Chapter 528 Selective Amnesia

Chapter 528 Selective Amnesia

Her heart was pounding. After a brief moment of silence, she asked hoarsely, "Do you not remember what you've done to me?"

Landen's face turned even paler. He stuttered, "I..."

He opened his mouth in disbelief but could not utter a word.

Yet, seeing how he acted, everyone knew that Landen had selectively lost some parts of his memory--the evil things he had done to Layla.

In Landen's mind, the only memories left of Layla and him were of the two in a loving relationship during the first year.

That was why when he was asked to apologize to Layla by Freya, he was confused.

"Let's go." Freya grabbed Declan's hand and tugged lightly. She mumbled, "We should go to bed."

Declan did not want to deal with Landen anymore.

He happily agreed to Freya's suggestion.

When they were in the bedroom, Freya looked up and frowned. She had a confused expression and asked, "Why do I have a bad feeling about this? Did Landen really lose his memory?"

She tilted her head and pondered. "Is it selective amnesia? Or is it just a coincidence?"

Declan bent his finger and tickled the tip of her nose. He said in a husky voice, "That has nothing to do with us."

He was completely uninterested in other people's matters. "Regardless..." Freya shrugged. "I still think Landen is faking it."

She concluded the topic at that. She stood on her tiptoes and held his chin. "Oh, this reminds me of you when you lost your memory. You were so fun to tease, blushing so easily. It was charming."

She then shook her head in disappointment. "Though, what a shame. You were such a pure, innocent young man. Look at you now--you're a completely different person."

Declan placed his hands around Freya's waist and pushed her onto the bed. He caged her in between his arms and stared down at her with eyes as sharp as an eagle.

Freya raised her hand and surrendered. "Don't be jealous."

She quickly comforted him, "It's still you. Just what on earth are you thinking?"

She could not help but tease, "Previously, when you lost your memories, you were jealous of your old self. Now that you got your memories back, you're jealous of the

you that had amnesia. Aren't they all you?"

Knowing Declan's extreme possessiveness, she was worried she would provoke him further. Hence, she wrapped her arms around his neck and uttered every word clearly, "I love every version of you. No matter what you become or how you behave, I love them all."

Declan was finally satisfied. The fire burning in his eyes slowly disappeared, and he smiled again.

"I can cosplay to fulfill your every wish. I will give you what you want."

He was like a tamed beast, licking at its owner's palm to please them.

Freya nibbled Declan's chin and said, "Can you stop seducing a pregnant woman? You're so unreasonable."

She patted Declan's shoulder and said, "Go to sleep." At the same time, downstairs. Landen was staring fixedly at Layla.

She ignored his fiery gaze and helped him up, saying plainly, "It's late. You should go rest."

Landen grabbed her hand instead, intertwining his fingers with hers.

At that moment, Landen was holding her hand tightly, and Layla couldn't recall when was the last time they had held hands.

...

The feeling of those intertwined fingers was very foreign.

Layla subconsciously resisted it and struggled to free herself. However, it didn't work. Not wanting to waste her energy, she allowed him to hold her hand as he wished.

Landen blinked and remained quiet.

His visibly tensed shoulders were finally relaxed.

He gulped and held Layla's hand tighter.

Layla walked ahead slowly and stopped at the guest room. It was then she retracted her hand.

Afterward, she pushed open the door and entered the room.

Seeing that, Landen attempted to follow after her but was stopped by Layla. "Your room is next door."

Landen showed a warm and innocent smile. "We're a married couple. Aren't we supposed to sleep in the same room?"

Layla suddenly laughed. She was typically aloof among other people. Yet, strangely, she exuded an alluring charm whenever she was alone with Landen.

There was almost an aura of innocence and allure surrounding her.

"My apologies, Landen, but we are not a couple," Layla said heartlessly. "You are having problems with your memories. That's why you can only remember those false memories of warmth. In reality, we are no different from enemies."

Landen froze on the spot, his eyes wide open. It seemed he had been dealt with a huge blow.

"I'm not lying." Layla leaned against the door frame. She glanced at him and said, "I helped you up earlier because you're quite an admirable person. Also, you helped my parents. As for why I let you hold my hand..." Layla sneered. "I merely wanted to test if I still had any feelings for you."

She continued, "You might not know this, but our relationship was great for only a year. The next six years were torture to me. I never once liked you in those six years. As for earlier..." Layla's smile widened. Her eyes were cold, filled with the need for vengeance as she said, "I just realized something. I no longer have any feelings for the Landen I was with during that first year, and that includes the current you."

Layla sniffled. "How wonderful. I've finally figured it out. I don't like you anymore."

As she ended her long speech, she had lowered her voice at the end. Yet, it was loud enough for Landen to hear what she said.

At that moment, Landen's face had truly lost all color.

The hands resting on his side clenched and unclenched, his chest heaving.

Layla did not spare him another look. She took a step back into her room and closed the door.

She stood unmoving, her gaze empty and unreadable.

On the other side of the door, Landen was still standing at the same spot.

An unknown amount of time later, he took out his phone and played the recording sent by Wilson.

Listening closely, he heard Layla saying she could not love him, yet she could not hate him.

That was what caused him to pretend he had amnesia and that he could only recall the memories of their first year together.

Landen finally knew he had messed up.

Layla had lost all feelings toward him, including the year that made her the happiest.

He laughed self-deprecatingly, so much so that his heart began to ache.

He had only just returned from jaws of death, and the torment he felt was never-ending.

Yet, he did not leave, continuing to stand outside of Layla's room.

Approximately two hours later, Layla's door finally opened.

She glared at the frail man before her and asked, "Who gave you the right?"

Landen raised his pale face and called out weakly, "Layla."
