Chapter 81 The Exchange
Pier 57 at sunset was deserted. An abandoned warehouse with rusted shipping containers, the Hudson River black and silent beyond.
Ariella and Aiden stood in the center of the pier, holding Victoria’s documents, No wire this time because Victoria would check. But Jessica Reeves had a drone overhead, streaming everything. The FBI was positioned three blocks away, waiting for a signal.
It wouldn’t be enough. They both knew it.
“She’s not going to let us leave alive,” Ariella whispered.
“I know.”
“Even if we give her everything…”
“I know.” Aiden squeezed her hand. “But we’re getting Elena back first. That’s all that matters.”
Headlights cut through the darkness. A black SUV rolled to a stop thirty feet away.
Victoria emerged, elegant as always and Behind her, were two men in tactical gear. One of them carried a infant car seat.
Elena.
Ariella started forward but Aiden held her back. “Not yet.”
“Let me see her!” Ariella shouted. “Let me see my daughter!”
Victoria nodded. The man tilted the car seat.
Elena. Asleep. Unharmed.
Ariella’s knees nearly buckled with relief.
“The documents,” Victoria said calmly.
Aiden held up the folder. “How do we do this?”
“Simple. You bring me the documents. I verify they’re complete. Then you get your daughter. We all walk away.”
“And the FBI? The broadcast? Your public confession to murder?”
Victoria smiled. “Already handled. My lawyers are claiming deepfake. Stress-induced delusion. By tomorrow, half the country will think it was AI-generated propaganda. The other half will be too confused to prosecute. I’ll be fine.”
“You’re insane.”
“I’m protected. There’s a difference.” She gestured. “The documents. Now. Or I have my associate put a bullet in the baby’s head and we all go home disappointed.”
The man holding Elena pulled a gun. Pressed it against the car seat.
“No!” Ariella screamed.
Aiden started walking forward, documents extended. “Here. Take them. Just don’t hurt her.”
He was twenty feet away when Victoria’s phone rang.
She answered it, and her face changed. “What do you mean, frozen?”
She looked at Aiden. “What did you do?”
“I don’t know what you’re…”
“My accounts, All of them. Frozen. My Assets confiscated. The Frost Industries board just voted me out. What the hell did you DO?”
Aiden smiled, a cold and vicious smile. “I gave the FBI something better than documents, I gave them financial access. Every shell company, Every hidden account, Every bribe and payoff and laundered dollar you’ve hidden for thirty years. Marcus wasn’t compromised, we just let you think he was. He’s been working with the FBI this whole time, building an airtight case. And about sixty seconds ago, they executed simultaneous warrants across seventeen jurisdictions.”
Victoria’s face went white. “You’re bluffing.”
“Am I? Check your phone. Check the news.”
She did. Her hand started shaking.
Breaking news: Frost Industries Executive Charged with Racketeering. Assets Frozen. Nationwide Manhunt for Accomplices.
“You destroyed me,” Victoria whispered.
“You murdered my mother, You tried to murder my family. I’d say we’re even.”
Victoria’s mask cracked, Rage replaced elegance. “Kill them… Kill them all. Starting with the baby.”
The man holding Elena raised his gun but dropped dead immediately, blood spraying from his shoulder. FBI snipers.
Chaos erupted. The second man returned fire and Victoria ran for the SUV. Aiden lunged for Elena’s car seat with Ariella right behind him.
More gunshots were fired, the second man went down too, Victoria was in the SUV already, engine roaring…
The vehicle exploded.
Not an explosion, just a controlled detonation. Enough to disable, but not to kill.
FBI agents swarmed from everywhere. Shouting commands. Victoria dragged from the burning vehicle, screaming obscenities, already in handcuffs.
Ariella reached Elena, unbuckled her and Pulled her daughter against her chest sobbing. Elena woke, startled, and started crying too.
“I’ve got you,” Ariella gasped. “Mama’s got you. You’re safe. You’re safe.”
Aiden wrapped around them both. His whole body was shaking.
An FBI agent approached. “Mr. and Mrs. Frost? Are you injured?”
“We’re fine,” Aiden managed. “Is she…is Victoria…”
“In custody. Along with her associates. We have teams executing warrants on fourteen additional suspects right now. Your information was…” The agent shook his head. “We’ve been trying to build a case against this network for eight years. You handed us everything we needed.”
“Marcus,” Ariella said. “Is he…”
“Special Agent Marcus Chen is debriefing the task force. He wants you to know his cover. Victoria never suspected he was working with us.”
Aiden laughed. Slightly hysterical. “He’s FBI? Our lawyer is FBI?”
“Was FBI, Recruited out of law school. He Went deep undercover in corporate law to investigate financial crimes. When he met you, he saw an opportunity to finally crack the Frost network. Everything he did, getting close to your father, helping with the case against Winters, advising you was part of the operation.”
“So he used us,” Ariella said numbly.
“He protected you, Kept you alive when there were multiple attempts on your lives that you never knew about. He’s the reason we got here in time tonight.” The agent’s expression softened. “He also wants you to know that his friendship was real. The cover was fake but The relationship wasn’t.”
Aiden nodded, unable to speak.
They were led to an ambulance and Checked over by paramedics. Elena was perfect, not a scratch, not a bruise. Whoever had taken her from the shelter had at least kept her safe.
“The woman at the shelter?” Ariella asked. “Is she…”
“Alive. Knocked unconscious but she’ll recover. We have the men who raided the shelter in custody.”
