Chapter 99

Chapter 99
“Who?” He’d dropped the flirty sexy tone. He was all cop now. Blue eyes boring into green ones. I swallowed.

“Fenton.” I whispered, looking down, refusing to look at him. He gently grasped my chin, lifting it so I was looking at him.

“Are you sure?” I ducked under his arm, he let me. He followed me back to my room where I threw myself onto my futon. VD opted to return to his seat on my bed. He raised his eyebrow at me. Still waiting for me to answer him.

I shook my head. Opened my mouth, but nothing came out. He patiently waited for me to find my voice. Finally, I was able to tell him my thoughts. The man’s build was right for Fenton. Plus, he didn’t seem like he was really trying to hurt me. If he had wanted to, he could have grabbed my arm instead of ducking away from me. There was also just something about him that was familiar. Maybe those lightning bolts missed me on purpose.

VD squinted at me. “How long as it been since you spoke to him?”

“Not since the day I ended our relationship. So, eight years ago.” I frowned. “Unless he’s messed with my memories and I just don’t remember.”

VD swore. “There’s no way to be sure.”

“What about Elle’s witch?” His eyes flicked away from mine. Suddenly my Boyz II Men poster was super interesting. Yeah, nothing suspicious about that behavior. Oh. I had just found a secret. Now I just need to figure out what it was. I cocked an eyebrow. “You know, the one that helped weaken the curse?”

“Oh yeah. That one.” He wiped a hand down his face. His eyes flitted to mine briefly before darting off again. “Sorry, I forgot about them.”

“Hmmm.” Yeah, sure you did. Oh, he was lying. Not well either. He would crumple in the interrogation room. I could go after him like he did me, but I was never good at intimidation. I’d just guilt Elle into telling me everything later.

“I’ll have someone look into his whereabouts.” He wouldn’t meet my gaze. Smiling devilishly, I got off the futon to stalk over to the door. I looked back at him on the bed.

“Are you really going to tell me you haven’t already looked into him?” I challenged him with a slight head shake. He stared back at me stone faced. “Hmmm.”

Opting for the main stairs this time, I turned to the left. I heard him follow behind me like the good little stalker that he was. He had yet to comment on him knowing where Fenton was. Thus, proving I was right. Anyone who watched crime shows knew the ex was always the first suspect after an assault.

As we turned on the landing over the arch to the formal dining room, another thought occurred to me. When did he start looking into Fenton? Was it possible he had never lost track of him?

They had been looking into him while I was still with him. It made sense they kept tabs on him after I left to make sure he stayed away from me. They might know exactly where the evil fiend was right now! Which would mean they would know if he had been the one to attack me. Oh! Was he trying to throw me off the scent? But why would they do that? Or was it just VD? I’d have to corner Elle later. She could be guilted. VD was too focused on protecting me.

In the foyer, VD’s phone dinged. I looked at him with curiosity as he read his text. He looked up with a smile. “Movers are half an hour out.”

I nodded. “I’ll go get a stall ready for them.”
