Chapter 198 Dying Again
Chapter 198 Dying Again
~Rose's Point Of View~
My heart was thumping wildly. However, despite the rush of adrenaline, my head felt clearer than ever. After all, Caligo and I were just a night away from accomplishing our goals. We were in the process of rooting out all evil doers, and so, my brain was working overtime.
After Cassian handed Aurora over to one of Caligo's personal guards—I believe his name was Harold—he rushed back in to help in the battle against that man. As for me, I was tasked with getting Nyx, Nox and Catherine to safety. Yes, despite everything those two did to me, I still took it upon myself to help them.
Because even after everything, they were part of the pack I swore to protect.
“This way!” I called out as I hurried along the foyer. The rest followed me, and soon, we broke free into the open courtyard outside the manor. There, the entirety of the pack was gathered. Faces I was familiar with, those I had seen a few times, others whom I was just noticing for the first time.
Everyone was here. Caligo had ordered one of the Elders to gather everyone. Because he planned to expose his father in front of all of them. They would be the one to decide the man's punishment.
“W-what's all this?” Nox asked in a daze, her eyes still flickering with apprehension. The secrets that were revealed tonight must've done a number on her.
“All you have to do is wait here.” I said to her. “Nyx will be on standby, ready to inject anyone with the cure to the virus, should signs of it spreading appear.”
Nox looked at me in a daze.
“What? Cure? Virus…” She was mumbling.
Sighing inwardly, I turned to Nyx instead. “Please take care of them. Keep an eye on Aurora too. She mustn't be allowed to escape.”
Nyx nodded, then asked with a slight frown, “What about you? Where are you going?”
I glanced at the entrance of the house. Amidst the loud murmurs from the pack members, I said, “I have to go back and help them. Caligo might need my help.”
Nyx opened her mouth to speak— perhaps to say something like staying here was best. But eventually, she nodded.
“I understand. Love is a crazy thing.”
“Exactly.” I grinned, then rushed back into the house.
Power swelled through me, and I shot straight across the hallway. In a matter of moments, I pulled to a stop in front of the living room entrance. My eyes widened with shock when I saw what was happening inside.
Cassian’s unconscious body was laying in the middle of a shattered glass table. Blood was all over his figure, dripping along the shards that protruded from the furniture.
As for Caligo…
He was currently being held in the neck by his father. Life was slowly being choked out of him.
“Leave him alone!” I cried out, rushing forward on instinct. I jumped across the gap between us and landed right before the man. Using all the strength I had in me, I pushed out with both my hands. My palms struck the former Alpha's chest, sending him staggering backwards.
However, it had been enough to make him loosen his hold on Caligo. Caligo dropped to the floor, wheezing violently. His clothes were ripped in numerous places, hinting that he had assumed his full transformation at some point in time.
“Rose…” He coughed. “What are you doing here?! Leave, now!”
“No way!” I shook my head defiantly. “He's too strong. You won't be able to defeat him alone!”
“That's why you have to leave!” Caligo grabbed me by the hand, trying to pull me behind him, but I stood my ground.
Removing his hand, I said, “I'll be the one to protect you today. No matter what it takes!”
Caligo's father wore a look of surprise. He said as he calmly approached me, “That was strange… a mere human pushing me back that hard?”
Ah… he hadn't realized that I was a werewolf like them.
I snarled at him, saying, “Don't underestimate humans, you foul beast! You will meet your end here, I swear it.”
“How feisty.” He laughed heartily. “Looks like you got your hands on a fine woman, Caligo. Hm, perhaps killing her will fully awaken that monster in you.”
W-what?
A sense of dread washed over my body, clutching my heart and preventing him from moving, or even breathing.
Caligo's strained voice sounded behind me, “Don't you dare touch her! Don't you fucking dare!”
“Oh but I will…” Caligo's father said, and that was the last thing I saw.
Because in the next moment, without any knowledge of how it had happened, I found five claws stabbing straight through my chest. Right where I had been previously wounded.
“H-how…”
Blood seeped out like a broken fountain. I coughed, and more blood poured.
The only thing louder than the man's hysterical laughter was Caligo's yell.
“NOOO!!!”
“I'LL KILL YOU FOR THIS! I'LL KILL YOU, I SWEAR!”
Those were the words I heard before my body collapsed onto the cold floor of the living room. Ah, Goddess… Why was I always getting stabbed?
For the second time in my life, I experienced what death felt like. It wasn't pleasant. The pain was torturous. Excruciating, even.
However… it was only painful because I was alive to feel the pain. Because, unbeknownst to Caligo's father, I was a half-wolf, and I possessed healing capabilities just like the rest of them.
But, in order for this trap to be a success, I laid there on the floor, unmoving, watching with painful eyes as Caligo descended like the vessel of Wrath itself.
He clashed with his father once more, their huge frames thrashing around the living room.
I remained there, waiting for the perfect opportunity.
And when the opportunity finally arrived, I did not miss it. Caligo had traded blows with the man, sending both of them stumbling backwards. They charged at each other again, and just as it seemed like Caligo was losing, I suddenly sprang up from where I played pretense.
And then, I drove my claws straight into his nape from behind.
