Chapter 77

**Unspoken Fears**

My recuperation was followed by a flurry of activities. Repairing the damage from the last fight and becoming ready for any dangers, our pack was always on guard. I immersed myself in the task, hoping that the physical strain would numb the residual discomfort.

One night, when the sun had set and the woodland was tinted amber and scarlet, I was by myself beside the river that ran along the edge of our domain. Even though I had always found comfort in the soft sound of the water, it didn't help me to relax tonight.

Before I heard Kai's footsteps, I could feel his presence. His years as Alpha had given him a technique of moving without making noise. He took a seat next to me on the riverside, his body's warmth providing a soothing contrast to the evening's coolness.

We watched the river run for a time in friendly stillness. However, I could sense the strain emanating from him, a tangible burden pressing down on us both.

"Luna," he said in an uncharacteristically cautious tone, "I have something to say."

I looked at him, seeing the furrow on his forehead and the way his jaw clenched as if he were about to strike. "What is it, Kai?"

As though collecting his thoughts, he inhaled deeply and exhaled gently. "During the battle, when you unleashed that power... I was terrified."

I started to say something, but he stopped me with a hand gesture.

"Not of you," he explained at once. "But for you. I became aware of how near I was to losing you after seeing you use such tremendous strength and then fall.

His confession lingered between us, laden with unsaid anxieties. I put a hand over his and reached out. "Kai, I—"

Gently, "Let me finish," he interrupted. "I've always taken pleasure in my strength and ability to defend the people I love. But I felt completely powerless at that time. The idea of a world devoid of you is intolerable.

My throat constricted with emotion, leaving me unable to speak. I hadn't thought about how it might affect those around me, particularly Kai, since I had been so preoccupied with my own anxieties and uncertainties.

He looked directly into my eyes as he turned to face me. "Luna, I don't want to lose you. nor to your inner strength, nor to the threats we confront. To prevent it from consuming you, we must comprehend and manage it."

With tears stinging in the corners of my eyes, I nodded. "Kai, I also don't want to lose who I am. I don't want to lose you, either."

As though securing us both, he drew me into his arms and held me there. My tense nerves were calmed by the steady beat of his heart against my ear.

He whispered, "We'll face this together," into my hair. "Whatever comes, we'll face it as one."

I felt a feeling of resolution come over me as we hugged each other beside the riverbed. In this fight, I wasn't alone myself. Having Kai at my side gave me a newfound resolve to control my inner strength and make sure it turned into a force for good rather than harm.

However, the peace of the night was broken by a howl in the distance as the moon rose high over the trees, illuminating us with its silvery light. It was a distress cry, and I became tense as it reverberated through the forest with such intensity.

Kai tensed up, his hold on me becoming tighter for a second before he withdrew, his face changing from one of affection to awareness. He responded, "That's from the northern perimeter," in a worried tone.

I got up, forgetting my previous exhaustion. "We need to go."

We ran into the forest together, the underbrush rushing by us in a blur. This time, the howl was closer and was accompanied by a distinct sense of panic.

One of our scouts, a young wolf called Eamon, was panting rapidly and had wide, panicked eyes as we rushed into a clearing.

"Alpha, Luna," he said, "intruders... in the northern woods... they're unlike any we've seen."

Kai's gaze became strained. "How many?"

Eamon said, "At least a dozen," in a shaky voice. "They move with power and speed that are not natural. I barely made it out alive.

A shiver went through my body. It seemed too fortuitous that this new danger appeared so soon after our most recent conflict. And how these invaders are described...

Kai looked up at me with a somber face. "We need to gather the pack and prepare for whatever this is."

I gave a nod, but something kept pulling at the back of my mind. I still remembered the competitor Alpha's last remarks: * "The power you unleashed—it's only the beginning." Like it has consumed those before you, it will eat you as well. *

I couldn't help but believe that this new danger was somehow tied to the power inside of me as we rushed back to the center of our area, assembling our warriors and bolstering our defenses. And the panic of losing myself to its depths clashed with the anxiety that conquering it could be the only way to keep people I cared about safe.

While making prepa

rations, Kai drew me to the side and looked into my eyes.
