Chapter 89

Chapter 89
Anger keeping my right foot heavy, I shaved almost half an hour off the drive time. I didn’t know it was VD’s work or not, but we didn’t pass a single cop. In a short amount of time, I was whipping Betty into the driveway in front of the maroon Victorian manor that was now our home.

The two pickups from Leon’s company were still parked out front. Men were up on ladders installing cameras under the eaves on the barn and the manor. I felt my blood sizzle. VD had violated my home.

The man in question was standing on the porch out of uniform, looking straight at us. Leaning against a column drinking coffee with his long legs stretched out in front of him, crossed at the ankles. I didn’t care how sexy he looked; he was about to lose part of his gluteus maximus.

I turned off Betty, her door creaked as I opened it. Elle climbed out on the other side. Together we stalked over to him. He smiled broadly as he watched us. The fool. He was about to get a smack down and he was smiling.

“Welcome back, ladies.” He was trying to be charming. Wasn’t going to work on me. Lazily he sat his coffee cup down on the table on the porch.

“How’d you do it?” I ignored his greeting. He smiled and stepped off the steps.

“How’d I do what, Andretti?” He asked seductively. His blue eyes focused on my face. Slowly he sauntered across the walk to where we had stopped. This was not the response I was prepared for.

Elle and I exchanged quick confused looks. He was trying to play us. Foolish boy. We shifted to widen our stance and crossed our arms. Elle let me take the lead. “You tracked us. How?”

“Did I?” His nonchalantness was getting on my nerves.

“Magically or humanly?” I demanded. He grinned but didn’t say a word. I nodded and pursed my lips. He wanted to play. Ok. Eyes locked, I raised both my hands. Raised my eyebrows.

“Wait.” He called out while reaching out to lower my hands. “The installers are innocent and have sensitive equipment.”

I nodded. “Elle.”

“On it.” Then without warning, just the sprinkler beside VD popped up. Drenching him. He shouted and tried to move away. The next sprinkler went off. Everywhere he went, the nearest one went off. Until he got close to the workers. Then a line of them went off. Keeping him pinned in but, the workers dry. Elle giggled.

“Oh my God.” I wiggled in excitement. “You have to teach me how to do that.”

“Girl, you taught me.” She told me with a head shake. We fist bumped.

“Hmmm. So, it’s in me somewhere.” I pointed a finger at the sky. “I will unlock it so I can smite those that have wronged me.”

I pointed that same finger at the target of our ire. “Unload my car you foul fiend! We need to pee.”

Arm in arm, we walked around the ladders on the porch to go in the front door. Inside we went split up to go to different bathrooms. I went for the one by the kitchen. We hadn’t needed to stop for gas on the way back but had drank energy drinks the whole way home.

We regrouped in the foyer where tools and spools of wires were strung everywhere. Men in booties were coming and going. I could hear a drill whirling from multiple directions. Elle and I stared at each other in shock. Leon started down the steps from the left. He paused at the landing in the middle.

“Oh, you’re back!” He said in way of greeting. “The Chief wasn’t sure how long you would be gone. Good call with going with the deluxe package.”

He came on down the stairs to stop in front of me. “We need to discuss where you want to put the control panel.”

“Control panel?” I questioned. He frowned at me like I was supposed to know what he was talking about. “Leon, I have no idea what is going on here. I didn’t authorize this nor agree to have anything installed.”

He looked at me in shock. Then cleared his throat. Shuffled his feet. Licked his lips. “Um. Are you sure about that?”

“I think I’d remember agreeing to have this level of security system installed, don’t you?” I asked with an arched eyebrow. “Besides, you never sent me the quote.”

“Um.” He cleared his throat again. “I sent it to the chief as he requested.”

Elle and I looked at each other. Flames should have been shooting out of our eye sockets. Good thing we were water sprites and not flame maidens or whatever they were called.

“Can we drown him?” I asked my faithful shenanigans partner.

“If we do it right, yep.” She nodded, tight lipped. We turned to Leon.

“So, what exactly have you done to MY house?’ I demanded. He might have been in contact with VD but, I hadn’t signed anything. He should have known better to install things without the homeowner’s permission. Looking uncomfortable, he picked up a clip board from the tool pile. Which he handed to me.

Looking it over, I saw it was a work order. It detailed the number of cameras, sensors, and monitoring. It also bore VD’s signature. I tapped it with my nail while looking at Elle.

“Yep. We are going to drown him.” I nodded, her response telling me she understood my anger.

I sighed. “Ok. This doesn’t look too bad. However, there will be no cameras inside. Only outside.”

“Um.” He stuttered.

“You’ve already installed some?” He nodded. “Get em down and repair ANY damage you did to MY house.”

He flinched at my tone. “Now Williams!”

Bowing his head, he scurried up the stairs. He was calling for everyone to stop what they were doing as he went.

“Where in the name of Jake Day Hill is that pesky cop?” I demanded as I stormed out the front door.
