Chapter 98
Chapter 98
“No. Just trying to figure things out.” I sipped my coffee. VD watched me, skepticism plastered on his face. Not making eye contact, I got up to clean up the mess. He leaned back in his seat, drinking coffee while watching me from under hooded eyes.
“You know I’ve been interrogated before, right?” I asked with amusement. “That glare has no power here.”
Silently he kept up the attempt to intimidate me. I shook my head with a sigh. Needing a change of topic, I pointed at the ceiling over the table. “What are we going to do about that?”
We both looked up to see the giant discolored spot from the pipe I had ruptured a few days ago. Huh. Now that I thought about it, water was back on in the house. I frowned up at it. Then cut my eyes to him. He was looking way too smug.
“What did you do?” He laughed. “How did I take a shower yesterday?”
It was too early yesterday when I showered. I didn’t think about there shouldn’t be water. Huffing, I smacked him in the back of the head.
“Ow!” He cupped the back of his head. “No assaulting the law enforcement officers!”
“Then answer me!” Ugh! He was so frustrating.
“The pipe wasn’t busted. You just caused a surge in the water pressure.” He continued to rub his head. If he was trying to make me feel guilty, it wasn’t going to work. “After you calmed down, I turned the water back on.”
“Thanks for that.” I told him meekly. Good thing he had thought of that. I hadn’t given it another thought after I went to bed. Maybe I should be nicer to him, he was awfully useful.
“Some one has to look after you.” I didn’t like the implication that I couldn’t adult on my own. But I got myself cursed, so maybe I do need looking after. I just stuck my tongue out at him.
I went into the utility room to gather what was left of the clothes in the dryer. VD was on my heels. Propped against the door frame, he watched me throw the clothes in the hamper. Followed me up the servant stairs to my room. Nothing like having a man breathing down you neck in an enclosed space. In my room, he sat on my bed as I put away the laundry. Demon cat purring in his lap. The whole time, he was giving me the look. I rolled my eyes.
As I hung up the last of the clothes in the closet, I turned to find the doorway blocked by a big galoot. I stared up at him. He stared back. Oh, that was a serious look on his round face. Instinctively I took a step back. He stepped forward. Every step back I took, he took one forward. Slowly he walked me backwards. His eyes never leaving mine. I didn’t care for the look in them.
Quickly I found myself pressed up against the back of the closet. VD was standing inches in front of me. His body held in an aggressive stance. One of his hands beside my head on the wall. A shelving unit on the other side of me. I was trapped. Uh oh. I was in trouble. Licking my lips in apprehension, I met his blue eyes.
Ok, he was better at this than any other cop I’d come up against. But to be fair, I’d never been corned in my closet by one before. I wasn’t sure if I was about to be drug off to jail or kissed. It was oddly titillating. Ok, he wants to play? I can play.
I smiled up at him. Letting my green eyes light up as I looked at him from under my lashes. I put a hand on his chest. “Hmmm. What can I do for you officer?”
He leaned closer so his mouth was right by my ear. When he spoke, I swear I felt his lips graze my earlobe. His voice seemed deeper, huskier than normal. “Why were you asking about warlocks, Andretti?”
My brain fizzled for a moment. Turns out it was a good thing I had never been questioned by a hot cop before. I folded like a cheap lawn chair. My only comfort being that it had been a while since I had indulged in any male attention, so it’s completely understandable why I couldn’t withstand his charm. He wasn’t special. I wasn’t weak. It was just an unfortunate combination of events coming together.
I tried to resist. Really, I did. He hadn’t lifted his head. His breath was tickling my neck. My breasts were grazing his chest with every breath I took. I could feel the heat coming off his body. I swear I felt his nose in my hair at one point.
Oh god. Why couldn’t he just interrogate me like a normal cop? I couldn’t handle this. My body was reacting to his closeness. When had the high school nerd learned how to be sexually intimidating?
Proving he wasn’t oblivious to what he was doing to me, he chuckled by my ear. His voice still deep and husky. “Hmmm. Just tell me what I want to know, Kenna. You know I’m going to find out anyways.”
Closing my eyes, I let the words slip out. The ones that might come back to haunt me. “Remember the guy I tried to clothesline?”
I opened my eyes to see him nod out of the corner of my eye. Taking a breath, I told him the part that was bothering me. “I know someone who fits his build. I think I know who he is.”
