Chapter 429 Chill Out, Hendrix!
Although Everly wasn't a gamer, she knew that must be devastating. Thinking about the call from Lawrence this morning, Everly felt some sympathy for him.
"I might be able to get the code back. Do you need my help?" Sofia said.
Beth had an acute sense. Her gaze fell on the attractive woman, who was wearing black-rimmed glasses, and found her eyes so cold that they reminded Beth of cold-blooded animals.
Why did a painter know how to program?
Sofia knew too much as a painter, didn't she?
Beth was sizing her up quietly. She had intended to refuse but changed her mind at the last minute. "That's great. I've been so worried recently. I have been coding for my client. But the product manager raised some unreasonable requests. I pulled several all-nighters. But my boyfriend ruined everything."
Everly, who was in the passenger's seat, glanced at Beth through the rear-view mirror and knew Beth was lying.
But as they were still friends, Everly didn't expose her lie.
Sofia was just a stranger to Beth. It made perfect sense for Beth to not tell her the truth.
During lunch, Beth took out her laptop and asked Sofia to recover her data.
When Sofia was working on it, Beth sat next to her with the pretext of learning. Maybe Lawrence would cause trouble again. So, she might as well learn how to retrieve it.
It took some time, but Sofia managed to get the data back.
Beth was filled with joy. "Thank you so much. If it weren't for you, I would have to work on it for countless nights. Sofia, you are amazing. You are not only good at painting but also an expert in computer science."
"I don't know much about it. I have broad interests, so I dabble in a lot of things." Sophia was being polite. She had heard too many praises.
But Beth still thought highly of her.
The pleasant tour came to an end.
Before they left for home, Everly invited Sofia home for dinner the next day.
"Thank you very much. But I don't want to cause any trouble to your family." Sofia was embarrassed.
"It doesn't matter. My boyfriend is very nice." In Everly's eyes, Maverick was a particularly good man. Perhaps, it was because love was blind.
In the end, Sophia agreed as Everly insisted.
"Everly, how did you know her?" Beth asked, sitting in the passenger seat. She narrowed her eyes and stared at Sofia's back through the rearview mirror as Sofia left.
Everly told her the truth.
"What a coincidence," Beth said.
Everly found the U-turn in Beth's attitude strange. Beth seemed to like Sophia a lot just now, but why did her attitude change all of a sudden?
"Nothing."
Nothing?
"Can I come for dinner tomorrow? Will you show some sympathy to me?" Beth said pitifully.
"Don't act vulnerable. You can stay with me tonight."
"I won't. Maverick would kill me if I stayed with you."
Everly was surprised to find everyone was afraid of Maverick.
"He's not that intimidating. He is just a bit reserved, but he's easy to get along with."
"That's because you are his girlfriend who doesn't go against him. You will know how scary Maverick is when you disobey him and make a fuss." Beth didn't believe a word of Everly.
Everly remembered that Maverick had a relapse when she tried to leave him. But even if Maverick fainted in anger, he did not do anything to her when he woke up. Everly felt that Beth had a prejudice against him!
Plus, Everly wouldn't make a fuss, would she?
"Maverick is always so nice to me," Everly thought happily.
In the end, Beth went to a hotel. But to hide her identity, she borrowed Everly's ID.
"You're my bestie. I'll be honest with you. You're not married yet, so you and Lawrence are not family. Don't be partial and tell him where I am right now. I've ruined his game account and I'm still mad at him. I believe he is still pissed off as well. But I'm not making a fuss over a small thing. It's just that he has no respect for me. I have my own life. I'm not his subordinate, waiting to serve him all the time. Should I stop working when he is off? I haven't complained about it to him. But this doesn't necessarily mean I don't care. I can't change him, so I respect him. But respect should be a two-way street."
Everly listened to her in silence. After a while, she said softly, "Come to dinner tomorrow."
Sometimes, Everly found being a woman pathetic. When women fell in love with men, they had to change their habits at the expense of their happiness. But there was no other choice because leaving the relationship would mean more pain.
For example, Everly didn't like many aspects of Maverick. But she had no choice and could only learn to adapt.
She was fine with it as long as Maverick didn't cross her bottom line.
After driving Beth to the hotel, Everly left. Just when she got out of the parking lot, something hit her car. The impact force caused her to fall forward. But the seatbelt pulled her back. Everly's back hit the chair.
Before Everly could get out of the car, someone knocked on her car window. "Get out!"
Everly frowned as she felt that the man was very rude. She opened the door and got out, unfazed by the man because she was in a public place.
"This is your fault. How much are you going to pay?" the man cut to the chase.
Such an unreasonable man! She was the one whose car was crashed into.
"Call the traffic police. Let's see what they will say about it." Everly took out her phone. Just as she was about to call the police, her phone was snatched by the man.
Not expecting him to be so bold, Everly leaned against the car door. "Why? Are you afraid?"
"You don't want to compensate me, do you? Alright then. Let's go to the police station."
Everly thought, 'What?'
'He refused to call the traffic police but wants to go to the police station?'
Everly turned him down in vigilance. But the man reacted so quickly that Everly was grabbed by her wrist. The man opened his car door, trying to take her away.
The consequences would be disastrous if that happened!
Everly was too weak to fight against the man. She was almost in the car when she heard a scream and felt the grip loosen.
A tall and slender woman knocked the man down in a split second.
"Miss Everly, call the police."
Everly reached out to grab her phone, her hands shaking.
However, the call was already on. Perhaps during the fight just now, she had accidentally dialed Hendrix's number.
"Everly!"
"Brother. I'm fine," Everly said weakly as she hadn't recovered from the shock.
"Where are you now? I'll be right there."
Hendrix was determined and decisive.
Everly looked around. Coincidentally, the place was not far from Hendrix's company and she needed someone whom she knew well for support. The more she thought about the incident, the more terrified she got.
In less than ten minutes, Hendrix arrived, even faster than the police.
Everly sat on the side of the road. She was fine except that her face was a bit pale.
"Where is the man?"
Hendrix asked about the man who tried to drag Everly in his car.
"There." Everly pointed in a direction, refusing to look at the man.
Hendrix walked over with a fierce look, lifted his foot, and kicked hard. When he was about to kick again, someone stopped him.
"Hendrix, chill out."
