Chapter 90

Chapter 90

From the porch I could see VD coming out of his door, in uniform this time. I stormed off the steps towards him. Elle at my side.

“Oh, I know he doesn’t think that uniform is going to protect him!” I snarled. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Elle shake her head. We stopped at the curb. Side by side, arms crossed, glaring at our new enemy. He thought we didn’t respect the law before, ha! That was nothing compared to what I was about to unleash on him.

His jaw tightened as he looked at us waiting to pounce on him. Trying to placate us, he held up a hand. “Now ladies, lets talk this out before you try to drown me.”

Elle and I looked at each other. We had an entire conversation without saying a word. VD watched our expressions changing and the subtle shrugging of the shoulders. Finally, I turned to him. “Let’s hear it, police boy.”

“First, that’s police MAN.” He corrected with a hard look. We scoffed. “Second, I’m not going to let anything happen to you, Kenna.”

He walked around us to go to the porch. Staring at his retreating backside in disbelief, we exchanged glances. Where was the fear? I leaned towards Elle. “Has he had a head injury lately?”

She shook her head. “Nah. It’s just his ego.”

I nodded. We both knew how fallible the male ego could be. Smiling viciously, we followed him through the front door. In the foyer, men were starting to pack up the tools and gather all the debris.

“Leon, what’s going on?” He sounded confused as he spoke to his buddy. Leon looked from him to us and back again.

“Um.” He cleared his throat. “The home owner has declined indoor cameras so, we are taking down the ones that were installed and will focus on the exterior ones. Excuse me.”

Not making eye contact, he picked up some tools to carry out. VD swung around to look at us.

“You need those cameras!” He sounded angry. Too bad. I shook my head. His anger doesn’t trump mine. I was the wronged party not him.

“Not inside.” I sighed. “Three hundred and sixty degree coverage outside, I’m all in. Cameras in the barn are fine too. But I will not risk someone spying on me inside.”

VD stepped towards me. Anger was sparkling in his eyes, so was something else. He actually raised his voice at me. “Kenna, this will keep you safe. Why won’t you let me protect you?”

“Because this isn’t protection!” I yelled back. My emotions were rising. “This is control! I will not be control by a man again!”

Tears were shimmering in my eyes. My face flushed as I felt the tears overflow. Fiercely swiping the tears off my cheeks, I turned to run to the porch. Opting for the back door, I hurried quickly around, passing workmen that looked at me in surprise.

Just before I went through the door, I heard Elle to VD to let her handle it. Not wanting to talk, I veered into the servant staircase. Not stopping when Elle called out my name, I kept climbing. Thankfully there was no one else on the stairwell. On the second floor, I turned down the hall to my room. Rushing through the door, I found a man in there. One I didn’t know.

He was up on a ladder in the corner over by the window that faces the barn. On the floor I could see some plaster dust. An electric drill was in his hand. He was wearing GWC security polo

“What are you doing in here?” I challenged him, I guess it was obvious, but I wanted to be sure. He stuttered before he managed to tell me that he was taking down the camera and the motion sensor they had installed in there.

“You installed a camera in my bedroom?” I roared in anger. Behind me I heard a sharp inhale of breath. Spinning, I found Elle standing in the hall. The man stuttered again. Teeth gritted I ordered him to get it down now and repair the damage done and get out of my house before I did unspeakable things to him personally! “Who puts a motion sensor in a bedroom?”

“They aren’t pointed at the bed, lady. Chill.” He didn’t stutter that time. All I could do was shriek. Faintly the sound of the sprinklers popping on reached our ears. I could also hear the water running in the bathroom down the hall. As I stared at this soon to be pushed out the window idiot, hail bounced off the roof. Downstairs I heard startled cries. Didn’t care. Everyone down there had wronged me in my opinion.

“You put an unauthorized camera in a woman’s bedroom. Unless you want to be arrested for voyeurism, GET IT DOWN!”

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Elle wave her hand. The hail stopped. Sprinklers shut off. As did the water in the bathroom.

Elle wisely stepped aside as I stormed back out to the hall. This time I charged down the stairs to the foyer. Where I found the soon to be dead VD and Leon quietly talking. “This house had better be camera free when I get back or I will destroy BOTH of you.”

I turned on my heel to run out the front door. I heard multiple people call my name behind me. I didn’t even bother to acknowledge they had spoken. Not stopping until I was climbing in Betty. She fired up with a throaty rumble. Guns and Roses blaring from her speakers. Her tires squealed as I backed down the drive. I left more rubber on the street as I took off for the highway. In the rearview I could see VD and Elle standing in the street, watching me drive away.
