Chapter 95

Chapter 95

He shook his head confused. “No. Just Betty. Did you come across anyone else out there?”

His eyes flicked around, looking at all the shadows. Oops. I had sent him into paranoid cop mode. I didn’t feel it was a good idea to mention my hallucination, so I opted to just mention that I thought I heard a voice at one point. Shrugged it off as nothing of importance.

He swung around so he was standing in front of me. His gaze focused on my eyes. The blue of his eyes seemed to have a little bit of a glow to them as they twitched at me. Uh oh. Lying to an empath was bad. I see that now. Ok. Play it off. I can do this. I just smiled and changed the subject.

“How did you find me anyways?” I smiled pretty. Pushed the girls out. His eyes never left mine. He pursed his lips and narrowed his eyes. Oh, he knew what I was doing. Mental note, never date an empath.

“There’s an APB out for you.” He held the door open after I unlocked Betty. I looked at him in horror. Oh dear God!

“Tell me he didn’t!”  A smile twitched on his mouth. He leaned down to whisper in my ear.

“Lie to me, I lie to you.” He waved me in Betty. I sat down without protesting. What was I supposed to say to that. As I stared at him in horror, he took off the box piece I’d taped for a window. “Can’t have this blocking your view. Now, get on home. They are worried about you.”

I nodded meekly. With a charming smile, he closed Betty’s door. He turned to his cruiser. “No speeding, Red. I’d hate to have to pull you over and frisk you.”

He winked and got in his car. Patiently he waited for me to fire up Betty with her rumble and slowly back her out of the spot. He followed me to the highway. Went I went south he went north with a whoop of the siren.

Not trusting that he was really gone, I drove close to the speed limit all the way back to the manor. I didn’t come across any other cops. I guess he had radioed in that he found me.

Wait. He never said how he found me. Driving with my knee, I pulled my phone out. It was still off. Buggar. That wasn’t how he was tracking me. Now I had to go over Betty carefully. Also check my bag. Unless of course Trevor had actually been there and let them know where I was before he talked to me. Was it being paranoid to think my hallucination was in cahoots with my stalkers? Ugh. Can I please just go back to the old days where my biggest issue was finding good tacos?

As I pulled into the drive at the manor, I saw that all the work men were gone. A motion light came on over the barn. I could see little red lights under the eaves of both the barn and manor indicating LED cameras. Sighing, I got out to unlock the sliding barn doors. There was now a heavy-duty black hasp with a padlock hanging from it. I removed the open lock and slid the doors open.

I pulled Betty in carefully to park her on the X on the floor. When she crossed the threshold, a light came on. I flinched against the sudden bright light. What in Jake Day Hill had gone on here today? Shaking my head, I parked her and grabbed my backpack off the seat.

After checking to make sure the pad lock was mine, I put it on the hasp that had been installed on the inside. A part of me wanted to go through the secret tunnel to make sure I didn’t run into anyone. Instead, I put on my girl panties and went out the side door. After I locked it I turned around and about jumped out of my skin.
