Chapter 236

Chapter 236

Even if it meant putting aside everything at the company and going to Emberlyn to relax, no matter how long it took, just to make Sophia smile.

For the next while, James had David buy plane tickets for the two of them. After taking care of company matters, he took Sophia straight to Emberlyn.

Meanwhile, Hayden was running around busy at the company.

Last night, because of the company situation, he barely slept at all. Early in the morning, he received a call from Veda.

"Why are you calling me so early in the morning?"

As soon as the call connected, he heard Veda crying on the other end.

"Dad, Mom was taken away by the police. Why haven't you come over yet?"

After Sophia and James left the hospital, Veda had been calling Hayden constantly, but he never answered. She finally got through once, but Hayden didn't give Veda any chance to speak.

Hayden sighed helplessly.

"Veda, your mom being taken by the police is what she deserves. I never imagined you two would do so many dirty things behind my back. No wonder Aiden was so ruthless with you two. If it were me, I might have taken both your lives."

Right now, Hayden could barely take care of himself. He never expected that Hazel and Veda had actually paid off the lead surgeon to harm Mia.

He had always known about the mother and daughter's little schemes, but as long as things weren't too extreme, Hayden would turn a blind eye.

But this time, he never imagined that Hazel would actually cause someone's death.

He had told them over and over that Sophia was now James's woman and not someone they could mess with, but Hazel just wouldn't listen.

Now look what happened. Hazel ended up in jail and couldn't even take care of her own daughter.

Veda started crying even harder.

"Dad, how can you say that? Even though Mom did wrong, she did it for me. I'm your biological daughter too. Have you ever done anything for me all these years?"

"Whenever something happens to me, the only one who helps me figure things out is Mom. You only care about your own stuff and never think about me."

Hearing the words "helps me figure things out," Hayden's temper flared even more. He was already swamped with company issues, but this mother and daughter pair just wouldn't stay out of trouble and kept causing him problems.

Hayden's patience had limits too. This time, he truly hardened his heart and didn't want to deal with anything anymore.

"Veda, your mother treats you so well and always helps you figure things out, and what's the result? Hasn't she just made things terrible for you? Do you think people who get involved in your life are always doing it for your own good?"

"Things have come to this point, and you've ended up where you are today. Look back and think carefully. If your mom hadn't been scheming in the middle all along, would you have ended up in this situation?"

"I'm telling you, Veda, your mom has been harming you. She's been harming you in the name of loving you."

After saying this, Hayden hung up directly.

Veda lay alone in her hospital bed, crying in complete despair. Now she had no one by her side. Only Hayden kept paying the hospital bills, and her wounds still hadn't fully healed.

During her time in the hospital, she had only been cared for by hospital nurses. Not a single person had come to visit her.

Without Hazel by her side, Veda became completely dejected. She couldn't live but didn't have the courage to die either.

Especially that Chase. He seemed to have vanished into thin air. Since she went to the Smith family and got beaten up by Aiden, Chase hadn't visited her in the hospital even once.

Veda had called him twice before, but both times he rejected the calls. Now, in her heartbroken despair, Veda gathered her courage again to call Chase.

Even though she knew Chase probably wouldn't date her anymore, there should at least be some closure.

The phone rang for a long time. Just when she thought Chase wouldn't answer, suddenly his voice came through.

"What's wrong with you, woman? I didn't answer your two previous calls. Don't you understand what that means?"

Before, Chase had been so accommodating to her, and no matter what temper she had, Chase would patiently comfort her. Now suddenly Chase was talking to her with this attitude and tone. Veda really couldn't accept it.

"Chase, what do you mean? As my boyfriend, I'm sick and in the hospital, and you won't even see me? I never thought you'd be such a heartless person."

Chase snorted coldly.

"Veda, how do you have the nerve to say that about me? What were you and your mom thinking, going to Uncle James's house to cause trouble? Now look what happened. You not only made Uncle James angry but also made my grandfather angry. You're putting me in a difficult position."

"Chase, how can you talk like that? I went to James's house just to comfort Sophia. Her adoptive mother died, and I knew she was sad, so I went to see her. Who knew your grandfather would be so hot-tempered and have those bodyguards beat me nearly to death for no reason? I didn't provoke anyone."

Even now, Veda was still making excuses for herself. Hearing this, Chase laughed out loud.

"Veda, save that story for someone else. I've been with you for so many years. Don't I know you? You, being kind enough to comfort Sophia? That's ridiculous. You and your mom went all that way just to mock Sophia and kick her when she's down, didn't you?"

Veda clenched her hands into tight fists. She never imagined that one day, Chase would mock her like this.

"Also, Veda, don't think I don't know what you're thinking. You always find ways to go to Uncle James's house. Dare you say you're not trying to seduce Uncle James?"

"And Veda, why didn't you tell me the truth after you left Uncle James's house and checked into the hospital?"

Veda frowned, not understanding what truth Chase was talking about.

"What didn't I tell you?"

Chase now had a gloating look on his face.
