the globe through calls and video chats.

He would send me good morning messages right when I woke up and remind me to eat on time before I went into the operating room.

This distance didn't dilute the bond between us; instead, it made that longing grow wildly in our hearts.

Falling asleep to his deep voice every day became my most peaceful moment in this foreign land.

Until a week later.

That day, Charité Hospital held an extremely important closed-door meeting to discuss a rare case of brainstem tumor removal.

The meeting lasted a full ten hours with all signals blocked. By the time I walked out of the conference room, night had fallen over Berlin, and cold rain was drizzling outside the windows.

I tiredly turned on my phone, and the screen immediately showed seven or eight missed calls, all from Jared.

My heart warmed, and I immediately called back.

The phone rang for a long time, but no one answered.

I frowned slightly. This wasn't like Jared at all.

Since I'd come to Berlin, no matter what important international meeting he was in, he would answer my calls within three seconds.

Maybe he's busy? I consoled myself and casually opened social media, planning to check the news from New York to pass the time while waiting for my ride.
